I'm definitely a big fan of Brown's. I wish we had more options like that on the north side.

Valentina's moved closer to me and it has been amazing every single time I've gone. For those in South Austin, definitely worth going. So tempting to go like once a week now that it's less than a mile from me.

If Valentina's was less than a mile from me, I would go at least once a week.

Have you guys tried Big Cat in Cedar Park yet? Curious where those that have tried them all would rank it.

LeRoy and Lewis is pretty damn good. not a "typical" joint but nothing is wrong with that...it's good stuff and they have their grand opening (B&M?) fairly soon IIRC

I'm going to try and hit up Brown's for the first time Thursday for lunch. If you order by the pound, do they provide bread? I couldn't tell online.

I will most likely get moist brisket, pork ribs and sausage. My go-to for my first visit someplace.

Brown's is good, not great. At least today, my first visit.

I tried fatty brisket, sausage, pork ribs, mac n cheese, and cabbage.

The ribs were very meaty, fall off the bone. I noticed the sweet flavor people have mentioned. I'm not a huge fan of the sweetness, but I enjoyed the ribs overall.

The sausage was ok. Nowhere near Kreuz good, which is my standard.

Brisket was good, but not really memorable. Very tender, which was its best attribute. Not quite salty or peppery enough for my taste. I'm not sure what wood he's using, but I got a hint of a flavor I've noticed other places. Almost chemical-like. Probably just white smoke or something.

Mac was ok. Cabbage was meh. Both sauces were run of the mill.

Overall, I give it a B+. Would try again.

Stiles Switch is pretty dire. I don't get the love at all. I'd rather have Rudy's.

Valentina's is just awesome, too bad it's so far out of the way now.

Big Cat was ok. Not great. I had fatty brisket and turkey.

The brisket was tender but missing flavor. The turkey had flavor but a little dry.

Green beans were good and mac n cheese was better than good.

I'd go again but not go out of my way to go again.

Thanks for the report. I'll give it a try, just because it's pretty close, but I'll keep my expectations down.

You guys clearly have more diverse experience, so I hesitate to grade BBQ, but I always enjoy their beef rib. It's not Coopers (best I've had) but it's still damn good. The reason I ask is that I'm interested in how it stacks up for guys that have tried so many.

I too was underwhelmed with Oakwood yesterday. Ordered the fatty brisket but half of it was dry flat. Not enough seasoning or smoke. Count my vote as "Rudy's is better".

Went to Big Cat yesterday for lunch.
They had a handwritten sign saying they were out of jalapeno sausage, pork ribs and turkey.
    Ordered brisket.
Later found out the sign was from the day before and they forgot to take it down.

Brisket was good. Not a top tier brisket but good enough. Sides were decent but nothing special.

They use Creekstone Farms meat, so it's Halal. Two co-workers tried their first ever BBQ and were happy.

went to oakwood today and was pretty impressed. it's not lockhart q, or franklin, or micklewaite, but it brisket and ribs were as good as stiles and freedmen's. ribs fell off the bone with one bite, brisket had a nice, smoky, salty bark.

    big cat is next.

I hit up southside market in Elgin (I know, it's not Austin BBQ but ACC has a campus a mile down the road so its Austin now) for the first time in a year or so. I really like what they bring to the table. Pork ribs > Sausage > Turkey = Brisket. I went with my wife and kids so the other features of the place made this visit possible and a reason I will go back more often. There was almost no line and plenty of room for us to enjoy in peace. The bonus was a perfectly sized small scoop of chocolate blue bell for each of the kids.

one sunday, coming back from washington-on-the-brazos, i stopped at southside and meyers and ordered the exact same plate. both were excellent.

    Valentinas today:

The pulled pork sandwich was flat awful. Dry as $#@!, impossible to eat. The taco was $#@!ing heaven - pulled pork, chopped brisket, onions, cilantro, red and green salsa.

Just tried it today, basically the same opinion. Brisket was tender but a little dry, had really light smoke, I would have preferred more, and really light salt and pepper in the bark, again I would have preferred more.

Pork rib was also just too light in smoke, had a little more pepper though, but was also slightly chewy.

The pulled pork was probably the best thing they served me, it was slightly sweet in the Carolina style, more smoke than either the brisket or the rib, and more flavor in the bark as well. But pulled pork isn't going to sell me on a BBQ place in Texas.

Like GottaB, I'd go again, but wouldn't go out of my way to go again. Too bad too, would love better options in NW Austin/CP.

Anyone heard anything about Birdhouse BBQ? A random Yelp ad on my facebook feed mentioned it, I haven't even heard of it.

I really wanted to like Oakwood BBQ. The workers/owners are cool and the building is nice. After 4 trips I've decided the brisket isn't good enough for me to come back.

Took the family to Rudy's last night for Father's Day, because as you know, the best Father's Day gift is "hey Dad let's go spend your money".

I have to say, it was terrific. Easily the best I've ever had there. The brisket was tender and very well seasoned, and believe it or not, the St. Louis ribs (never a strength at Rudy's) were quite delicious. Honestly, the meats were as good as I've had at Stiles Switch or Terry Blacks, and some of that moist brisket approached what I've had at JMMC and Franklin. Not quite there, but . . . Rudy's.

Got out of there for $74 which is nothing to complain about, given the fact we had 4 adults and 3 teenagers.

Still a fan. Extremely competent BBQ within a short drive of just about anybody in Austin. Priced well, and they have tons of seating (although the line was out the door).
