Lady in The Lake is pretty damned good for such an experimental film. Robert Montgomery was a great director.

The Grapes of Wrath just started. Based on John Steinbeck's classic (script by Nunnally Johnson), it may be the greatest American story ever told. Solid f'n gold. John Ford gets Henry Fonda, John Carradine, Jane Darwell and Russell Simpson all give the greatest performance of their lives. Nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, and Winner of two, Ford - Best Director and Jane Darwell - Best Supporting Actress. Can't believe The Philadelphia Story beat it. But it's a bittersweet tale. I could watch it 1000 times and not get tired of it.

Steinbeck said it blew him away as far as meeting his expectations from the novel. He also said that nobody could ever and will ever play Tom Joad better than Henry Fonda. But what does he know?

Well, they were trying to GTFO as fast as they could, so they had that going for them.

    Makes sense to me.

    1) Oklahoma is a $#@!hole.
    2) Okies are the dregs of society.
    3) They always get their asses beat on trips to California.
    4) We'll never get rid of them.

I watched that again yesterday. I mentioned earlier in the thread what a masterpiece it is from a purely technical standpoint. I wasn't planning to watch the whole movie but it's just such a joy to watch it sucked me in. I think it's probably the finest piece of American cinema I've seen that was made before Citizen Kane came along the following year and shifted the paradigm.

First, we got a submarine movie.
Second, the movie's name is Up Periscope.
Third, James Garner is talking to an actress about establishing a beachhead.
Fourth, he's also talking to her about Beach maneuvers.

Any movie about a submarine called Up Periscope and talking about beachheads and maneuvers, well, have at it.
