Yeah. regs are sometimes written with so much gray area that no matter how hard you try to get a legal definition, a game warden could find a reason to cite you.Makes no sense to me, if it's a law, it should be defined.

Interesting. Thanks for the replies. It shouldn't be quite so hard to make an honest effort at staying within the law.

So....if I were a guided [dove/bird] hunting veteran, but lease hunter rookie....what are some things I need to know to not be an $#@! hunter? This is a shared lease with other hunters who I do not know

Just practice good gun safety and good common sense, and you'll be fine. Don't crowd your neighbor, don't block a road / walking path, park your vehicle in a concealed spot, clean up after yourself, and don't pepper anybody.

May take an orange vest or hat in the truck and throw it on if it's crowded.

Know life long hunters that have been badly peppered and one straight up shot in the last few years. Since then, I started throwing my hat on if someone I haven't hunted with several times is within 100yrd or so. I've found I feel a lot safer walking out to retrieve a bird with blaze orange on my head.

Thanks. My $#@! brother actually is getting married on opening weekend, so no hunting for me then...

AFA hunting regs, are a buddy and I allowed to clean the game at the lease at the end of the hunt? If so, are we required to keep some part for proof of species or something? The only reason I bring this up is b/c the wife has a thing with me cleaning game at home and tossing it in the trash bins. And, yes, the carcass will end up in the trash anyways (vs. dumping it at the lease) but I'll just slip it in (phrasing) on my way in the house.

No proof of sex required for dove. Clean them in camp. For deer, you can quarter in camp, but can't completely process.

For those of you running dogs, http://www.snakebreaker.com/ will be at Best Retrievers in Paige, TX this Saturday. Here's the form to fill out https://form.jotform.com/Rk3dbest/Do...stration_Form_ https://www.facebook.com/events/1658699257782181/ I took Tuff last year and will take him again this year just because he's so hard headed. Best Retrievers is a first class spot.

    2016-2017 Hunting Thread

So, these guys were all hanging out together in front of my house this morning:

Right now, they are following the "bros before hoes" rule. In 3 months or so, when the rut starts . . . that rule will flip.

Got a couple boxes of Monarch 1oz - 7.5 for $4.99 at Academy to try out, hopefully before the season starts and while they're still on sale. Box claims 1310fps.

    Anyone used them?

Bought 200 acres out in dryden,tx area(meyers canyon ranch) last year. Have not been out there yet though. Was planning on setting up a feeder/cam for the season. Head back out there after the season and check the cam after the season. Has anyone hunted that area? If so, what can you tell me about it?

There's some decent bucks out in the Dryden area. It's pretty dry out there and the deer population seems to follow how the rainfall goes. We hunted mule deer a little further west, near Sanderson.

I believe the terrain is pretty flat with rolling hills. There is a draw on the property as well, but how much of a draw is to be seen.

You don't see many black bear or mountain lions out there but they do move through coming out of Mexico. The blue scale quail are pretty cool. They're tough as $#@! and spook easily. It's weird with muleys and whitetail out there. You might see only whitetail on one place and only muleys on another just a few miles away.

Just pics from the realtor. Got it real cheap! Couldn't pass it up because that's one thing that we are not making more of. Also, if I don't like it...I shouldn't have a problem selling it.

Someone told a story once about an old man who got peppered and then called his shot on the other guy afterward. That was priceless. "So where do you want it?"

Whitetail population is getting pretty bad in some communities.

My parents live out in marble falls. Went to see them one day and saw roughly 8 deer in a $#@!ing parking lot. I did not see one deer all season at my feeder behind the house, here in leander. Talk about pissing ya off.

For the safety of the neighborhood, I would like to volunteer to take a couple of these guys in early December. Once the rut starts their are gonna be a lot of accidents while these guys are chasing tail around town. Think about the children!

Why would you wait to hunt the south zone in Houston? The south zone season doesn't start for almost another month. Drive North of IH10 and hunt this Thursday.

The shotgun was his great grandfather's, and is over 50 years old. The boots were his dad's, and are 27 years old. The truck is his dad's, and is 17 years old (and he drove it back to the gate). I'm sure there are things more "Texas" than this, but I'm hard-pressed to think of any.

Not a whole lot of birds tonight, but he shot well, and we picked up good grub on the way home.

anybody ever seen or heard of a dwarf whitetail deer? I don't know if dwarf is the right term, maybe miniature. Or ever seen a fawn with horns?

    So....yeah....

Sometimes, that divot is a bit stiffer and deeper than you thought...and for your 17 yr old axle...well, the strain was more than she could bear.

    Furk.

This ain't gonna be cheap. Nevermind the cost of the tow, and the call to Pescado to come give us a lift home ("Pescadooooo!")

On the menu for the game is shicken wings (spicy and honey BBQ), some pizza, and I'm frying up some gator and dove nuggets....

And practicing my arguments against the wife who is surely going to use this event to argue that now I need to get rid of the truck. Which is my means of transport to hunt, fish, and tow the smoker. So, I gots ta stand strong. Fried critter should help me do that.

You are correct. While I'm getting it fixed...along with the busted door...and the worn out window switch...and the other busted door...I MAY get it inspected.

I really do need to have it up and running soon. Hard to take my little Hyundai out to the pond to duck hunt.

Ouch. We almost ran off into a 3' drop where that guy stopped mowing behind the tank. Now I know why he stopped.

Was actually in the main road cut on Moore. Was heading to the back, and just saw the drop a bit too late. Gotta take that one slow.

We had a great time this morning. No birds, but Heath brought his 6 yr old twins and gave them a brand new Red Ryder and some beer cans. No eyes or wheels were lost.

Welp . . . that's gonna be a 'spensive day in the field. $1300 to fix the damage (busted ball joint, control arm, and axle, all new shocks), and add another $600 to do the same to the other side, because it's worn out/shot as well. So, with tow and all . . . a solid $2k job. BUT, it's either that, or spend the money on another hunting and fishing vehicle.

The wife will be less than amused. I'll just point to all of her expensive purses and tell her "this is my version of those."
