I really love this film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's musical. Great pacing and performances, and Burton gets everything right. Depp is incredible, despite not having a powerful voice.
I just watched this one too. Pretty bloody. I'm not big on musicals, think they're kind of stupid. Johnny Depp is a bad-ass though and I'd like to titty-$#@! Helena Bonham Carter.

Watched "Hostel" last night once it was clear that Gundy's team arrived in Lubbock ready to pillow bite all night long.

On a scale of 1-10, I'd give it a 6.5. Of the points awarded, 90% of them are for the brunette with the amazing tits!

A good movie with lots of hot French ass.
Tres disappointment. No complaints about the hot french ass. Although the english girl certainly had something going as well. I just found the main star much less believable and less likeable. I didn't buy him or his success with women for a second The Spanish Apartment felt really true, but this one, not so much.

Guy should have studied Truffaut a bit harder. I wanted it to be a bit more like Bed and Board.

Really odd, secretive Hungarian movie about a group of ticket-checkers in the Budapest subway system. Set and filmed entirely underground, with all the unavoidable imaginative content that entails. I wonder if there is a history of subterranean art I could find.

This is a must for any HDTV owner. It reminded me of Koyannisquatsi without Philip Glass.

A movie with no conventional plot: merely a collection of expertly photographed scenes. Subject matter has a highly environmental theme.

I'm too lazy to find a cover but:

Manhunter (William Peterson and Brian Cox) - The original Hannibal Lecter film. Entertaining but not great.

Colditz (Damian Lewis) - A love story wrapped around the WWII prison camp. I think this was a made for TV thing in the UK. I would not recommend it.

Now that the election is over it is time to get to work, and this was work.

    Contempt (1963)

Glad I got this bitch out of the way. Bardot's ass and Palance's creep laugh make it worthwhile on the surface. I liked it because it seemed to succeed on every maddening level I could figure out and I am confident on a whole lot of other levels that I couldn't.

Some of Godard's films remind me of when I was young and hung out with some friends that you met at the lake and you spent all your time swimming and hanging out on their porch.

In this one, he invites you back but he's grown up and built a new place, and while you appreciate the nice evening you are having at their place, the conversation is kind of tiresome. You want to go back and swim and hang out on the porch with Jean Seberg like in the old days.

The middle long argument scene was interminable, like watching some six year old try to make a free throw in a basket that is too high and you know he won't make it but you kind of stare in wonderment that the kid just keeps trying. The length of the scene, the repetitive music -- Godard is such a $#@! but somehow his ********ing with you is kind of impressive.

It took me three separate cuts to finish this thing off. I liked it, but didn't enjoy it.

In an academic kind of way.

That's right, a film about Donkey Punching. Slightly more entertaining than Daddy Day Camp.

I guess it was okay, but pretty disappointing considering the director. Not really what I expected - it felt like I was watching a Steven Spielberg movie.

    After the Wedding (2006).

A silly plot if you think about it over the top, but pretty good.

Not sure if Mads Mikkelson will every really be more than a James Bond EuroVillian, but he and the rest are pretty good in this.

Some of the parts are straight out of "Westerns 101," but since John Ford wrote that book, that's alright with me. What really bothered me though was that the marshal was played by the same guy who voiced Friar Tuck in Disney's Robin Hood. Dude has some interesting vocal abilities. Wayne is at his subtle best.

    A rockin' double feature.

I love Bunuel, but I of course didn't get "Chien Andalou". No bother. Just kids having fun.

Dryer is something else, and while Vampyr dragged for me, the early images were terrific.

I don't think I have ever seen anybody capture this feeling of dark forces just outside the frame, about to crush everything.

Day of Wrath and Passion of Joan of Arc are far better, and must sees, but this was interesting.

Not Lean's best, and I hate the English...

...but I love the Welsh. My favorite part of the movie were the accents and some of the songs. Pretty sentimental at times, but worth watching. I really like Donald Crisp.

Peckinpah manages to simultaneously achieve both an at times unbearable intensity, and an unrelieved sense of boredom. Watching this kinda gave me a feeling of dull, monotonous pain. It's odd. Also, I found Hoffman's "transformation" unlikely and predictable, but the movie is better than I'm making it sound. I need to think about it more, some aspects were wonderful (the church party, the filming of the violence, etc).

The title of the book is Horseman, Pass By. Why are Yeats' poems such a popular source for titles? Anyways, I loved it. Never got too preachy, and the title character is an infinitely better, more relevant and more interesting sociopath (I don't really like the term) than someone like Patrick Bateman. Newman sometimes plays his roles so easily it comes close to bothering me, unlike

The priest really annoyed me, as did the love interest. I thought Brando laid it on a bit thick at times, but was excellent. Everything else was kinda boring.

I watched this in a UT film class many years ago and just remember being bored. I'll watch it again if I find it on Blu-Ray.

    And now,

    Sukiyaki Western Django

This movie is pure Japanese crazy. It's a Japanese remake of A Fistful of Dollars, which was a remake of Kurosawa's Yojimbo, which was based on a Dashiell Hammet novel called Red Harvest.

All the actors are Japanese. It isn't dubbed and all the actors speak in engrish. They appear to be reading phoenetically from cue cards. It is interesting to say the least. The opening scene with Tarantino is bizarre.

Donald Crisp is the greatest father in movie history. (This and national velvet.) Worth watching? And beer is worth drinking.

Oh Christ. Oh good god. Quite possibly my favorite movie. Absolutely riveting. Eve Marie Saint and bulbous nose annoying and or boring?
Take these three movies, and stick in Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia or the Wild Bunch and you have a perfect wasted weekend.

Sorry a bit overwrought, but these are giddy, life-is-worth living types of flicks.

Lawrence, Zhivago, and Brief Encounter are better, I think.

There were too many Tiny Tim moments from the narrator. Maybe I'll like it better when I have children, or something.

The priest and the woman almost ruined the whole movie for me. The two bits in which the priest asked for a cigarette and a beer - just awful. And the woman was totally unable to provide a counterpart to Brando, unlike what's her name in Streetcar.

Lawrence and Zhivago are bloated and tiresome. The only thing that makes them palatable a second time is the pretty images -- not the story or the script. Pretty, but no where near as tight and taut as Bridge. Brief Encounter deserves a shout out but hard to compare a simple drama like this with the likes of the other three.

The priest and the woman almost ruined the whole movie for me. The two bits in which the priest asked for a cigarette and a beer - just awful. And the woman was totally unable to provide a counterpart to Brando, unlike what's her name in Streetcar.
The woman? She was a perfect counterpoint to Brando. She only won Best Supporting Actress for the role. Not normally that big a deal to me but you are talking about one of the top fifty american films of all time and probably two truly great performances in Brando and Saint -- I thought both Lee J. Cobb and Steiger were even better.

On the Waterfront perfectly mixes myth with the history of the labor movement and it does it with phenomenol acting in an incredibly tight script.

You must take back everything you say.

  • #184
I'll admit that I have only the fuzziest recollections of Zhivago's plot, but the visual aspects redeem it. And as for Lawrence being tiresome? The subject had one of the most interesting lives of the 20th century! The movie was phenomenal, if a little on the long side and not exactly what one would call subtle.

And I won't like On the Waterfront, no matter how many glowing adjectives you manage to pack into a sentence. If we ever meet at a Shaggy event, you can challenge me to a duel.

Ikiru--I'm currently on a Kurosawa jag in my Netflix queue and hadn't ever seen this before. I've heard it described as Kurosawa does Capra, and there are some broad similarities to It's a Wonderful Life, but I found this to be both more pessimistic than It's a Wonderful Life and more uplifting. Interesting to see all the of the Seven Samurai (excepting Toshiro Mifune) walking around in 20th century attire. I liked it a great deal. Meant to watch it again with the commentary track but I was too eager to get on with the next flick and sent it back.

    The Savages

Wow. Really depressing. Reasons to see.

    1) You have an elder who is about to die or suffering from dementia. This will prep you.

    2) You are a Chris Partlow fan and you want to see him as a Nigerian caregiver.

    3) You need something to distract you from the BCS.

See it this Christmas instead of It's a Wonderful Life/Beating.

    Powell and Pressburger's "49th Parallel". (1941)

UBoat survivors try to escape to the US through Canada. A great story and some great acting. The outdoor scenes of Canada, especially the ocean and lake scenes, are really nice. Olivier is pretty funny.

    Fall From Grace.

A documentary about Westboro Baptist Church. I see blind hatred all the time on message boards in the form of harmless sports and school smack, but what Fred Phelps preaches is far beyond anything that anyone outside of the Phelps Clan can actually feel. I'm amazed there have been so few attempts on his life. The most sickening part was when the children were interviewed. It made me want to vomit thinking that 99% of that church has been brainwashed from birth. I'm pretty sure there are suicide bombers who had more heart than that man.

Cool Hand Luke this afternoon at the Alamo Ritz. Before the screening they had three audience members compete in an egg eating competition. Most eggs eaten in three minutes won movie passes and a food and beverage credit. Also, during the screening the wait staff dropped hard boiled eggs at everyone's table just before that key scene.

    The Big Combo

    Jean Wallace. Yum.

A possible B-Movie Holy Trinity in The Big Combo, Gun Crazy, and the fantasticly underseen Terror in a Texas Town.

Essential, basic stuff. And a couple of swell dames.

Nick Cassavetes film. Some overacting (especially Ben Foster's character), but otherwise solid film.

This was pretty interesting. In itself, it isn't particularly good, but that is mostly because it was glued together from 30-year-old footage. It did make me realize how much better the movie would have been if it was completed as originally conceived at the time. It doesn't diminish my appreciation of the original version. I am not sure which is better. The way this one is forced to interweave some of the subsequently-shot footage in with the more seriously-toned Donner footage makes some of it seem tremendously hokey. It is probably worth a watch if you are a fan of the series and/or a student of movie history.

I liked this, but for some reason, I like the approach that 24 Hour Party People took to the general subject matter. Perhaps because the subject matter is dark.

    Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Strange. My expectations were beyond low, I was watching it in the early morning, having had too much coffee too late in the day.

This was the most languid comedy I have ever seen, and for that I give it some props. It's almost like a latter Neil Young album, where it's just kind of done in one sitting, but it is still decent.

I think I laughed kind of hard once. Like a nice walk in the park.
