Texas drops a spot in the AP poll to #16. Ok. VA Tech had a big leap from 18 to 15 and Oregon State from 16 to 10.

Duke LOST to FSU and gained a spot. $#@! that bull$#@!.

All that matters is the RPI.

Well we are 29th right now, but as I mentioned in the OK State thread, we have 5 games against the top 10 still and 5 games against teams 20-30 still. So not worried.

    Just win, baby.

Charlie Crème updated the top 16 seeds, we are not in there yet:

UConn, Baylor, MD, SoCar, Miss St, ND, FSU, Oregon St, L'ville, Ohio St., Wash, Stanford, ASU, VT, UCLA, Duke.

I think we can easily pass Duke and VT to get into the top 16.

Rellah Boothe and Chastity Patterson both nominees for McDonalds AA.

Their addition to our roster would give us 9 McDonalds All Americans next year: Brooke, Ariel, Lashann, Hosey, Sutton, Boothe, Patterson, Holmes, White.

Ohio State lost to Michigan State last night. Next week's top 16 might put us in with a win over WVU.

Gail won 102 games in 166 games over 5 seasons.

Karen is in year 5, has 100 wins in 150 games with 13 more conference games + Big 12 tournament + NCAA.

Entering this year's Big 12 play, Karen had 40 Big 12 wins. Which is what Gail finished with. Now has 45.

Yep, Gail did less with more and had arguably weaker pre-conference schedules.

    Gail's non-conf notables:
    2007: Tennessee (L)
    2008: Tennessee (W)
    2009: Tennessee (L), USC (L)
    2010: Stanford (L), Tennessee (W)
    2011: Tennessee (L)

    Karen's non-conf notables:
    2012: Tennessee (L)
    2013: Stanford (L), A&M (W), Tennessee (L)
    2014: Stanford (W), UCLA (W), Tennessee (W), A&M (W)
    2015: Tennessee (W), Miss. St (W), Stanford (W)
    2016: Stanford (L), Miss St. (L), SoCar (L), UConn (L), Tennessee (W)

Let's not forget, while Karen is 0-fer against Baylor, Gail got her clock cleaned by Gary Blair and A&M until her last year. And the Big 12 is tougher now than it was then.

Agreed. Gail was an awful fit at Texas and could never (re)capture the recruiting prowess she had at Duke.

Duke, like Stanford, recruits itself. Texas requires recruiting players, their parents, their HS coaches, their AAU coaches. Gail didn't want to play that game, turned off alumni (many of whom are Texas HS and AAU coaches) and was generally regarded as a bitchy outsider.

That was one of the worst Plonsky hires, not just based on fit, but how much money we handed her to tank us. Karen deserves all the monies for getting us out of that spiral and back to prominence in both recruiting and the NCAA tournament.

Ten point jump in RPI from Sat to Sun (23 to 13). Also 11th in Sagarin

And Duke and Miami both lost today. Opportunities to move up in the rankings with that win over WV

We will finish in the top 16 in RPI even with 8 or so losses. Still multiple games left against fairly high RPI teams.

I was never worried about this team's resume even with a bunch of losses early. Our RPI will be good as long as we don't collapse to end the season.

  • #264
In terms of RPI, we still have:

    @#5 FSU
    @#9 Baylor
    home against #9 Baylor
    @ #11 KSU
    home against #11 KSU
    @#21 OU
    home against #21 OU
    @#26 Tech

We will play several good teams in the Big 12 tourney too. Our schedule is pretty stacked this year. 5 really tough road games remaining. If we can just win 2 or 3 of those it would be huge for RPI.

Agreed. Nice to see us go from 30 to 23 to 13 on this winning streak. Especially as our non conference losses keep winning.

  • #266
That FSU game looms large. If we can pull off a win there, I think our tournament seed will shoot up big time.

  • #267
Joyner Holmes is averaging 11.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game as a true freshman. She certainly needs to improve in some areas, but that's very good production for a true freshman.

Let me go off on a Joyner discussion.

She's good. 11.1/6.9 halfway through her first collegiate season is great. Against our top 25 teams we've played, she's averaging 9.3 ppg and 4.8 rbg. Which, as a freshman, is really good. The 3.3 turnovers / 1.7 apg in those 6 contests is not great. Nor is her 61.9% FT shooting.

But - she does a lot of things well. She cleans up the boards well enough - 36 offensive boards already. She runs the break well. She has tremendous body control when she drives to the bucket.

My only negatives on her right now are 2 things - her jump shot isn't good and she knows it, so she won't shoot it when other teams give it to her and she is missing too many shots at the rim -- she'd be hitting closer to 50% than 43% from the floor if she finishes at least half those layups.

I think she's a phenomenal talent. And I think she's getting better and better. I love having her here. But in order to really utilize her as a stretch 4, which is what many of us hoped for, she has to get that jump shot going.

Slipped a spot to 14 after yesterday's game. But we play RPI #23 tomorrow.

Interested to see if Charlie Crème updates this week and where he has us.

    Top 16!

Texas up to the 4-seed in Lexington. Not the worst road trip. Interesting to note that Stanford can't host, so that does open up a hosting spot for a non-top 16 seed (in this case, #6 A&M will host). I like this seeding - Ohio State is a one-trick team and we played SC very well when we were still figuring things out.

Ok State is last 4 in, WV is last 4 out.

    Baylor (1) in Dallas
    Texas (4) in Lexington
    KSU (4) in Bridgeport
    OU (6) in Bridgeport
    Tech (9) in Stockton
    Ok State (10) in Stockton

By this bracketology, we will have played every #1 seed (5 games total) and a #2 seed.

Just keep us out of UConn's region. Surely, they won't do that to us three years in a row, right?

I hope not. You have a couple reasons -
    1. No one wants to see UConn/Texas before the FF for the third time in 3 postseasons AND for the second time this season
    2. We already played at Mohegan Sun in CT, that would be a bitch move to make us fly up there again this season

If geography is so damn important, Lexington is our best option since they won't put us in Dallas most likely.

Geography doesn't seem to be nearly as important for basketball as their silly rule about conferences not playing each other in the regional rounds. The procedural bumps to keep the Pac-12 teams out of each other's regions is supposedly what screwed us last year. With 4 teams in the Pac and 4 teams in the ACC all in the 2-4 seed range it could result in the same problem.

Without including the band members, it looks like there are well under 1000 fans at this red river shoot out game. Classes are back in session now so there's really no excuse for attendance that low

Considering our starting 5 is 2 seniors, 2 juniors and a freshman and our entire bench rotation is underclassmen or newcomers (2 freshman, 2 sophomores, 2 newcomers) - 7-0 in the Big 12 is a huge accomplishment.

Our starting 5 is so steady but our second unit is getting better. Sutton runs the point really well, giving Brooke rest and/or time at the 2 to keep her fresh. The twins are still rusty, but we are seeing improvements every game. No surprise VPL ate Audrey-Anne's lunch yesterday, VPL is one of the most experienced post players in the Big 12. I love Underwood off the bench as an offensive sparkplug and Hosey on the defensive end.

This team really has the tenacity and fortitude to start off Big 12 play with 10 or 11 consecutive wins before KState/Baylor. Enjoy this while we can - that KState/@Baylor/KU/@FSU/@OU/Baylor stretch is going to hurt. And either show the country that we are a force to be reckoned with (2/3 seed) or we still have work to do (4/5 seed). That stretch will also decide whether we are the 2 or 3 seed in the Big 12 tournament.

The first "Top 16 reveal" will take place Monday during the Miss St. - SC game. The committee decided top 16 should be revealed (in order) instead of top 10.

The second will take place during the L'ville-ND game on 2/6

The third will take place on 2/20 during Maryland-Ohio State (followed by Baylor @ Texas).

Baylor "only" won by 26 over ISU last night in Waco.

Baylor's three point shooting sucked $#@! (2-11) and they had 6 more turnovers than ISU. But Kalani Brown, Nina Davis and Kadijja Cave went 17-21 in the paint (their 4/5 game), hence, the big win (48.3% shooting overall).

Either it was an off shooting night or Karen and co. will be watching this tape religiously for weeks (Alexis Jones 1-12, Alexis Prince 1-8, Kirsty Wallace 2-6). Baylor's guards were piss last night.

Few teams in Big 12 play have both the size/experience on the interior (Lang) and an athletic PF who can guard Nina Davis (Holmes) like we do.

K-State only won by 11 over TCU at home.

Weird box score. BU won that game because they went to the line 26 times. They nearly got outrebounded.

If we can keep pace in rebounding and hit shots and not turn it over...

What worries me about the game in Norman is it falls between our game at FSU and our game at Baylor. But at least FSU is a Mon and OU is not until Saturday.

    12. Texas: After a tough start against a challenging nonconference schedule, Texas is onto something. Winners of 12 in a row, the Longhorns are a good bet to be hosting NCAA tournament games. Bigger possibilities exist with at least two meetings with Baylor still to come.

Still holding at #12. Texas A&M fell out of the poll after entering it last week. bwahahahahahahahahaha. That is directed at all you buffons who thought we should have hired Gary Blair.

Still holding at #12. Texas A&M fell out of the poll after entering it last week. bwahahahahahahahahaha. That is directed at all you buffons who thought we should have hired Gary Blair.
Need KSU and WV to stay in the rankings. Really makes our resume look good. Even though the computers see the Big 12 as the second best conference.

ND only #8 after losing to unranked Tennessee who turned around and lost to Auburn, what a joke. ND should be out of the top 10.

Vic Schaefer was a big reason for Blair's success at A&M.

Interestingly enough, A&M plays Miss State on Sunday.

Would Vic go back to A&M when Blair retires?

He loses Dillingham and Okorie this year, Viviens and Roshunda Jones next year (and his daughter will graduate).

McCowan is only a soph, but he's only got 1 top 100 player signed for 2017.

The two best forwards in the Big 12 won POW and FOW this week, Nina Davis (POW) and Joyner Holmes (FOW).

    FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Joyner Holmes, Texas, G/F, Cedar Hill, Texas
    · Holmes averaged a double-double with 16.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in leading Texas to wins over No. 20 Oklahoma and at Texas Tech.
    · Also averaged 1.5 blocks while shooting .500 (13-of-26) from the field and .700 (7-of-10) from the charity stripe.
    · Weekly averages were well above her season averages of 11.7 ppg and 7.5 rpg.
    · Charted a double-double with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds in the 86-68 win against Oklahoma.
    · It was the first 20-10 performance of her career. She also blocked two shots and shot 57 percent from the field in 34 minutes of action.
    · Had eight of her 20 points in the fourth quarter against Oklahoma, helping the Longhorns break open a close game (two-point game with 4:41 left) and win by 18 points.
    · Registered her second consecutive double-double with 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds in 24 minutes in a 77-57 win at Texas Tech.
    · With the two double-doubles, now has four during her rookie campaign.
This Joyner's second Big 12 FOW award, tied with Nancy Mulkey (OU) and 1 behind Lauren Cox (BU)

Our seeding will obviously come down to how we do against Baylor, @Baylor, KSU, @KSU and FSU. I'm just thankful our ooc schedule and our upcoming schedule allows us some big opportunities to improve upon our seeding.

I hated it at the beginning. It forced a lot of players to mature faster than they were ready.

But looking at it now, the committee has been very happy with it and it has paid off. Better to have 4 losses to 3 of the top 4 seeds than be Maryland (#3 in the polls, the first 3-seed). They got hammered for that dog$#@! schedule.

Crème matched up his top 16 with the committee's reveal from last night.

This puts us as the 3-seed in Stockton with Miss St. and FSU. Which keeps UConn on the other side of the bracket, thank GOD.

That's a very easy subregional that would easily match us up against FSU in the S16.

And from Creme's breakdown of the top 16 reveal:

Texas ahead of Stanford: The Cardinal (17-3) have the better record, a better winning percentage against top-50 teams, and they beat the Longhorns (14-4) by double digits in November. Yet Texas is No. 10 and Stanford is No. 12.

Texas' No. 6-rated schedule (Stanford's was No. 27) is the only apparent measurable advantage, although victories over Tennessee and Oklahoma are the truly big wins on the résumé. The Cardinal might have also taken a hit for the loss to Gonzaga, the second-worst defeat by any team on the list.

Texas' position ahead of Stanford also illustrates what the committee has been saying for years: Head-to-head is one factor but decides nothing by itself. Kentucky is ahead of Arizona State despite a Sun Devils' win in Lexington; Washington lost to Oregon State and Notre Dame, but the Huskies are slotted higher than both; UCLA beat the Beavers but is six spots behind them. This reinforces the committee's process of voting on groups of teams to determine the rankings. Rarely, if ever, does the committee decide on just any two teams at once.

Agreed. 2 wins of those 5 probably keeps us on the 3-seed line. 3 wins probably bumps us into the 2-seed line (especially if one is FSU).
