'Long' John Daly Signs On To Play New Driver Like None You've Seen In Golf
John Daly has a funky new driver to pair with his outlandish outfits on the golf course.
Never shy about going against the norm in the golf world, Daly for the next several seasons will be playing a unique new driver with vertical grooves on the club face -- the only model of its kind on the market. The two-time major champion and one of the sport's most prodigious drivers signed a multiyear deal with Vertical Groove Golf, LLC, and will serve as a global ambassador for the company, wearing the company's logo on his shirt collar and on his golf bag as he plays on the PGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions and other professional tournaments.
The nontraditional grooves on the Vertical Groove Driver are designed to reduce side spin at impact and help improve accuracy. Testing performed by the company found the technology leads to 40% straighter ball flight on average and Daly says he's been hitting more fairways since putting the driver in his bag.
Daly won the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1995 British Open, but may be best known for his unconventional personality (particularly in the traditional world of golf) and his long drives. "Long" John Daly led the PGA Tour in driving distance 11 times from 1991 through 2002 and was the first golfer to average more than 300 yards off the tee in a season. He was also the longest driver on the senior tour in his debut season in 2016, averaging 303.6 yards off the tee, but ranked just 74th in accuracy (hitting 57% of fairways).
Jeff Barry, the CEO of Vertical Groove Golf, said Daly's use of the USGA conforming vertical groove driver is "strong validation that this club performs at the highest level." The suggested retail price of the 450cc driver, which comes in 9.5, 10.5 and 12 degree lofts and is 45.75 inches in length, is $399.99.
"This is an exciting time for Vertical Groove Golf, and itís only fitting that John Daly leads our stable of endorsees," Barry added.
