Thread: The Movie You Just Watched

  1. #201

I really liked this. Has some similarities to Zimmerman's High Noon. I don't know how accurate the treatment of Thomas More as some sort of existential hero is (I doubt it's accurate at all), but that's beside the point. Great cast, especially Robert Shaw as Henry VIII. It was apparently a popular hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Somehow I doubt it would be today, which is rather sad.

    Step Brothers

One of the worst movies I have ever seen

    Han$#@!

    Really enjoyed this film.
Have always liked Will Smith and I thought the story was very interesting.

    H&K Go to White Castle

Never saw this, picked up on lark. Solid. The minorities at college/first job stuff seemed pretty spot on.

    Han$#@!

I stopped it halfway through or so. Really stupid movie. Reminded me of the type of movie that is mocked in Tropic Thunder.

    The Visitor

Excellent small movie about a stoic, isolated depressed man who makes a personal connection with some unlikely people leading to a wash of emotion. Richard Jenkins is awesome in it.

I have Man on Wire and The Dark Knight on deck.

    Sunrise (1927 Murnau)

Supposedly the first "sound" feature release -- silent with sound effects on the Movietone format.

I thought it was pretty damn good. Has a weird worldly vibe (Euro director -- filmed in the US). Some sublime shots. Basic core melodramatic emotional power. Murnau is one of the German Expressionists and if I understood German Expressionism, it would mean more than just some cool images.

This and City Lights and maybe The General are the three or so silent movies that are easiest to watch.

    Boy A (2007)

Terrific powerful little movie about redemption and the past. Pretty dark. Maybe too melodramatic and pat for some.

Reminded me vaguely of Dead Man's Shoes (greatness) and This is England. Maybe just because it was hard to understand the english, but mostly because of the dreary overcastness.

Night of the Living Dead. This was on my list of movies that I hadn't seen that I felt like I should see. It's a very solid movie in that you can see the plot points coming from a mile away, but still manage to get sort of creeped out when everything falls into place. Check it out if you haven't seen it.

    Two-Lane Blacktop (1971)

Not as entertaining as Hellman's "$#@!fighter", it's still a solid road picture. Oates is great as always, and for being terrible actors, Wilson and Taylor are pretty compelling.

Needed more Harry Dean Stanton and Kris Kristopherson.

bad santa (on comedy central right now)

Willie T. Stokes (Billy Bob Thornton) is a con man and a thief who teams up with his friend Marcus (Tony Cox), a midget, for a very special scam each year during the holiday season. Willie gets a job as Santa Claus at a shopping mall, his pal tags along as an elf, and they use their employee status to crack mall security and rob stores blind just before Christmas. However, there's one flaw to this plan -- Willie is a bitter, foul-mouthed and perpetually grouchy alcoholic who doesn't care for kids, and it's all he can do to keep himself from getting fired while on the job. The mall's manager (John Ritter, in his last film appearance) is certain something's wrong with the Santa he's hired, so he asks the mall's chief of security (Bernie Mac) to do some research on Willie. Meanwhile, one of the kids Willie is forced to talk to becomes a regular customer; overweight, awkward, and the frequent target of bullies, the boy manages to arouse something like sympathy from Willie, who tries to give him some advice and develops something vaguely resembling Christmas sprit along the way.

I've read I Am Legend twice and saw the Will Smith version. I loved the book and didn't like the ending in the recent film. I liked that the Heston picture tried to convey Neville's angst, alcoholism, and lust. It certainly wasn't a film masterpiece but I wanted to see it and I wasn't disappointed. Neither film was able to effectively express why Neville is Legend, which is the point that makes the book so special.

Blood Diamond- Holy $#@!. That was an very gritty, intense movie. Great performances all around. I finally didn't see Leo when I watched him on screen. He finally became a different character. He was a certified bad ass in this movie. Jennifer Connolly was hot as ever. And Djimon Hounsou was incredible.

Wall-E. Sweet little flick. I could have gone with one less chase scene and a couple more scifi classic references.

Cross of Iron. Great war flick. 3.5 cigarettes out of 5.

    Winchester 73

Classic, simple and funny. I am not sure why I thought ti would be edgier.

Dan Duryea is one of my favorite actors, but I prefer his sleazeball characters from 1940s crime dramas. Too Late For Tears and Scarlet Street worth checking out if you haven't seen them.

As for the movie I just watched:

Transsiberian. If you're smart enough to get the DVD into the player and make it play, you're probably smart enough to have a pretty good idea of where this one is headed after the first scene. Several people I know enjoyed it, but I thought there was too much wrong with it to recommend.
