The song you're playing on guitar

This one's for the Shaggy guitarists, whether aspiring or acclaimed. We all have the sickness. You hear a song, you decide "I must learn to play that." The next few hours, days, weeks, or months are dedicated to nothing but perfecting every last note.

Your health suffers. Your career takes a step backward. Your wife starts an affair with a Costa Rican yoga instructor. Your daughter has to find a substitute "father" to walk her down the aisle. None of this matters, because you finally have that one tricky bridge riff down pat and can start working your way through the solo.

My current obsession is Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Breaking the Girl." Before that, it was a string of metal songs (Ozzy's "Bark at the Moon," Megadeth's "Tornado of Souls," and a few others).

So, what tune is your current siren song, drawing you helplessly to the guitar every day?

interesting thread.. I've always been a drummer but at one point tried picking up the guitar to learn. My short nubby fingers quickly killed that. However I did learn one song. About a Girl by Nirvana. It is about the only thing I could make work with my meat hooks.

Pink Floyd - Lost for Words - Nice song, and easy to learn on acoustic.

Pink Floyd - Coming Back to Life - love this song, but the outro solo is a bitch.

ZZ Top - Rough Boy - like the song, and it should be easy, but I just can't get it.

Especially that last solo with the pinky picking or whatever the hell you call it, I'm not coordinated enough.

Ambitious. That's one I need to learn some day.

The song that's been the bane of my existence for over a year is Doc Watson's "Little Sadie." I can play the song well enough that the average listener thinks it's pretty damned good. But I'll never play it half as well as Doc.

I've always wanted to learn to play like Mississippi John Hurt. I love that style.

There is a good scene of John playing this in their mansion/studio in the Funky Monks doc. The Beatles chords on the "twisting and turning you're feeling the burn" section are great, and he plays the $#@! out of them.

"Beatles chords?" Never heard that term. The way I play it is:

    E x x x x
    B x x x x
    G 5 7 9 12
    D 5 6 7 9
    A x x x x
    E 5 7 8 10

    Is that what you meant?

Thanks for this. I had never heard of John Hurt before, but now I'm going to make it a project to learn a couple of his songs. There don't appear to be many tabs out there, but Ultimate Guitar has a good one for "Nobody's Business." And, with that, my wife and Rolando the yoga instructor just earned another 20 hours of free time.

Cool topic. Currently - Have A Drink On Me. Decided to work through all of Back in Black the other day. HADOM came up first on the ipod for some reason.

Lately I've been trying see how close I can get to the Albert King way of doing business. Stringing up the guitar so the high e is on top, mid position of out of phase humbuckers, phase 90, all of it.

But I'm missing the badassness the Abert had to make it all work unfortunatly.

Other than that, my go-to jam is turning down to D and jamming to Voodoo Chile Blues (The non-wah slow version). The simplicity of that song makes it much harder cop the groove/feel.

Only a beginner but learning four songs at the moment:

    Smells Like Teen Spirit
    Crazy Train
    Iron Man
    Smoke on the Water

(Because power chords are so much easier than open chords)

  • #19
I'm not good enough to play other people's stuff. I just write my own. Can't really play them all that well, either . . . wish I could.

Yeah, that's how he's playing it. I think he's on a twelve string. Those are chord shapes that were used by The Beatles but which are irregular in popular rock music. At least that's how I remember learning them a long time ago.

Love the tone of that recording. Anyone ever tried playing one of those fanned fret guitars? I've never really experimented with alternate tunings but would love to play one of them..just once.

Mike Greenfield is one of the best known builders. Love listening to him talk about guitars.

Here is another one of Andy McKee 'playing' around. Wow.

McKee is amazing. There's as much going on with the right hand as with the left. I'm having a harder time with the right hand stuff.

Playing the role of bachelor for most of the weekend. I could spend the entire time squandering the family fortune on some tramp at Sugar's. Instead, I'm planning to put the finishing touches on a couple of songs that I've been partially playing for a while: Megadeth's Go to Hell and Van Halen's Hot for Teacher.

  • #34
I've been trying to get the intro to Hot for Teacher right since it came out. Still working on it. Good luck to you sir.

Bump. What are y'all working on at the moment?

Last night was Monday. That's Bachelorette night. So, I sat next to my wife for two hours and pretended to watch some crazy broad select her soulmate from among 30 douchebags willing to take several months off of work to compete on a game show, while actually dedicating my full attention to the solo from Dinosaur Jr.'s "Feel the Pain." Thank God for the Vox AmPlug.

Kudos if you can pull off the combo guitar/harmonica play. I've never been able to play harmonica and guitar at the same time, most likely because I can't play the harmonica.

Figured out Jimmy Eat World's the Middle solo. Might try to take on the Hotel California solo again soon, but have really been wanting to learn the whole Kickstart my Heart. We'll see how pissed off I get at that one first I think.

Get a harmonica and keep it close and just mess around with it for a month or so. Once you can play single notes (play old susanna like James Taylor used to sing it), get a couple of extra harmonicas in the keys you tend to play your guitar in, and play the harmonica along with the songs you like. Once you do that you are set.

Seems like I can play along to most songs I listen to on G and A and D and Bb. Don't understand music and don't know why. I don't think I am playing second position.

    And ain't that not some mother$#@! $#@!ing $#@!. It's a popular song. Yes.

But holy Christ is it $#@!ing good.

To the thread, like whoever...ever. Spit the wisdom above. I can play a lot of $#@!. But these days, I'm retired. I'm just pumping out my own $#@!.

It seems to be working. Though I am inspired all the time by some "new" $#@! i have heard a thousand times.

I think hulla made a reference to Knopfler above. Dude inspires me. Always.

he ain't the best, ever. But the $#@! is pretty damn good.

Been watching some The Wire episodes, working through this song by Steve Earle now - I Feel Alright

*edit* some spoilerish $#@! if you are wrong and haven't watched season 2 of the wire yet, just google the song for another vid*

Seems like a pretty good tab, though I think there is some chord work going on not covered in it (on the C in the choruses)
I $#@!ing love this song, love the feel, love what Steve does rhythmically (and lyrically) with his vocals.
