It's always worth watching Fred dance if Ginger is dancing with him.

    I love her.

PSA:Gangster Day at The Oscars: Little Ceasar (Edward G. Robinson), Smart Money (Robinson, Cagney), G-Men (Cagney), Bonnie & Clyde (Beatty, Dunaway) and a rare Jack Webb flick Pete Kelly's Blues. Webb is a hip jazz musician. Jack Webb, hip? Yeah, it's worth watching just for that bit.
    Later, lighter fare:
You Can't Take It With You (1938)- Lionel Barrymore, Jean Arthur, Jimmy Stewart
Screwball/slapstick comedy that never gets old.

Good day for old movie buffs.

If I were alive back then, I'd probably have been a Ginger Rogers stalker. BEAUTIFUL, great bod, and probably the most versatile actress in Hollywood. No one was more talented as a dancer, but she's absolutely underrated as an actress, especially a comedy actress. as in Ball of Fire (1942). She had it all and man she was hot.

I'd watch a movie of her reading a book.

She was very good in Bachelor Mother, too. I'll always remember the quote about Ginger Rogers, "I did everything Fred Astaire did, backwards and in high heels."

    400 BLOWS, THE (1959)
I've seen a remake of this one - several in fact - but never the original. I should probably watch this one to get some background info, and some insight into why that girl was such a whore.

She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, one installment in John Ford's Cavalry Trilogy (along with Fort Apache and Rio Grande), is the only one of these three John Wayne films in color, and it has never been released in Blu-Ray. One scene has a cavalry column marching through Monument Valley just ahead of a looming thunderstorm. A film company could wait around for years for such staging of a storm.

He played Little John in the 1922 original Robin Hood with Douglas Fairbanks and Wallace Beery. The one you watched was a remake and he reprised his role.
Alan Hale is also in Destination Tokyo later this month. Sr was a pretty good actor.

PSA: You Can't Take It With You starting now. Rolling a fatty and enjoying this one.

I really need to see Citizen Kane, been meaning to for awhile. Want to see Treasure of the Sierra Madre too. Didn't realize they did a movie for Of Mice and Men, should check that out.
Lot of nostalgia after growing up and seeing Time Machine and 2001: Space Odyssey. A Bridge Over the River Kwai is a movie I can't seem to turn off once I start watching it.

WAT? That film is a classic like The Grapes of Wrath. Burgess Meredith as George and Lon Chaney as Lenny.

I missed the first 1:45:00 of 30 Seconds Over Tokyo. It's World War II Day at The Oscars.
    Today's schedule:
05:30 Destination Tokyo- Cary Grant, John Garfield sneak a sub into Tokyo Bay!
    08:00 Bombardier - Pat O'Brien, Randolph Scott
09:45 Sahara - Humphrey Bogart, Dan Duryea
11:30 They Were Expendable - Robert Montgomery, John Wayne, Donna Reed (Personal favorite)
14:00 Battleground - Van Johnson, John Hodiak, James Whitmore at the Battle of The Bulge
16:00 The Young Lions - Montgomery Clift, Dean Martin, Marlon Brando
19:00 The Best Years of Our Lives - Fredric March, Dana Andrews, Myrna Loy, Virginia Mayo, Teresa Wright and Harold Russell who won 2 Oscars for his performance as Homer Parish, a double amputee. One for Best Supporting Actor and honorary Oscar for "bringing hope and courage to his fellow veterans." Excellent.
22:00 The Story of G.I. Joe - Burgess Meredith, Robert Mitchum The story of Ernie Pyle
    Very strong lineup.

Not going CR here, but there's not many people left that remember what real sacrifice and suffering this country as a whole felt during WWII. A lot of people today want to believe a whitewashed history like "Pearl Harbor" instead of a clear coat version like BYOOL. This was pre-McCarthy and people wanted to make sure everyone understood the cost of war. The fountain scene in BYOOL where Fred and the customer get into a fight over Homer is some of the best writing I've ever seen.

I'm tempted to call this film lighting in a bottle, but that would infer luck. This was a highly crafted masterpiece.

Part of the fun of watching these movies is playing "spot the star and what else were they in". That scene you mentioned, the fight where Fred jumps the counter to support Homer, features...I am almost certain of this....the sheriff from Bonanza. He's the guy who starts the trouble.

One other one I noticed the other week was Much from the Errol Flynn Robin Hood movie....that guy who played Much was also in Mutiny on the Bounty with Clark Gable.

12 O'Clock High is on. Ain't a swinging $#@! here that has what it takes to be part of the 11918th.

I'd put money on Best Ever. Strong contender. Robert Montgomery took command when John Ford fell ill. The majority of the film was made (uncredited) under Montgomery's helm.

Anatomy of a Murder is on next Monday night. It is probably the most realistic trial movie ever created. It is certainly the most accurate representation of criminal trial advocacy ever portrayed on film and it just so happens to be a very good movie with some great plot twists. James Stewart is a little to folksy for my taste, but George C. Scott is outstanding and Lee Remick is very easy on the eyes.

Saw a few so far I've never seen.

The Gunfighter... not too bad, not great.
Gentlemen's Agreement - 1947 winner, pretty good, Peck overacting but all and all pretty ballsy for then.
The Bad Seed - kitschy, but pretty good. Little Girl from Hell serial killer. Now c'mon, who doesn't like that? "Billy wish it in the cornfield" owes its living to this gem.

They Were Expendable has the typical Duke macho stuff in it, it also captures the gripping sadness of men marching off to their death with little or no hope.
"Dad" Knowlton, the shipwright who repairs the PT boats, has a poignant little scene in which he refuses to leave the place he's lived and worked for 40 years, although the Japanese are advancing. Rusty Ryan, John Wayne's character, finally leaves Dad sitting alone on his porch with a rifle in his hands and a jug of moonshine between his knees, as "Red River Valley" plays in the background. How eerily reminiscent of The Grapes of Wrath (1940), which is particularly appropriate because Dad is played by Russell Simpson, whom John Ford directed as Pa Joad in 1940.

My favorite scenes in the movie:
I worked 40 years for this son, if I leave it they will have to carry me out.
Taps his pipe, puts it in his pocket
picks up the jug, puts it between his legs and pushes it back then folds his hands.

Enjoyed both of those Peck films. Also saw him in The Yearling on Sunday. Thought that was good. Filmed on location in Central Florida -- supposedly pretty rare back in those days.

Saw "The Naked Spur" last weekend with Jimmy Stewart. The down-on-his-luck tracker/hunter (Millard Mitchell) that joined him in that film was the marshall in "The Gunslinger" that was on last night.
