I think the signups will be much higher than in Kansas city. Especially near the center of town.

  • #103
OMG! Anyone who doesn't jump on that is straight up regarded. I need to invest in a couple hundred miles of cable to get in on that.

No HBO/No AMC is a deal killer with me - that's about 50% of what I watch and 95% of what I care about.

How did they do the Kansas City rollout? How comprehensive was it, and how long did it take? I'm going to be up in the Anderson Mill area, which, while still well within the urban area, isn't exactly the center of town.

If you live in a neighborhood where everything is run under ground, extra conduit may have been put in for future expansion since doing so after the fact is a pain in the ass. The scope on these projects is hard to imagine. I've had two different fiber runs done at work and it's a pain. One of them involved going over a railroad track which was the opposite of fun. We leased some existing fiber to get over a major state highway. I was told at the time that the waiting period to get approved by TxDot to do that was over a year.

Can google co-exist with another provider in your home? I don't see why not, if I was in Austin I would just keep my cable with some other provider of choice and go Internet with Google.

For those that haven't seen it, the announcement video from KC explains a lot.

TL;DW - they break the city into "fiberhoods" and when a fiberhood reaches a minimum goal, they deploy there. If I remember right, they keep up a scoreboard so people can track how their fiberhood is doing. There was a 6 week rally period where they did a bunch of pre-registrations and that determined the first fiberhoods to get deployment.

Deployment strategy is at 45:30 on that video.

What pissed me off about all the providers now is that this proves that their service is effectively all profit for them. It's crap.

That's silly. You can find the content w/o those channels, and with the fat pipe you will have, getting it won't be an issue.

    It's still going on.

These kind of give an idea

    http://googlefiberblog.blogspot.com/...-missouri.html

This shows you geography - not every neighborhood qualifies (scroll down)

    https://fiber.google.com/cities/kck/#header=check

As for Anderson Mill, hard to say, but if enough people in your area sign up, it's possible, since not all of the areas in KC that have it or are geting it are linked together. I think it's almost a given that the areas between Mopac and 35 will be covered, given the density and how many tech companies and employees there are up and down that corridor.

No reason why it shouldn't work that way. Maybe more expensive, but you'll get the channels you want.

Google has added a $#@!load of channels since last summer, if you look through their blog. At one point they didn't have ESPN.

This, and this. I can't function without the sports package, and the wife would demand HBO. I'd keep TWC for cable (or perhaps use this as the catalyst to move to AT&T to pick up the LHN), and whenever GoogleTV got what I needed, it's hasta la vista, cable $#@!ers.

I bet you'll get it though.

One of my friends is already planning on building a nice little game server to serve up a few of the games he likes. It's weird to think we're close to a point where we have more bandwidth than we know what to do with.

Most people do not realize how ass-$#@!ed we are getting over the current offerings. Google benefits from TV advertising as well as Android app sales.
Any tech support calls are just going to drive down that profit.

That's only in neighborhoods with aerial power. Any modern neighborhood is going to be buried, which means Google coming in and trenching up every yard to get their service delivered.

The true answer (I think) is to have a municipality control the layer 1 and lease to providers so you could pick and choose what provider you want. That way when the next, Grande/Google/etc. wants to come to town they aren't trenching up everyones yard but every house has fiber(s) running to it already.

You may get the fiber and a trenched up yard. Its easy to be an overbuilder in an aerial neighborhood but the residents tend to hate having their yards torn up in existing, underground neighborhoods.

One article said Google needed 20% of a neighborhood to be profitable on the internet side, or slightly smaller percentage to have both internet and TV services.

I could easily see them hitting that in quite a few areas in Austin. I know people that are happy with Time Warner and AT&T, but I know more people who aren't for one reason or another (speeds, price, etc.). Wonder if TW will still claim that people don't need Gigabit or that they can offer higher speeds but that consumers haven't demanded it.

Friend got cold-called this morning by TWC about adding additional services for a discount. Probably a coincidence since TWC probably doesn't move that fast. He was in a hurry and couldn't really talk to them and try and get more information, but he did tell them as soon as Google Fiber was available he was dropping them.

fwiw: i called att uverse to cancel since "google is coming to town" and they gave me 50% off my inter+tv tubes for 12 months.

Damn. That's good. Are you under contract for 12 more months?

  • #135
no contract with uverse. it's just a discount that lasts 12 months. oh, and technically the discount is more like 42% but the maths were fuzzy after lunch.

That's probably more a consideration of the buildout cost than the operations cost like tech support.

  • #137
If you know how to work the black magic we call the internet, there's no reason why you would actually miss AMC or HBO with Google Fiber.

From a few articles I've found, and some interviews, tech support will probably be their big cost, because it seems like every single bit of the installation was done by contractors. Lot of irony, because those contractors work for AT&T and TWC as well.

They save money by making their own hardware for in the homes, and it probably cuts down on tech support since they probably build in comprehensive diagnostics for their techs to use.

Although not sure why they use 2TB drives, unless they are getting them for an incredibly cheap price, or it's future proofing. 500 hours of HD is a little crazy.

AT&T U-verse ads are running at the top of this page, at least for me.

You sure about that? I thought I wasn't under contract with Uverse, and then I discovered about 1/2 way through I was. Those $#@!ers use some $#@!ed up language to trap you in.

In theory, they should be able to share tech support with the KC bunch since the hardware will be the same, and will still rely on contractors for house calls. I'm thinking that might help lower some costs, economies of scale and all.

Gigabit U or Gig.U or whatever the university gigabit initiative is, accidentally posted an early congratulations letter, confirming this even more. Makes me think they'll definitely target the UT area, which makes sense - branding and all.

btw, KXAN is carrying the press conference tomorrow at 11am.

IMHO, Tech support is probably a wash for Google. Google already has a tech support branch for most of their services, this is just 1 more thing for everyone to be knowledgeable about - Gmail, Google Drive, Google Fiber, etc.

Probably not getting googlez up here in Round Rock. Maybe it was only a coincidence then that AT&T was cutting up the street between my house and the node thus disrupting my service.......dramaticchipmunk.jpeg

I had someone from AT&T knock on my door this weekend touting 25 megabits and asking me to switch from TWC. I told her that I was waiting on Google Fiber. This was news to her, and she asked if it was going to be 100 megabits. I told her, no, a gigabit. Her jawed dropped, and I politely shut the door.

If you do a news search on Google Fiber Austin right now, there are tons of stories from multiple outlets about tomorrow's announcement. If Google doesn't announce this, someone's going to have egg all over their face.

Lol. But honestly, I feel for these guys. That said, IMHO they blew their chance to make their money.

    1. i have grande and in addition to the tivo there's this weird battery box thing. what is that? would getting google fiber get rid of that thing?

    2. i've grown to like the actual tivo box. would i be able to use google fiber with a tivo brand tivo?

Pretty sure no on no. 2.

I have a substantial amount invested in windows media center, cable card, server space, and hd homerun prime. I will dump all that stuff tomorrow for google fiber and not look back.

Definition of sunk costs. NOt to be included in any ROI calculation, the result of which clearly indicates that Google Fiber is indeed the best thing since sliced bread.
