My appointment is tomorrow. Has anyone replaced the network box with a "smart" switch? I have the Netgear GS108Tv2 I intend to use in place of the Google appliance.

I looked into doing it but lost interest. Even with that switch, you still need a pfsense box and you have to configure a $#@!load of routes/firewall/network settings.

I certainly hope that isn't the case. http://flyovercountry.org/2014/02/go...-part-1-vlans/
It states that pfsense isn't a requirement. I'll soon find out.
This post will focus on the setting up the Netgear GS108Tv2. The switch configuration falls into two main parts: setting up the VLANs, and the QoS. pfSense is not required, most any modern router will do, but a VLAN + QoS capable switch is required.

You need the pfsense box to get Google TV to work.

I only have Fiber 1000. The switch worked but I had to visit the damn Google store downtown to get a power cord for the fiber jack. https://support.google.com/fiber/faq/3333053?hl=en
If the Fiber Jack is a model GFLT110 and you opt not to use the Network Box, you must provide power to the Fiber Jack by a power pack, which you can obtain from your Google Fiber Installation Specialist. If Fiber Jack is a model GFLT100, it comes equipped with a power pack that you must use whether you use the Network Box or not.
They don't give them out to the installers and the jack holes with Google support have no clue about this process. Weak. The model number of my jack is GSLT110.

Now I have a new problem. The speed test using the GF network box yielded 900/900. After installing the switch and connecting my DD-WRT flashed router, I only get 300/300. :( After some research, I discovered that DD-WRT doesn't have CRT and my Atheros based router might be too old to reach gigabit speeds on WAN>LAN. https://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewto...12bb6e748eb067 Bummer. I'm thinking I should pickup an Asus RT-AC68U. Anyone have it?

Gotcha. They've been so cryptic about next steps for the last 60 days, I dunno know what to think. Living so close to MoPac, they laid down the big dig $#@! long ago and then slowly crept the last 1/3 mile into our Austin 'hood over so many months that every other day we'd get some door hanger that said one thing and the hotline said another and the website said another. I like the price and the bundle, and hopefully the speed/ease of use pays off because their install has been a total clustercuss. I get that it's major infrastructure but the gaping street holes at Halloween for the kids, the overlapping with our street repaving, the hitting of waterlines just in our little Austin HOA has been a little worse than you'd expect for a sub answering to one of the most powerful corporations on Earth.

But as long as porn streams faster, I'm probably cool with it.

Apparently they have gotten much faster with the installation. They started construction Monday on our street and were finished for the most part that evening. Tuesday there was a crew patching some stuff up and there's nobody out there today so I guess they are done.

I believe the "splicer" should be coming out to the house next. Once they're done, you can call Google, tell them that you're ready for the installation and they'll set it up. Or you can just wait and eventually it'll get done. 2-3 weeks after the splicer.

Our box just got installed yesterday and that's what the tech told me was coming next. They do seem to be going pretty fast right now.

  • #1067
We had box installed and splicer done yesterday. They are also doing a lot of connection work on the big boxes around the neighborhood, so it shouldn't be long now.

We are getting TV, Internet, and phone. I have a badass wifi router, so hopefully pretty easy to set that up as an access point.

Install scheduled next month. I don't need my own router unless I wanna upgrade from theirs, right?

FYI on the construction process, from our experience it goes in stages and their are multiple periods where no work will be done for days. Doubtful they're done in one day. It was a couple months from the time they started in our hood til the time they were completely finished.

You don't need your own router. I wanted to use my own equipment because I employ a lot of features with open source firmware that aren't available through their network box.

How often is everyone's IP address changing? Mine is getting changed once a week, which sucks because I use an SSH tunnel to access my home network. My TW address was dynamic but I always kept the same IP after each renewal.

Got the cable run to the house today, fingers crossed that I'm only 2-3 weeks out from getting it connected. The guys doing the grunt work today were great as my neighbor and I pestered them with questions. Was cool to see how all the conduit is run around my cul de sac, and how strong the street-to-house cable is. It's about the thickness of a pencil, bends pretty easy to about 45* I'd say, and looked plenty strong to survive getting run over by a car, clipped with a weedeater, and being jammed through several hundred feet of conduit. Impressive. The guy doing the house install made me laugh - I asked him a question about the house setup, and he stopped for a second, smiled at me, and said "I'm sorry ... outside only." Very diplomatic.

As an aside - I have Cat5e running from the outside connection area to my study. It's what the existing Time Warner hookup uses, alongside the coax. Can Google Fiber use that same cable? Said another way, do they run on copper into the house, or are they doing to have to put fiber into the house?

Got it installed before the holidays. Our older house only had cat 5...not cat 5e or 6. Don't really know all the differences but we did see 700/400 upload and download in testing.

But my tablets and some computers are getting $#@! wifi now. Is their router not great? Do I need to place any other devices throughout the home? I did set up an airport express upstairs but it's not doing much.

And yes to question above...google did say cat 5e or 6 were 'best.'

No. They will run fiber from the NAP box outside to whatever interior room you designate for the Google Fiber gateway/router to go.

You might be able to talk them into putting the fiber/ethernet jack outside the house, it's worth a try. The jack is POE, so you'd have to verify the existing cat5e cable you have running outside will power the jack, otherwise you'll get nothing.

Yeah we're gonna have a strategy session before they do anything. POE is fine, everything is home-run to my office closet, so I can put an injector there w/o issue. Alternately they can run the NAP into my garage, and then I can steal a Cat6 run back into the office to connect up the network box. We'll figure it out.

So lots of talk about the internet service, but how is the TV service? I didn't sign up for TV, but was considering it once its installed next week. Right now, I use a cable card with WMC in the main living room and then access TV and recorded TV with some XBox360s. I really like having only one box in the extra rooms, rather than a DVR box, plus a Roku or something. When I signed up, they said that they have an Android app for Google TV, but I couldn't find out if it could do everything a regular box can (schedule recordings, pause Live TV, etc.). I know obviously I'd need to have one DVR box somewhere, but if I could drop that in a closet and just use Fire TVs or Shields in all the rooms, that would be perfect.

I'm pretty sure you can watch/control DVR/etc. with their Android/IOS apps. I only use the one on my Nexus phone and it works fine.

The picture quality is $#@!ing amazing. Higher bitrates than any other provider in the US. The TV box is better than any of the other ones I've used (TWC, uverse, Dish, DTV). It's about the size of a thin paperback book, and since the remote is Bluetooth, you can put it anywhere.

The gateway is actually the DVR, so I'm not sure you even need a TV box anywhere. Just get on Fiber chat and ask if you have questions, they're pretty knowledgeable.

So it's done. At first, via google's speedtest, it looks like this:

    To which I'm like this:

But then I went to speakeasy.net to test it and it looks like this:

And I'm kind of like this:

Don't get me wrong, its still faster than what I had by far, and with all the $#@! on my home network, I should probably unplug everything by one PC and rerun it, but I'm confused if this looks right.

    Try fast.com, Netflix's speed test.

I'm in KC, but the TV is great. There is a Netflix app in the TV box, but I prefer using the roku still. The on demand stuff seems way more user friendly than Cox or time Warner. They support all the TV channel apps for your phone or tablet. The fiber TV app is pretty good and great quality, but not every live show is available. It seems a bit random which ones you can't view.

The box is also a chromecast receiver, so you can throw audio/video from your tablet or pc up on the TV. Overall it's the best TV service I've had. Huge fan.

Got mine installed yesterday. Speedtests vary wildly between the different services. Plugged in I get 700-900 up and down.

On my Macbook, I can get over 500 down, 400 up using the Google Fiber wifi. Phones vary from 150-400 downstairs. I am using the wifi on the TV boxes upstairs, so they actually provide better coverage than my old router did. 85-90. 100 is max there.

TV Service is great. So seamless between boxes. I love having one master recording schedule. The TV boxes are basically just streaming devices like a roku. I can leave one TV, go to another room, and turn right to the station I was on without missing anything. I would have to rewind a little bit. Or, I can hit pause and record, go upstairs, and immediately resume where I was.

The TV box did crash a couple of times when we were setting up all of the recordings and when I was first playing around with the on demand, but that doesn't seem to be an issue any more.

Also, good timing on TW Spectrum. They just raised my bill on the statement 3 days ago because my promo period had ended. Done with that $#@! now.

God dammit I'm tired of waiting for this $#@!. My internet with Spectrum has been up and down like a $2 whore today and at least one of my neighbors is having the same issue. I call in to report an outage. They refuse to believe it was an outage and it must be something with my house. They couldn't give a $#@! that I was reporting for multiple houses until I asked to speak with a supervisor. Suddenly, then it became a problem they were willing to report.

Does Google give you the runaround whenever there is an issue?

All I can say is they were pretty good at fixing some busted sprinkler heads and such when they did an install at my neighbors. They were all subcontractors so my neighbor had to call Google, but they sent someone out to fix it pretty quick.

I canceled TWC on Monday since everything as working good. It was surprising easy. Basically, the guy asked some questions about what I was getting, told him that the asymmetrical 1Gbit was far faster than anything TWC was offering, the quality of the TV picture was vastly better (not that I actually have it) and the price was cheaper and basically guaranteed not to change, ohh and no contract. His response was "Wow, that's fantastic. OK, I've processed your cancellation, just return your equipment to a local store. Thanks." I was expecting a little bit of a fight, got none.

Got told today that my house will be "fiber ready" in mid-Feb some time. Meanwhile, my NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR, who splits his fiber from the same concrete box as mine, is scheduled for his in-house install next Friday.

Deep breath. It's still better than TWC.

For those in Travis County with Time Warner or Spectrum or whatever... how's it working for you? I've had TWC internet for years, and it generally performed well for me, but the last two years have been $#@!. Especially from late afternoon through 11 pm or midnight, my pings soar and speed becomes very inconsistent. Web browsing usually remains passably functional, but gaming isn't really possible due to lag. My S/N and power levels are good and they've replaced my modem, splitters, connectors and the drop to my house with no improvement. Cable TV doesn't seem to be affected. I don't think the issue is on my property, but they don't seem interested in looking at the node or plant (or they won't talk to me about it.)

Does anyone else see poor performance on TWC, especially during "peak" hours of afternoon and evening?

As I get used to the TV interface, it's really great. Streaming and On Demand options are so integrated. Movie already started you want to watch? If it's available through on demand or Netflix, just hit play and start from beginning.

    Picture is great.

  • #1096
I was wrong. It does not include Netflix results. Probably same reason Apple TV doesn't include them. Netflix won't let them.

  • #1097
Which makes sense. Netflix doesn't want to be a passthru delivery service. They are now a content provider and need people to login to the apps to promote their original series.

I'll just use Apple TV for Netflix. Much better interface. And faster. Netflix locked up the Fiber box and I had to restart it. Luckily it's very easy to do with the Fiber app.

I don't know if it did anything, complaining to Google, but I got my home install email last night :). Now getting set up at the end of Jan. Booyah.

I had no complaints about TWC internet outside of their change in pricing with Spectrum. We use it at my office (house in Hyde Park) and its extremely fast.

  • #1100
I also never had any problems with TWC internet. Their TV, that was a different matter. It didn't help that we were still using Tivo because we loved the interface and that stupid tuning adapter was always $#@!ing up. Plus, some of the channels would get real pixellated at times.

Never had too much issue with customer service. Mostly it was around cable cards, and I just called the cable card # directly, bypassing the front end. They are pretty sharp in that department.
