    Liverpool 2016-2017: aKloppalypse Now

1st full offseason with Klopp begins today!

Below are bios on two of our confirmed signings:

    Joel Matip
    24 year old 6'4'' centerback
Free Transfer from Schalke, valued at €18m on transfermarkt
    295 total appearances 34 goals 19 assists

    Strengths

Matip's height is an obvious advantage. He towers over most of his opponents, and that aerial dominance should help him adapt to life in the Premier League.

Additionally, he has particularly rangy strides which make up for any issues over pace. When he's in flow, he's as quick as most centre-forwards. He doesn't look particularly powerful, but he's strong in the tackle.

This season, Matip has been one of Schalke's strongest performers.

He's cut down on mistakes and turned in performances when it mattered. He's regularly the man on the end of crosses into the Schalke box and along with goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann are the two stalwarts of Andre Breitenreiter's defensive unit.

    Weaknesses

Despite his improvements mentally, he can still be caught sleeping on the odd occasion - it's a bit of a problem when you're centre-back will go on rash charges up the pitch.

What will be encouraging to Liverpool fans is that there are no standout weaknesses. He's a good footballer on top of his solid defensive traits.

    Marko Grujic

20 year old 6'3'' center medfielder signed from Red Star Belgrade for £5.1m

    Strengths and style of play

Tall, rangy, comfortable on the ball and with a good range of passing, Grujic has been dubbed the 'new Matic' back in his homeland because of his likeness in both appearance and position to Chelsea defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic.

However, the 19-year-old has the skills and shooting ability to be utilised further forward, as he has been at times this season.

It is that adaptability which has made Grujic one of Europe's most sought-after teenagers and Serbia-based journalist Vlastimir Stevanovic says of the player: "If I had to compare Marko Grujic to anyone in terms of style of playing, I'd compare him to Steven Gerrard.

He can play offensively, but he would also be great at playing a deeper role, much like [Paul] Pogba, which is actually how he plays at Red Star.

"He is very tall and strong so he's great at aerial duels. He has excellent vision, a great passing game and he possesses great game intelligence."

But Zeljko Paunovic, who coached Serbia U20s to World Cup glory in New Zealand earlier this year, believes Grujic is actually more effective when played either as a winger or in the No 10 role.

"He is a good lad with great mentality," he said. "He's not a born leader, but he's not afraid to play big games.

"I think he is much more than a regular playmaker or attacking midfielder. He would be better suited as a winger or behind the striker.

"I think that he should play on the flanks and closer to goal."

Hoping we're not reduced to bargain bin shopping in the transfer window due to our lack of European qualification. Need to make some noise to finish in the Top 4 next year - a lot of holes that can be filled.

Well we'll certainly have ample opportunity to focus on the Premiership this season. Anyone else coming to Pasadena on July 27th? If so, let's hit up some bars before/after.

No but there's not a Europa play-in to worry about so outside of Euros and Olympics, the squad should be decent. The Traveling Kop is already sold out.

For some reason just seeing this thread has numbed the pain of yesterday. Hope springs eternal.

Here's my assessment of the current squad with an eye towards next year: Sell, Loan, Squad, 1st Team, Reserve

    Keepers:
    Migs - Squad
    Ward - Loan

    Fullbacks:
    Moreno - Squad
    Clyne - 1st Team
    Randall - Sell
    Smith - Sell
Flanno - Squad (mainly because he's scouse)

    Centerbacks:

    Sakho - 1st Team
    Matip - 1st Team
    Llovren - Squad
    Gomez - Squad
    Lucas - Squad
    Kolo - release
    Ilori - Sell

    CenterMids:

    Can - 1st Team
    Henderson - Squad
    Allen - Squad
    Grujic - Squad
    Chiravelli - Reserve
    Stuart - Sell

    AMFs:

    Coutinho - 1st Team
    Lallana - Squad
    Firmino - 1st Team
    Milner - Squad
    Markovitz - Squad
    Ibe - Loan
    Ojo - Squad

    Forwards:

    Sturridge - 1st Team
    Origi - Squad
    Ings - Squad
    Benteke - Sell

So my Sells are Randall (bag of peanuts), Smith (£75K), Ilori (£3M), Stuart (£375K), Benteke (£22.5M) = ~ £25M (all figures from Transfer Market)

    Here's the shopping list:

1st Team Goalie - £6M (Horn or Karius)
    1st Team LB (Jonas Hector) - £6M
    1st Team CenterMid (Mahmoud Dahoud) - £9M
Squad CenterMid (Piotr Zielinski) - £5.25M
    1st Team AMF (Gotze) - £26.25M
    Squad (4th Choice) Striker - £5M

Even if we assume we pay +25% of market value (being English), that's only a net outlay of £46M (£71M In - £25M Out). Seems reasonable given our healthy finances (even without CL).

    Thoughts?

I agree with most of your thoughts. You forgot Skrtel, Balotelli, Wisdom, Teixeira, Alberto and Bogdan.

If it's me I spend big at 3 positions. Keeper, Defensive Mid and a goal scoring AM. I don't think either of the keepers you mentioned move Mignolet out of the 1st team but I could be wrong. In my opinion what this team needs more than anything is a $#@!ing destroyer of a DM that can put his foot on the ball and take control of the game. I think Can is more naturally a CM and bringing in a competent DM would allow him to move forward at will. It would also screen out back 4 so much better than the current double pivot iterations. Finally, give me someone that can score goals for fun in the attacking midfield. After that go buy a few developmental youths that are cheap.

I agree for sure on the goal scoring winger. However, it seems we're going for Gotze (giving us 4 #10s by my reckoning). Hope Lazar is up for it.

Thanks for the reminder on the others. They may serve to knock down the net spend a bit (all are Sells IMO)

I'd keep Kolo over Levia in that role. I thought he was one of our stronger players yesterday(yeah yeah I know). Seems to be very good for the locker room.

I imagine we're still a year or so out on Brooks Lennon but wouldn't be surprised to see him make the tour. Any word on Allan Rodrigues de Souza?

With Sakho's return in the air and not likely until October I think Gomez will make it difficult to move him out. Seems funy to have our Captain listed as squad. Who takes that role over?

Full agreement here. We need a Xabi type DM who can control the midfield. I was hoping we'd get someone like Granit Xhaka, but it looks like the Gunners are hot on him.
Nainggolan? Pjanic? Perhaps they are a bit too high...

This allows Karius to dominate the penalty area, and the German possesses an authority over his defensive line at Mainz, along with a booming vocal presence that allows him to command the 18-yard box.

Karius made 81 successful claims in the Bundesliga in 2015/16, completing 99 percent of his attempted catches, compared to Simon Mignolet‘s 74 claims, or 82 percent of his attempts, highlighting his quality.
This is huge, in my opinion.

Rumors that Koln have identified their LB replacement for Jonas Hector and Chilwell has informed Leicester he wants to leave.

Something appears to be happening at that position.

you guys already have a really big squad, and now will have much few matches. Aren't you going to have to shed more players?

Admittedly, I am no expert on the ins and out of how EPL teams are managed.

With Sakho's return in the air and not likely until October I think Gomez will make it difficult to move him out. Seems funy to have our Captain listed as squad. Who takes that role over?
Allan is apparently being loaded again because of work permit issues.

Yeah, saw Allan will be off this summer. Also if there are any of you on the west coast, the U21s are playing Sacremento and you can see a couple of the guys, including Lennon.

Michael Beale and his Liverpool U21s squad have landed in Sacramento ahead of their end-of-season tour in the United States.

After a long journey across the Atlantic, the young Reds touched down on Thursday evening at 11pm local time as they prepare for the double-header against Sacramento Republic FC on May 21 and 25 respectively.

Recent first-team graduates Cameron Brannagan, Connor Randall and Kevin Stewart will also be joining the squad for the fixtures, flying out later today to join up with Beale’s side.

    Liverpool U21s squad

George, Vigouroux, Whelan, Jones, Brewitt, Maguire, Randall, Masterson, Hart, Brimmer, Stewart, Brannagan, Madger Gomes, Virtue, Phillips, Kane, Ejaria, Kent, Canos, Toni Gomes, Lennon.

Loris Karius undergoes medical ahead of Liverpool move

I have questions about a 22-year old keeper, assuming he's coming in to be be the #1, but I also trust Klopp. Now let's get Dahoud and Chillwell, and throw the kitchen sink at Goetze.

This seems like a lot of roster moves. Do we really roll over that many players each year? I don't remember that many changes.

We need to get rid of a lot of guys but if you look at most of those names they're not folks who have any impact. We could get rid of almost every name on that list and most wouldn't notice.

There's that, but also without Europe, it makes sense to bring the wage bill down this season.

"Karius made 81 successful claims in the Bundesliga in 2015/16 completing 99% of his attempted catches. Simon Mignolet made 74 claims on only 82%."

Hopefully less of Mignolet the flightless bird flapping at crosses this season.

Mario Götze Cuts Ties with Agent as Conflicting Rumours Fly

Rumours are flying today about Mario Götze’s new agent, the pay packet he’s been offered by Liverpool, and whether he’s had a change of heart about staying at Bayern Munich.

With Liverpool nearing the completion of a deal to bring Loris Karius to Anfield, rumours are flying that Mario Götze might not be far behind. Unless he’s had a change of heart and now wants to stay at Bayern Munich to fight for his future at Germany’s biggest club.

After reports emerged that Liverpool had offered to make Götze their highest paid player, offering the 23-year-old £150k per week to make the switch to the Premier League, the English press began to talk about his move to Anfield being something of a foregone conclusion. In Germany, though, the story is rather different.

In his homeland, Bild are claiming that Götze has had a change of heart and will instead remain at Bayern—though even that is further complicated by suggestions he will continue to hold off on signing a new deal. His current contract has only a year left on it, meaning Bayern risk losing him next summer on a free.

"I look forward to the new season in Munich and will do everything to compete during my first training sessions under Carlo Ancelotti," was Götze’s brief statement when pressed on his future today, which either signals—as Bild believe—that he’s staying at Bayern or is simply the player covering his bases.

For every player like Alex Teixeira or Dejan Lovren who openly talks about desiring a move there’s a player like Roberto Firmino or Philippe Coutinho who has played down the possibility of changing clubs right until the deal is done in order to protect against the chance of the transfer falling through.

And whatever is going to happen with Götze, there appear to be some added complications to sort through, with news that the player has parted was with Volker Struth and the Sport Total agency, which is being reported as a surprise move by the German media, one with an uncertain impact on his future.

The main uncertainty stems from so far unconfirmed reports that Götze is moving to the ROGON sports management group, who represent Roberto Firmino and Loris Karius. In Firmino’s case, ROGON helped arrange his move to Liverpool in a difficult deal involving the complications of third-party ownership.

If Götze has chosen ROGON, then, it’s a move that will fuel speculation that he in fact could be on his way to Liverpool. Unless, that is, he really has had a change of heart and is now set on proving his worth to Bayern's incoming manager.

Mamadou Sakho’s suspension for failed drugs test to be revealed next week

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho should discover the length of his final suspension next week, following his failed drugs test in March.

The 26-year-old has not played for the Reds since scoring in the 4-0 win over Everton on 20th April, after it emerged he had tested positive for a type of banned substance following the Reds’ 1-1 draw at Man United in the Europa League.

Sakho didn’t request UEFA to test the B sample he provided and was subsequently provisionally suspended for 30 days by European football’s governing body.

Having missed the rest of Liverpool’s season, and been excluded from France’s Euro 2016 squad, Sakho has been awaiting the outcome of UEFA’s investigation.

According to French outlet L’Equipe, the case will be examined next week. His proviisal 30-day suspension ends on Saturday.

It was initially expected that last Thursday would be the day that UEFA’s Disciplinary Committee gave their verdict, but that has since changed.

The Frenchman’s ban could be anything from six months to two years. The outcome having an impact on Jurgen Klopp‘s summer transfer plans.

Reports on Monday suggest Klopp is targeting another centre-back to contest with Dejan Lovren and new signing Joel Matip.

Next week’s decision is a career-defining one for Sakho, who is expected to plead ignorance after taking a fat burning supplement.

Mahmoud Dahoud Liverpool’s “first choice” midfield target – Report

Liverpool are pushing for a deal to Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud, while lining up Piotr Zielinski as an alternative, according to a reliable report on Monday.

A move to sign Zielinski was said to be in the offing last week, with reports from Poland suggesting a deal would be announced ahead of the Europa League final on Wednesday.

But five days on, there has been little in terms of movement in Jurgen Klopp‘s bid to add to his midfield ranks.

According to the Express‘ Paul Joyce, a move for Udinese midfielder Zielinski is Klopp’s second-choice option, behind Gladbach’s box-to-box talent Dahoud.

Dahoud was first linked with a move to Anfield back in April, with the Reds believed to have joined Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund in the race to sign the 20-year-old.

Reportedly valued at around £20 million, Dahoud would be a major signing for the Reds this summer, and with Klopp clearly looking to bolster his midfield, this would be a statement of intent.

The Reds manager is said to be “hoping to plunder his Germany connections” to persuade Dahoud to make the move from Borussia-Park, though whether Gladbach would agree to a deal remains to be seen.

The Bundesliga side, who secured Champions League football with a fourth-placed finish in 2015/16, have already seen midfielder Havard Nordtveit leave for West Ham United on a free transfer.

And with Granit Xhaka poised to join Arsenal in a big-money move in the coming days, Dahoud’s departure would prompt a midfield revamp at Gladbach.

This seems unlikely, given their sporting director Max Eberl’s claim that they “have no need to sell [Dahoud].” So a move for Zielinski seems to be more feasible at this stage.

Zielinski would certainly welcome a move to Merseyside, having spoken about the Reds’ interest on a number of occasions this year.

“It would be great to play alongside Coutinho,” he said in March.

“I am sure we could be a good duo on the pitch. We’ll see what will happen.”

The 22-year-old could be forced to wait a little longer, with Klopp’s focus currently on his Syrian-born counterpart, but either midfielder would be a great addition to the Liverpool squad.

Loris Karius Arrives in Liverpool to Complete £4.7M Move

Liverpool are set to complete the signing of goalkeeper Loris Karius from FSV Mainz this week for a bargain £4.7M fee.

FSV Mainz’ 22-year-old goalkeeper Loris Karius has arrived in Liverpool today to complete negotiations and undergo a medical ahead of his move to Anfield, which is widely expected to be officially completed within the next two days.

Reports earlier today spread quickly from journalists with ties to Liverpool Football Club, with a flurry of early reports that Karius was on his way. In the hours since, the goalkeeper’s imminent arrival has been confirmed by sources with ties to the club, including the Liverpool Echo.

Despite some early confusion about what Karius would cost, there seems agreement now that Liverpool will pay only £4.7M for the promising young goalkeeper. There had been conflicting reports when rumours of Liverpool moving for him that it might be £6M or £8M

Regardless, it would have been something of a bargain for one of Germany’s brightest young goalkeeping prospects, and that it appears that the final fee will be less than £5M makes for something of a coup for Liverpool—not entirely unlike their capture of Emre Can for less than £10M.

Karius spent two-and-a-half seasons with Manchester City in his youth career, which means he misses the cut-off for counting as homegrown by just six months. He started 36 games for FSV Mainz last year, conceding 44 goals and recording ten clean sheets along the way.

His 2.1 saves per goal allowed puts Karius up there with England’s best last season and is a significant improvement on Simon Mignolet’s 1.27 saves per goal allowed—second-worst in the Premier League, with only Aston Villa’s Brad Guzan worse amongst starting goalkeepers.

I believe the ruling about fan misconduct (not just ours but other clubs as well) got pushed to July

If Goetze really has decided to stay with Bayern, I think that could be a good thing for us. As much as I would love to have a truly world class player come to LFC, he really is just an improved version of 2 players we already have (Coutino and Lallana). We'd be much better off throwing £20M at Leroy Sane who would address our #1 need: a speedy goal threat from the wing.

Beyond this, my #1 hope is that the rumblings about us being in for Jonathan Tah are true. Kid could be truly special. Also like the links to Dahoud. Dahoud plus Can in a double pivot sounds fantastic.

Based on links and my realistic plotting, here's my starting XI:

    ------------Karius------------
    Clyne---Matip----Lovren----Hector
    -------Dahoud-----Can-----------
    Sane-----Firmino------Coutino
    --------Studge/Origi-----------

United and LFC both fined £40k for chants. Lulz.

Also, £20m might get you 40% of Leroy Sane. There are teams lined up to pay £40m+
