i would guess most FA 3B don't want to change teams to become 1B. but i guess we could put yuli at 1B and bergman in LF

i don't think anyone is "truly unavailable," but you wouldn't like what you'd have to give up to get him.

So we are probably losing Castro, Rasmus and Valbuena. Any trade for bat talk needs to start with lefty's. (Same can be said for pitchers.)

I am perfectly fine with Castro coming back as a back up catcher. As for Rasmus, I know his bat stinks, but he is an elite defensive player and we will see a huge drop in the outfield if we send Yuli, Kemp or T Hernandez out there. How is Josh Red$#@! defensively? I ask because he appears to be the only FA lefty hitting outfielder that would be an upgrade over Colby.

If we can talk him into playing first then yeah, go for it. I don't think the FO has given up on Reed yet though so it's probably not gonna happen.

OF ought to be the position player priority.

Sign a veteran starting pitcher from the scrap heap for next to nothing and hope AJ Reed is ready to hit. Let Castro walk. Sign a JAG to play OF. Hope Keuchel and LMJ are good to go.

That's what the plan is I assume, I'd be surprised if they did more than that. I find the hypo stuff to be more fun during the long and bitter offseason.

Fowler and Jansen would be nice additions, although I still wouldn't trust Fowler in CF. I would take Rasmus back too if the money is reasonable.

Don't underestimate defensive value. While the cubs can hit plenty, it's their defense that separates them. Plus, the dude was hitting very well until he had that freak ear thing.

Gonna write down what I thought were the positives of the season.
    • Ditching GoGo
    • Mother$#@! Gattis as our new starting pitcher. He's a keeper.
    • Valbuena before injury
    • McCullers before injury
    • Bregman once he started to get it
    • Yuli. He can stay.
    • The Holy Triumvirate of Correa, Altuve and Springer
    • Things McHugh Said. Also seeing him bat was phenomenal. 10/10, would watch McHugh Bunt Again

    i seriously $#@!ing love mchugh

Can't believe people think this is a feasible/good idea.

Some of y'alls trade scenarios, free agent desires, and team structuring ideas are head-scratchers, to put it politely.

Lets hear yours... I'm curious. Not like we have anything else topical to talk about for at least a month and a half until winter meetings start.

My first idea is to reflect on how poor Gattis is as a defensive catcher, and how badly it turned out in Atlanta when they tried him as a full time catcher with a younger version.

Then, I'd consider how many variables there are and come to the conclusion that it's pointless to speculate. You're free to and yes that's the point of this board, but, you asked for my ideas, and that's the basic idea.

  • #172
Gattis is fine at catcher. He's probably best limited to ~90 games behind the plate but he's not a bad defender when he's back there; it's more about his health.

I'd have more posts in the season thread than Scraps and putt combined, so be careful what you wish for.

I thought Gattis behind the plate would be a disaster that we wanted no part of, but really it's turned out alright. He posted a +2 DRS in 445 innings at C this year, and his pitch framing was actually decent too. StatCorner has him at +0.75 calls/game and 4.8 RAA.

For comparison, Castro put up a -2 DRS, 0.92 calls/game, and 12.8 RAA

They just need a catcher in the 9th inning to catch Giles sliders

Seriously Giles should not come close to the 9th inning on a consistent basis.

If Crane is willing to go to $120M in 2017 payroll, and all the mlbtr estimates hold true, and Luhnow is able to get Sale without giving up major league assets (say Martes, Paulino, K Tucker, and Fisher), here's the roster:

    CF Springer
    3B Bregman
    2B Altuve
    SS Correa
    RF Red$#@! ($40M/3yrs)
    1B Gurriel
    C Gattis/Castro ($35M/3yrs)
    DH White/Reed
    LF Marisnick/Kemp
    UT Marwin

Rotation: Sale, Keuchel, McHugh, McCullers, Musgrove
Bullpen: Devenski, Feliz, Sipp, Harris, Gregerson, Giles, Chapman ($90M/5yrs)

That roster projects to 50+ fWAR.

Serious question. Would the Astros have a problem pursuing Chapman due to domestic abuse allegations? He was suspended 30 games for it.

is archer a free agent this year? we really need to find a way to bolster our starting pitching. i have confidence in luhnow that he can continue to stock the farm. id be all up for signing archer(if he is a fa) and trading for sale. i dont think we can rely on lmj to stay healthy a full season and keuchel is a gamble.

Official 2016-17 Houston Astros Offseason Thread

Finally getting around to watching Ken Burns baseball doc. And for some reason (probably learning about John McGraw) I was struck with a revelation. We need a leader on the team. An official leader, yes a Captain And that man has to be Jose Altuve.

It's not the answer to all our problems, but it can't hurt. And there can be no other choice.

Edit-Just saw on WIKI that Enos Cabell in 84-85 has been our only official Captain.

Maybe but I doubt it. He's good enough and enough time has passed that other teams won't give it much thought and it's not like the Astros have some higher standard to uphold. Also, Houston may be a better spot for Chapman given the presence of other prominent Cubans on the roster and in the system (Gurriel, etc.).

With Uncle Drayton, probably no way Chapman would get any consideration. Crane probably doesn't give a $#@!, or if he does, cares only that Chapman has already served his time for it.

    My wish list:

    Pitcher with lots of wins

    High RBI hitter

Guys who don't clog the basepaths

    Grit

Get those 4 things and the Astros are playing in October.
