Yeah it's confusing... Not to mention is all I'm getting are the same 3 weapon skins...

I have received two battlepacks in probably 50 games of TDM, 20 games of Operations and 5 games of War Pigeons. I had a game in TDM where I went 15-2 with 4 heals...no battlepack. Same game my buddy went 1-8 and got a battlepack. We have only played together, and he always ends up with like 400 points to my 1800. I think he has received 10 battlepacks, so he jokes that the game feels bad for him.

Yea, same deal here. Went 20-14 last night and my friend went 8-8, he got a BP. He has received about 5 to my one, doesn't matter if I do better or worse than him. Seems completely random.

It is random, but I've gotten a lot of battlepacks from Operations. Gotten 3 in the past few days. Don't know if they drop at the complete end of the operation or in between deployments.

Battlepacks are random, seem to be 10,ish percent to get them. They are only skins, not new weapons.

Wrecked across all platforms -- it's an EA problem and it's carried over into today as well.

EA's infrastructure sucks $#@! during game launches.

I finally "figured out" this game. Was frustrated at the beginning, felt like I was getting killed WAAAAY too much. And I was.

What I figured out was that I was used to playing COD. Used to getting 5, 6, 8 , 10 kills in a row. Racking up those sweet kill streak perks!

Battlefield isn't COD. (No $#@!, right?). When I started playing it like a WWI pawn soldier charging the hills/bunkers and getting slaughtered, it became more fun for me! I figure if I can get 1-2 kills before I die, I've done my duty.

It's a battle of attrition, just like the real deal.

Yes, this is fairly accurate for the Battlefield franchise. Kill streaks are notoriously hard to come by, so much so that's why they make getting them a medal and/or achievements.

I don't worry about killstreaks in bf.

This is why most people who don't really get into Battlefield give up on it pretty quickly. The gun mechanics are quite different from the more run-and-gun shooters like CoD.

More often than not, living is more valuable than putting yourself out there to try to get a kill. Most of the modes rely on control and being able to have squadmates spawn on you/elimination of vehicles. Once you start to understand this and coordinate with your team better this game plays quite a bit different than something like CoD or Halo typically does.

And then there are times where all you can do is just blindly charge at bunkers or control points and hope that your team overwhelms the other...It can be pretty meat grinder-y.

Decided to pick this game up rather than wait so yeah, our household has spent $130 on it so far between my son and I. Any tips for an older fart that hasn't played a shooter in many years? I'm guessing I should just be a medic so I can hang back and still do some good. My reflexes are definitely not as good as the majority of people I'm seeing so far but I did just get the game

Yeah the kill streak thing is not a big deal in BF. I had a skewed high kill streak because of cobra domination in bf3 and 4. Now I don't care and honestly if I kill 4-5 in a life that is an instant record. Hell even getting 3 kills in a row is an instant record moment.

As to getting better and/or having fun. Don't worry about your k/d. Find something that is fun like building a real medic class with smoke grenades, medic pouches and syringe... Or a suppressive LMG support role. Or just building an assault class with explosives and having fun charging into battle.

Play operations so you have focused combat and you have a better idea about where everyone is coming from.

Battlefield is definitely playable without the fast-twitch reflexes we may have had in younger days.

My keys to the game are:
    1. Understand the game mode you are playing - for instance, I don't play much Team Deathmatch because it is strictly kill based
    2. Utilize your kit to max effectiveness. If you are a medic, appropriately heal people. If you are support, drop ammo and lay down suppressing fire, etc.
    3. Make a habit of spotting enemies which is very helpful to others on your team.
    4. Play the objectives.
    5. Respawn in smart locations.
    6. Work with your squad. Try to use a mic and communicate.
    7. Utilize cover, but keep moving.
    8. Have fun and don't worry about statistics.

I'm mid 40's, but I still enjoy this game because it rewards team play and a smart approach to combat.

    Excellent feedback, everyone. Thanks.

And yeah, I hate people who don't play objectives. That $#@!ing guy laying in the bushes over "A" with no intention of taking it, just waiting for someone to try.
However, they are easy to eventually sneak around to and get since the maps are so large. Or just hop on an airplane and parachute behind them. Fun!

A few other things that weren't mentioned:

    1. Mark the objective if you are squad leader, this will help you rank up faster and helps coordinating your squad. If you are not squad leader, request objective by commo rose > down.
    2. The recon class is actually very easy to play in this game. The weapons can one shot soldiers within their sweet spot. Each gun has a different sweet spot, these are usually from ranges like 60-90 yards or 80-120 yards, etc. This changes depending on the gun.
    3. As recon, use your flare gun to spot soldiers, you can get huge assist points this way.
    4. As recon, your K bullets do double damage to elite soldiers (like the sentry, flamethrower, or tank killer)
    5. As assault you are the strongest class against enemy armor, make sure you use your anti tank stuff!
    6. Grenades and rockets/mines etc can be filled from ammo bags, you just have to wait a while.
    7. Not sure if this is fixed, but if you are low on ammo or health, if you get on a cavalry horse that is sitting around and immediately get off, you will get healed and replenish some of your ammo.
    8. As squad leader you can select objective using the commo rose without having to look at the objective marker.
    9. Recon K bullets can be used to stop tanks repairing. This can be super helpful.
    10. Medic guns are overall probably 3rd hardest to get kills with due to small clips in most guns. When you get one with a larger clip you start downing way more people.
    11. When the enemy armored train comes, it is actually pretty easy to disable the turrets. They respawn pretty quickly but it takes a good chunk out of the overall health and prevents them from firing for a bit from that area. Same is true for the gondolas on the airship. The boat is just hard to deal with because usually its pretty far off coast.
    12. Anti air batteries are amazing against the behemoths.

Snipers are the enemies of fun. Don't be that guy. Sitting in your one spot not helping your team by only getting 3 kills all match, not playing the objectives, and not even being a good spawn beacon.

Also, if you play on PC, and want others to play with you as a squad, let me know and I'll pass you my Discord server info. We play every Monday night, Thursday, and all weekend basically. And when the game is fresh out like now, we play all the other days too.

    I agree 100%.

    For McQuinn:
Recon have a bad rep, for a good reason mostly in BF games. They typically sit back at the edge of the map and do nothing but get like 8 kills throughout the 40 minute game.

With BF1 you have the opportunity to play an aggressive style of recon and be close to the action. Just because you pick Recon doesn't mean you have to be worthless. Get in the action with a closer range weapon, spot all of your enemies and you can contribute a lot. Just don't be afraid of getting your clothes a bit dirty.

How exactly does one "spot" the enemy?

Q on PC. R1 on PS, RB for Xbox.

This is the best thing you can do to make sure your team does well. Makes the sign pop up over the heads of enemies for the next about 5 seconds as long as they are in line of sight. Recon has tools just to target people. In the brush in maps like Argonnes Forest this is HUGE.

Any time you see someone you should be smacking the spot button.

This is an issue for me when I'm not playing with friends. Seems like on PS4 no one says a word. If I join a squad say with a medic and an assault, no one ever helps me out while I'm support. I throw ammo out any time we're taking an objective or lay down fire while they rush. Seems like 90% of the time I get shot, I've got 2 medics no less than 5m away from me, not one $#@!ing revives me. Hard to find a good game where most squads stick together AND work together. Chaps my ass it does.

Yep, this is a constant frustration with the Battlefield series. Just remember that they can hear what you say, so if you are able to offer useful advice your team benefits a lot. This is why PTFO (play the $#@!ing objective) has kind of become a meme. So many people join a conquest game and only care about their K/D but the core community is full of tryhards and we only care about winning.

You're doing it right, don't get discouraged even though it is super easy to. PC is just as bad with people not talking and it is pretty inexcusable to not have a microphone these days.

Picked this up with premium over the weekend and I've been playing operations and it's almost impossible to win when I'm attacking. I find I get pretty lucky if my team makes it past the first part, and if we do we have 1 battalion left. I've been in one match where the attacking team actually won.

A huge problem with most operations games is the lack of medics, or not enough doing their job. You have a fixed number of spawns, revives are critical to winning. Not having good vehicle drivers will also doom you, they are critical to taking some of the objectives.

Also $#@! the alps map, that single entrance bunker on B is impossible to take. I wouldn't even play that map until they fix it. My quick fix would be to make the big turret destructible to make a top down hole to attack through. The zeppelin is worthless on that map, it just floats around while the defending team hides in the bunker spamming grenades out the door.

Attacking requires a basic level of team work. If you notice your team is full of snipers, just back out right there. You have no chance. I find a lack of support classes, so I am usually support. I get a $#@! ton of points just spamming ammo

Also $#@! the alps map, that single entrance bunker on B is impossible to take. I wouldn't even play that map until they fix it. My quick fix would be to make the big turret destructible to make a top down hole to attack through. The zeppelin is worthless on that map, it just floats around while the defending team hides in the bunker spamming grenades out the door.
The alps level is my least favorite too, but there are 2 entrances to B, one is around the side and directly opens up intoi the underground gun. You need somebody with a limpet charge or dynamite to blow the doors when they lock them, and then it's game on.

That's what I was bout to say.

Smoke the door, Tnt the locked door, smoke again, gas & grenades and then bayonet charge in there with a squad. Medic follows last

I played as a medic for about an hour last night, and I hate how people can cancel their respawn so quickly. I'd be running up to someone with my needle out, just to see the icon disappear while futilely poking their cold dead body with my drugs. It's annoying. Why don't they want my heroin? I'm not charging them for it. They should stick around until they get that sweet liquid black tar in their veins just long enough to get killed again by the guy I didn't even bother shooting, cause 100 points is a hundred $#@!in points man.

I did get a lot of points from heals and revives though. I like the range on the medic gun, since I try to play 20-50 yards from the enemy and support squadmates. I need to figure out the inventory system and different guns/kits. I'm still not clear on all of that, and I don't know the maps at all. I also have no $#@!ing clue how to fight a tank while I'm a medic. I mostly just ran from armor.

Oh, I did get 1 kill with the syringe, and it put me in the top 6% of syringe kills in the world, lol. That heroin man, some people just can't handle it.

Yeah, once you blow doors they're done for the rest of the match, so you can just run in next time. The added bonus of limpet charges that's fun is that they don't light up like grenades do, so it's fun to drop them on people, they rarely know what hit them.

I'm guilty of this too, it's a holdover from earlier Battlefield editions. It's rage inducing to die and then have a medic reviving you only to die instantly again because nobody took out the guy shooting at you in the first place.

Yeah my medic reviver build has medic box, syringe and smoke grenades to help me cover my runs out into a street.

Sounds like you're doing it right! haha. Tanks can be imposing. The assault class is really intended to take down armor, but lots of people think they are just the pyew pyew class.

I feel like they should remove the option to be able to skip your revive until the redeploy timer has completed, just so this doesn't happen. I find myself stuck with my pants around my ankles in the open sometimes because I was aggressively running to try to get to a downed teammate.

I'm something like 16-2 on operations and haven't lost since launch day. Full squad with at least 2 medics and you're good to go. You're going to lose at least one objective while defending no matter what so we focus our defense on whichever objective we feel will be hardest to attack. Also avoid 64 man operations servers.

It'd be better if instead of a skip revive, you could "select" DNR or save me and your timer would be based off of that.

If you are a "DNR" player, you get a grey cross with a 5 sec flashing timer. If you're a "save me", you have a min 9 sec but unlimited Red Cross and medics know who they should bother with attempting to revive.

I'll have rounds or long moments of rounds where I do not care about being revived, I just want to respawn elsewhere so I would gladly switch to DNR and get an automatic shorter timer.

I could see where someone would switch to assault to target a specific tank with the intention of switching back to another class after they die and not wanting to be revived. Or maybe like what happened to me last night when I switched to scout so I could counter-snipe this guy that was giving us problems and every time I died some random medic kept reviving me when I didn't want to be scout anymore since it wasn't helping the team.

Or support doesn't throw down ammo, or they all snipe, or they waste the behemoth in the first 1/4 of the match, or the dozens of reasons why I've lost. I mean, I've been playing battlefield since bad company 1, so I'm used to the general $#@!baggery and suck of battlefield players to a certain degree, but for $#@!s sake I can usually win a couple matches attacking, but I haven't won once.

Oh, and yes, $#@! that objective. Can't even bring in tanks cause its in $#@!ing mountains, and planes are useless unless the enemy team goes full retard and just sits on top.

The medic gets a grenade launcher that either literally launches a frag grenade and does like 5 damage to the heavy tank or a high explosive grenade built just for shooting at tanks. You can equip it with a gadget slot.

I've won a bunch in Operations as an attacker, but the key is getting to the second map with 2 battalions left. If not, it's pretty much game over... that and having a team that will coordinate. Two morters on objectives do a great job of getting rid of defenders.

I still have no idea how to play as assault. The guns seem like they suck unless you use a shotgun in a close map.

That's definitely your problem. They didn't balance it properly for 64 player servers.

That's something that I think needs to be taken into consideration when playing any BF game. DICE develops these games with a particular play style in mind. Trying to go against that, like playing hardcore in any of their games, or playing Rush in BF4, is going to produce a less than optimum experience. They put Rush in BF4 because people would have bitched if they didn't but they didn't design the maps with that game mode in mind and never balanced it properly. I can almost guarantee that they designed Operations for 40 player servers.

It goes back to what I was saying about hardcore earlier. 3D spotting is a crucial part of the BF games. The weapons are designed and balanced for a particular damage. When you play HC you throw all of that out and you're not playing the game the way it was intended.

Spotting is really... spotty... in this game. I can clearly see a guy 100 yards away, spamming RB while looking right at him, no marker shows up. Dude behind a wall 25 yards away, and I can spam spots on him all day. 10 points each too :D

Seriously? Guess I'll give the 40 person servers a try.

Personally I find operations mode way more fun on 64 person, but yes it seems heavily stacked against the attackers.

Just wanted to pipe in for any newbies that this is purely his opinion. Not trying to start an argument or anything, but there are plenty of people who do prefer hardcore over softcore, myself and the people I play with included. Spotting works just fine in hardcore mode, it marks them on your minimap, without putting a giant dorrito (nacho cheese for enemy and cool ranch for friendlies) on your screen and it doesn't show you kill cams, which protects against ghost-calling, and gun damage is balanced better since it doesn't take an entire magazine to kill somebody (THAT is unbalanced, imo)
