    1. LHP Jose Quintana, Chicago White Sox

    2017 stats: 5.2 WAR, 13-12, 3.20 ERA, 3.56 FIP, 1.16 WHIP

    Contract status: 2017: $7 million; 2018: $8.5 million; 2019: $10.5 million (team option); 2020: $11.5 million (team option).

Best time to trade him for maximum value: At the trade deadline on July 31.

The White Sox have been dangling him this offseason, and they’re asking for a huge haul in return -- which they should. However, because they haven’t been able to make a deal at this point, and haven’t had an offer that’s close to their asking price, they might be better off waiting to trade Quintana at the July trade deadline, when there would be more of a sense of urgency and competition from contending teams to land him.

Don’t get me wrong, if the Sox get the right offer now they should go ahead and do a deal. However, if they can’t get what they want now, holding him for the first half of the year makes sense. If he has a great first half, he’ll still have 3 ˝ years of control left, at salaries well less than market value, which only enhances his value. There is always a shortage of quality starting pitchers available at the trade deadline and teams tend to pay more then, when they know they’re in contention and just two months from the postseason. You only have to look at the returns for pitchers such as David Price, Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller over the past two trade deadlines to understand that’s when your best offers in trades normally come in.

Realistic trade value: The White Sox should expect to receive a package somewhere between what they got from the Boston Red Sox in the Chris Sale trade and their return from the Washington Nationals in the Adam Eaton deal. In the Sale deal, they got two elite prospects in second baseman Yoan Moncada and right-handed pitcher Michael Kopech as well as a good prospect in Luis Alexander Basabe and a marginal prospect in Victor Diaz. In the Eaton trade with the Nationals, they received two elite prospects in Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez and a good prospect in Dane Dunning. So basically they should be getting two elite prospects and either one good prospect or two marginal prospects in return.

Best fits and specific possible trade packages: The White Sox match up best with the Houston Astros, Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees in a Quintana deal, because all three teams are contenders with strong needs for young controllable starting pitchers and the three have some of the strongest farm systems in the sport, which any suitor needs to match up with the White Sox’s demands.

Here is a break-down of something close to what kind of packages the White Sox are looking for in return for Quintana, keeping in mind many of these packages are asking too much and some aren’t enough, but the actual trade value is somewhere in this ballpark, based on what they got for Sale and Eaton earlier this offseason.

    Houston Astros

Package No. 1: Francis Martes, Joe Musgrove and A.J. Reed

Package No. 2: Francis Martes, David Paulino and Teoscar Hernandez

Package No. 3: Alex Bregman straight-up. (Not happening.)

Package No. 4: Kyle Tucker, Forrest Whitley and Garrett Stubbs

Package No. 5: David Paulino, Forrest Whitely and Franklin Perez
    I'd do 2, 4 and 5.

I'd think long and hard about 3 I think, but probably say no. I don't do 1 at all. That guts our system of a guy that should be league average this year and all 3 guys have an all star ceiling, and they all have a floor of making it to the show and contributing some value.

I believe in reality. I believe that it is really $#@!ing hard to be a MLB player. I don't think a young player is going to hit a baseball better because his locker is next to an older player who inspires him to try harder. That bull$#@! is rooted in the romanticized mythology of the sport.

Now? Of course not. That's his ceiling though. He won the golden spikes award for best collegiate player and was minor league player of the year. That kind of pedigree says all star ceiling. Most guys don't hit their ceiling but he has that kind of upside.

I'm sure we're going to have endure another 80+ games of him in the lineup to find out. Can't wait.

If he has 80+ games in the lineup, it means he is hitting. We have other options if he does not hit.

Hard to adjust to MLB pitching unless you rack up PAs against it. Mashing against AAA pitching isn't going to do him or the franchise much good.

Maybe they want him mashing against a steady diet of meat to build his confidence. See what I did there?

the spring training competition between and him and white will be pretty damn interesting. i think only one will make the roster.

you're right, he needs MLB at bats and don't think he'll get them on this team unless he's shows something in spring training and then carries that over into the regular season

Like to see Reed mash. His swing is so slow it's Jason lane like. Lil shep has been watching games on dvr every day since first of December.

Neither of them have a spot right now on the 25 man.

McCann, Gattis, Gurriel, Altuve, Bregman, Correa, Gonazlez, Aoki, Springer, Red$#@!, Marisnick, and Beltran are the 12 for sures. Since Hinch loves the 13 man pitching staff, I would say their shot is slim and none, and even if they did go with a 13 players, they would have to beat out Hernandez, who is more of a need than 2 guys that can play no defensive position at all.

It wouldn't surprise me if Jake doesn't make the team. Dude needs to get his $#@! together at the plate

Perhaps, but Jake is probably the best defensive CF in baseball. Those guys win more games than bad hitters that are $#@!ty on defense.

UZR/150 since '14, which is the only true way to measure him since he doesn't play enough to qualify.

He's very good, but saying he's the best is just $#@!ing laughable.

Or DRS if you prefer, but obviously this skews towards innings played.

I know Fanfest already mentioned, but not sure how many of you are memorabilia/autograph seekers but a few things coming up on that with the Stros.

Tomorrow Dierker/Wynn/JR Richard will be at Fitterman sports Baybrook Mall to sign in the afternoon. $25 each or $60 for all three.
    http://fitermansports.com/astros-signing-11417.html

Then TriStar will be back in Feb 10-12. So far Bregman will be there and Bagwell will be if he gets into the HOF. Doc Gooden too if you want to count him lol. I'd guess a few of the younger minor league guys may be added the closer we get because they tend to have a few there for free/real cheap autographs. (Also Phi Slama Jama reunion with Hakeem, Drexler, etc. Earl/Ricky and others.....3putt you can go get that Butterbean autograph you've always wanted) Tristar is pricey though.

How is Hernandez more of a need with 5 OF already on your list (counting Beltran) plus Gurriel and Gonzalez, who have both played in LF (esp if you have White/Reed for 1st)? If Hinch carries 13, I'd think Hernandez would be well down the list in likelihood for that spot.

    Good deal

The Astros and outfielder Jake Marisnick settled on a one-year deal worth $1.1 million to avoid arbitration, per source.

He plays defense at all 3 OF spots better than all but two players, Springer and Marisnick. He can be used as a PR, White and Reed can not. White and Reed are clearly behind 5 players already on this list as well. Shoot for all we know, they might decide to carry 3 catchers and then none of Hernandez, White, or Reed are even in consideration.

I think Jake makes the team as the defensive backup OF

Aside from injury, the only hope for Reed/White/etc is if they decide to keep 13 position players, which is unlikely considering the pitching logjam and that Pea$#@!/Chapman are out of options. Now if Reed really mashed in ST I could see them trading/releasing Aoki to move Gurriel to LF. White and Moran have an outside shot to make the roster as the backup corner IF and 13th position player. But for now I consider this the opening day roster:

    CF Springer
    3B Bregman
    2B Altuve
    SS Correa
    RF Red$#@!
    DH Beltran
    C McCann
    1B Gurriel
    LF Aoki
    Bench: Gattis, Marwin, Marisnick

Rotation: Keuchel, McCullers, McHugh, Morton, Musgrove
Bullpen: Fiers, Pea$#@!, Devenski, Chapman, Sipp, Harris, Gregerson, Giles

Biggest potential changes would be Musgrove going to AAA, Fiers to the rotation, with Feliz/Hoyt/etc taking the 25th spot.

Not too shabby....although a part of me wishes Luhnow would go crazy and sign Trumbo...locks down 1b and keeps him away from others.

I don't see Feliz (or Musgrove) in AAA. Someone will get dealt to make room if necessary.

I like how the rotation is in alphabetical order.
