Texas hasn’t offered many prospects in the 2017 class, but one recruit that caught the staff’s attention early on was four-star Denton Guyer quarterback Shawn Robinson.
Arguably the country’s top quarterback in his class, Robinson plans to see Baylor on Tuesday and said a trip to Texas this weekend is in the works although nothing has been set in stone.
“I might be heading to Austin,” Robinson said. “I’m not sure yet. If I do go, it will be this weekend. I just want to go down there and spend some time with the coaches. I’m not sure exactly what I’m looking for, but I just want to see how they work with their quarterbacks.”
Robinson is ranked as the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback and No. 15 overall recruit in the nation, according to 247Sports. Texas offered back in July. Since then, Robinson has added offers from numerous major programs.
The 6-foot-3, 195-pounder shined as a sophomore, passing for 2,799 yards, rushing for 1,416 yards and scoring 50 total touchdowns en route to leading Denton Guyer to the second round of the 6A DII playoffs.
Robinson said it’s too early to name favorites, but he is definitely interested in Texas.
“It’s Texas,” Robinson said. “We all grew up watching Texas since we were little. That’s all everyone talked about. So yeah, I’m interested.”
DT Marvin Wilson was offered today...247 composite has him as a 5*
Thoughts from Scout analyst Gabe Brooks on some of the up-and-coming 2017 prospects from East Texas:
WR Damion Miller -- his coaches call him a faster Fred Ross. That should immediately get your attention. Tall, athletic, great deep threat who emerged in John Tyler's playoff run. Already has a Texas Tech offer. There will be many more.
WR Octavius Evans -- early four-star recipient. He and Miller give the region two big-time playmakers at the receiver position. Both are tall and have excellent frame potential. I know the new OC at Center very well so I'm gonna get with him soon to see what's up with Evans' recruiting of late. Texas Tech and LaTech have already offered.
S Lakendrick VanZandt -- two-way standout who may get recruited at receiver and safety. Good length so he can add bulk. Good production for a good Henderson team this past fall. Should have a big two years ahead of him. I like Van Zandt's top-end speed and Ebner's quick-twitch athleticism.
WR Trestan Ebner -- also a two-way standout. Little smaller than Van Zandt, but equally as dangerous as a playmaker. I could see both wind up as defensive recruits, VZ as a safety and Ebner as a corner. Both have good ball skills, especially Ebner.
ATH Bryson Smith -- another John Tyler guy who will team with Miller to give JT a mean 1-2 punch the next two years. Smith is expected to play QB, but may get recruited at multiple spots. Coaches say he's reminiscent of Greg Ward.
LB Kelton Collier -- I remember asking Jeff Traylor back in January before any of the Texas job stuff came up if Collier was gonna be an FBS guy. He said he's definitely got a chance. Similar to Demarco Boyd in that he's undersized right now for a linebacker, but plays larger and meaner than you'd expect.
ATH Cam Haller -- you will not find a bigger Cam Haller fan. Wrote a full feature on him at the same time as the 2017 East Texas introduction. Great build for a running back and huge production for a kid who was only a sophomore. Two-sport standout who's also great at baseball, where he plays catcher. Marshall coach is extremely high on him. Haller is a BEAST when it comes to weight-room and testing: 395 bench, 455 squat, 4.52 40. He also told me he's grown up a Texas fan. Here's the link to that feature: texas.scout.com/player/8068029n-cam-haller
South Grand Prairie DB Jeffrey Okudah recieved an offer from Texas today on his visit.
JK Dobbins should be the next offer. Guy is an animal with the ball in his hands, but reminds me of Quandre on Defense. He is the 5th ranked player in the state for the 2017.

Update on DT Marvin Wilson, courtesy of Jason Higdon:
One of the teams in pursuit of him the hardest are the Longhorns, and with good reason. As it stands right now Texas will only have three scholarship defensive tackles on its roster by the time Wilson could join the program. Of course those numbers will grow. UT will add a couple of DTs in 2016. But that doesn’t lessen the importance of Wilson to the Longhorns staff, and they’ve let him know it.
”They want to keep in touch with me,” Wilson said. “They want to come watch me. They want me to come visit them with my family and come down a couple of times during the summer and also for games.” One thing the Longhorns have going for them is Wilson’s love for the coaching staff. “Brick Haley, Coach [Vance] Bedford, Coach [Charlie] Strong are three of the best coaches I’ve seen so far,” he said. Texas is also benefitting from the fact that Strong is a defensive-minded head coach. ”I really like that about Texas,” Wilson said. “They get the players they need to on the defensive side of the ball. When I went up there the defense was just dominating practice.” Wilson took in a Texas practice about a month ago and came away impressed with the consistent intensity. ”Coach Bedford and the other coaches were getting in everybody’s grill,” he said. “They are going to make you play and make you play hard. That’s what I like about the Texas coaches.” Wilson said he got to sit in the film room with Haley and the defensive line and that he appreciated the way UT’s defensive line coach went about his business. “I went down there, got to sit in the film room and watched how Coach Haley breaks down film and how he coaches them up,” he said. “He lets the players coach themselves throughout film as well.”
isn't that one of Dany's dragons?
Just offered OL Walker Little from Belleaire Episcopal - he seems fired up about it, especially since we're his first offer.
Between this and also being first for Carter, it looks like we're finally caught up on our evaluation cycle management
Update on Florida WR Darnell Solomon from Wilkerson:
Charlie Strong struck gold in Florida during the 2015 recruiting cycle. Will he be able to pull it off again in 2016? That remains to be seen but he has peaked the interest of at least one four-star Florida prospect in wide receiver Darnell Salomon (Miami/Central). The U.S Army All-American, who is rated as the No. 18 receiver and No. 93 player overall in 2016, was hyped when he picked up an unexpected offer from UT in early April.
”I was real excited for this offer especially from it coming out of nowhere,” Salomon said. “My head coach just told me I have to give coach [Vance] Bedford a call because he’s going to offer you.”
In doing so the Longhorns joined the offers mix with Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Central Florida and West Virginia. All of this is truly a “Dream come true” for the 6-foot-3, 205-pound receiver with 4.4. speed. “It caught me off guard a little,” he said of all of his offers. “I was proud of myself to see that I’ve gotten this far. At the end of my ninth grade year I started to get interest and my coaches told me to stay focused and really focus on my game.” That hard work seems to be paying off as schools like Alabama have made him a top priority.
“A lot of schools say it’s because of my size and my speed,” he said. “They think I’m a great deep threat player. I’d compare myself to AJ Green because of his size and his length that stretches across the field.” With all of these SEC and ACC offers, will Salomon really consider going to school at UT? “Oh yeah,” he said. “There are other schools, a whole bunch of teams. It don’t really matter if it’s the SEC, Pac 12, or ACC. It just depends on what is better for me.”
Salmon tells HD that one of the biggest things Texas has going for itself is that several of his school administrators went to UT and speak highly of the University to him all the time. “They keep telling me how great the school is and how they want to come for a visit with me,” said Salomon, who wants to major in business. Salomon said he’d try to visit the Longhorns this summer. “I’d most likely try to make that an official visit, probably my first one,” he said.
The All-American receiver is interested in UT so much that he lists them among his favorites. “Texas, Alabama, Oregon, FSU, Michigan, Oklahoma and LSU,” he said as to the schools he is considering.
Also a note on RB Kam Martin, same source:
I got a text message earlier today from Baylor running back commitment Kameron Martin saying, “Hope to see you next week.” When I asked him where he was going to be he responded, “Hook’Em. State track meet.” The 2015 Track and Field State Championships will be held at Mike Myers Track Complex from May 14-16. Martin will be running in the 4x1 and 4x2 relays.
He told me he would visit the Longhorns when he was in Austin.
i know i know, wrong thread. too late to delete
We're gonna have two littles on our line, it'll be an ad nauseum story like mccoy n ship roommates, some such
5 star Ath/RB J.K. Dobbins
Texas likes to take its time to evaluate prospects, especially rising juniors.
La Grange athlete J.K. Dobbins understands that. But sometimes it’s hard to be patient. Dobbins, a five-star prospect, grew up a Texas fan and has been waiting for an offer from the Longhorns for quite some time.
“I’ve always been a big Texas fan,” Dobbins said. “My whole family loves Texas too. They’ve been pushing me to go there. But I have to get an offer first. Really, it was my dream school growing up, and it’s still a dream school. I hope I do get the offer.”
La Grange is about an hour outside of Austin, and Dobbins said he would love to stay close to home so his family can see him play at the next level.
Dobbins didn’t have much contact with the coaching staff prior to making an unofficial visit to the Forty Acres last month for the program’s spring game. There, Dobbins got an opportunity to meet running backs coach Tommie Robinson.
Dobbins hopes to keep building a relationship with Robinson and impress him at one of Texas’ camps this summer.
At 5-foot-9, 185 pounds, Dobbins can play everything from running back to wide receiver to defensive back. As a sophomore, Dobbins rushed for 2,230 yards and scored 39 total touchdowns.
Dobbins currently holds offers from Arizona State, California, Oklahoma, TCU and a few others. He is ranked as the No. 2 all-purpose back in the nation and No. 5 overall recruit in the state in 2017, according to 247Sports Composite.
He comes from a pretty bad family. I'm not saying he's heading down that path, but the coaches need to dig in to his background pretty thoroughly to make sure he doesn't have the criminal tendencies that some of his family members do. His dad was a hell of a high school rb, but was too short to get a D1 scholarship. He ran track for a little while but ended up dropping out. He moved back to La Grange and went downhill fast. He was in and out of jail until he passed away a year or two ago.
There's a big crop of in-state talent at RB for 2017. Toneil Carter, JK Dobbins, Bernard Goodwater, Eno Benjamin, Kaegun Williams, Lazarus Fisher, A.J. Blacknall, are all guys who can immediately make an impact on the field. TCU's already snagged another one of these guys, Rashaud Paul. We should get in on the ground floor with at least one of the aforementioned guys ASAP. OU's already made Dobbins a priority, according to 247.

Toneil Carter is gonna be special
Two key 2017 prospects to watch out for, from Jeff Howe:
1. Walker Little, OT, Houston Episcopal (2017)
Recruiting along the offensive line isn't going exceptionally well for 2016, so why not get a head start on the rising junior crop? Little has tremendous size at 6-feet-7-inches and 295-pounds and his sophomore film features some of the most impressive highlight clips you'll ever see for a young offensive lineman. He seems to have the nasty streak and the desire to finish a block Texas offensive line coach Joe Wickline looks for and, more importantly, he's a pure tackle, a position where it's getting harder and harder to find linemen who can stay there down the road. He's said to like Texas a lot and, although he's not a package deal in the true sense of the term, the Longhorns have the potential to be the one school to land Little and five-star defensive tackle Marvin Wilson. Offensive line offers are dicey when you offer prospects at a young stage of their development, but the Longhorns don't have much of a choice given the way things have gone. At the very least, this looks like an offer to a prospect who will stick at tackle with some projectable tools at the position.
2. Lagaryonn Carson, DE, Texarkana Liberty-Eylau (2017)
The cousin of Texas A&M running back Tra Carson, Lagaryonn has two impressive early offers from Texas and Alabama. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound end has the look of someone who could play the 4i in Texas' three-down look. He's also someone who looks like he'll bring a lot of versatility to the table for a defensive line. What's interesting about Texas getting on Carson early is his area recruiter is Jeff Traylor, who's been viewed by his peers as one of the best evaluators there is when it comes to eyeballing East Texas talent. Carson's offer came shortly after Traylor made his visit to see him in person, which isn't exactly a coincidence. Texas hasn't had success getting recruits from Texarkana for some time, so this one should be considered an uphill climb. Still, credit Texas for getting in and offering before a lot of schools – including Texas A&M – did.
