Google to announce ultra high speed Internet in Austin

The city of Austin and Google Inc. are scheduled to make an announcement next week that sources say relates to installing high-speed Internet access to the city.
The installation of what's called Google Fiber would be a major step for technology-centric Austin. Google disclosed Friday that more than 100 community leaders and elected officials are scheduled to attend the April 9 announcement at Brazos Hall.
California-based Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) operated an office in Austin from October 2008 to early 2009. It closed as part of a cost-savings measure that moved 20 jobs to other offices around the country.
Google operates a sales and marketing office on North Mopac Expressway, which remains open.

Here is some pricing plans they have on their site. I think this is just for Kansas City, but I would bet that it will stay the same or very close.http://fiber.google.com/about/

I have FTTH through Grande, and get anywhere from 35 Mbps to 65Mbps+ on download, and 4Mbps upload, and I'm paying around $120.

I will be all over Google.

Wonder what this will do to Time Warner and AT&T and their cap plans.

Hopefully this doesn't kill Grande - I would switch for that speed and those numbers, but I give Grande a helluva lot of credit for putting in fiber and offering better service and prices than I was getting from TWC and AT&T. Hell, Google should buy Grande, instant userbase and fiber network.

Does it offer LHN? Ah, who am I kidding.

this is good for everyone in austin. it will drive down the price of broadband, at least in the areas where google has coverage.

i'm surprised someone hasn't stated that they aren't getting this because google will know even more about you.

TW will have to up their speeds big time if they want to compete with Google.

Also, I just got a boner.

    Yes, yes they do.

    http://fiber.google.com/plans/channels/

They offer every channel we watch or would watch, including Smithsonian.

I'm not getting this, because then google would know more about me.

Google offers LHN, but not AMC or HBO. Hopefully the main thing that comes out of this is prices for competitors becomes reasonable, $70 for unlimited 1 GB speeds will be hard to beat, another $40 for TV service. They also have an interesting option where you pay the $300 installation and get free 5 down 1 up speeds guaranteed for 7 years

You get a 2TB DVR - lots of data mining potential there. Plus 1TB of cloud storage.

You also get a Nexus 7 tablet as your remote control.

Makes me wonder if Google's ultimate goal is to get Android devices everywhere (in their fight against Apple/Microsoft), and to get in on TV advertising, since as a TV provider, they'll have local ad slots.

And on the Nexus tablet they provide as they remote (7"), you can watch TV in other rooms through their app. That I like, right now I'd have to get an expensive Tivo add-on to do that.

Reading the Google Fiber Blog, it sounds like when they start prepping for your neighborhood, you have to select a plan within a certain timeframe, otherwise when they get to your neighborhood, your house won't be wired up and they might not come back to your neighborhood anytime soon. Saves them a lot of money on installs, and also means that it puts pressure on people to go with Google now or miss out.

Even if you're not going to do the Gigabit plan at the start, it sounds like you should sign up for the free stuff just to get the fiber run to your house in case you want to upgrade in the future.

A few years ago (2009?) when Time Warner was threatening some ridiculous caps and prices on Austin, I remember somebody on the City Council threatening to revoke whatever arrangements Time Warner had with the city, and that was a big part of why TW backed down.

I wonder how this will play out at the political level. I'm sure TW is dumping money into campaign funds at the state level as we speak.

Okay, THIS, I would switch over for.

The ONLY hesitations I have are (1) my wife's email addresses, which are her primary business contact points, are TW Roadrunner addresses. It would be a pain converting over from those, making sure that everyone who refers her business has the new address, etc. Any way to facilitate that easily? And (2), man, I'd miss AMC. I watch a lot of $#@! on there -- it's one of my go-to channels when nothing is on. And interestingly, having the LHN is not that big an attraction for me anymore -- I'm just not into watching snuff films.

They'll leave drops for each house in a neighborhood if that person decides in the future to get the service. What they want is enough people in a neighborhood to justify the initial install cost. Verizon did the same thing. Word of mouth will do the rest.

So reading up on this a lot more, a couple of things stand out:

Google wants this to be a profitable business and thinks it can be. I actually agree with that sentiment, because the US has been waiting for somebody to offer better internet service at a decent price. Most people do not realize how ass-$#@!ed we are getting over the current offerings. Google benefits from TV advertising as well as Android app sales.

The second thing, that I kind of already mentioned, is that one of the ways Google is keeping costs down (besides messing only with fiber) is by doing whole neighborhoods at once (at least the homes that signed up in that neighborhood) and then moving on. There won't be Google installers randomly traveling around, say an installer doing jobs in Rosedale, then Hyde Park, then the Triangle, etc. They will all be concentrated in a single neighborhood at any one time, and they won't go back to bypassed homes until well down the road. Saves a lot of time and money and gets a maximum amount of houses hooked up in the shortest time.

Seriously BT? She hasn't switched over to her "business name".com email? If I see an email address that refers to anything other than their website, I normally don't do business with them on that alone.

    [anecdote]

I lived in Mountain View when Google rolled out their free municipal wifi. This was back in ~2005.

I called Comcast to cancel my internet service. The retention department offered me half price for 1 year. I declined. Then $10/month for one year. Then $5/month for one year.

She markets to brides -- wimmens aint as sophisticated as you are. And now that I think of it, her primary email address for the business IS the businessname.com, so maybe it would just be a hassle with her personal email address (still used for a LOT of purposes, but I imagine that it could be undone over time).

having a tw or other provider address as your business email is akin to having a .biz website. and if you have one of those, you're either selling scentsy or you don't want people to do business with you because the math is too complicated.

They can probably run it along the power lines like some of the other fiber projects (Grande, etc.). They may have also bought some of the excess fiber that was built up during the dotcom days and then never used.

I'm curious what their full TOS is, and whether people are running commercial websites out of their houses.

I still can't wrap my head around having GB fiber in my house. Seems like people would be running usenet and bittorrent 24/7.

Well, to be fair, she's been in this business a LONG time, before "businessname.com" was something smaller business did that often, and she's marketing mostly to wimmens (thus, the Scentsy comparison is not that far off), and finally, I realized that she DID convert to a businessname.com address a couple of years ago.

Still, she's had a TW personal address for 15 years, at least. It's the address all her family and friends know. THAT will be a pain.

Wonder if this will force AT&T and Time Warner and the others to drop their prices or up their offerings. It's got to have some impact.

    Okay, Google check:

    http://www.webpronews.com/time-warne...-fiber-2013-01
Back when Google Fiber first launched, Time Warner Cable, the incumbent ISP in the area, went into panic mode. The ISP even began offering cash rewards to anybody who had information on Google Fiber’s activities. It was all a little seedy, and made it look like TWC was more concerned with crushing Google Fiber in any other way besides directly competing.

Well, it seems that TWC has finally realized that the only way to beat them is to compete with them, and is now reportedly offering faster speeds at lower prices to its subscribers in and near Kansas City. The Consumerist is reporting that one such subscriber recently received news from TWC that his monthly bill was being cut while getting a 50 percent speed increase.
    LOL
