Have at it, kids.
Have at it, kids.
Not a terrible season. Not a good one. Crane needs to open up his wallet some and get us a bat and a pitcher. Need Keuchel to bounce back. Need some young pitchers to step forward. Need Reed to drop 30 pounds.
Lets get Edwin Encarnacion
Reed not being a disgusting fat body might help too. Got to get Marwin down to a couple hundred ab's
Really it's all about are LMJ and keuchel good pitchers for 150-200 innings each next year. If they are we are tits. If not we suck.
And I'm resigning from making the game thread next season. Big duck you to all the haters.
If we could have back about half of our gagged-away wins, we'd still be playing. I'm obviously hoping we've at least sorted out which relievers should be pitching with a lead and which shouldn't. As for the starting arms, everyone knows we need health and a return to "normalcy" with LMJ and Dallas, respectively. Beyond there, just need something halfway consistent from Colin and for the young guys to build confidence. On the offensive front, Encarnacion certainly would help. I look for a big full season out of Yulieski and Bregman. But until further notice, I'll continue to expect nothing from those hitters who showed nothing this year.
slamming buds!! /all caps
gonna be a long 6 months
Luhnow announced the entire coaching staff will be back in 2017
Need to wait for the trade deadline to add frontline pitching.
As much as I'd like to see an upgrade in the lineup, the real immediate concern is Catcher. Gattis is fine in his current role. Re-signing Castro may be the only real move. Encarnacion is going to get a deal that will be bad the last 2-3 years. He's 34 in January and will probably rake for the next couple years, but we'd likely have to sign him for 5. It's not my money, so if they feel this is a good play, I'm for it. But if it means they're pinching pennies in 3 years when Correa is 24, Bregman is 25, and Springer and Altuve are 29, I'm not for it.
Luhnow also believes 2017 will be a bounce back season for Sipp. Fml
I haven't read the story in a while but they were behind this prediction partially because of Mark Appel, Brady Aiken and Jacob Nix.
I don't expect much in the way of starting pitching help this offseason, unless it's a blockbuster for Sale. In which case, Bregman would be gone. I do like the idea of adding Encarnacion and hoping that Musgrove matures into a reliable MOR guy.
Barring some massive trade, the whole season rests on the health and effectiveness of Keuchel and LMJ, it's as simple as that.
No slow start and learning how to be at least average against the Rangers would be nice next season.
I'm holding out for better cluster luck.
Only half joking...
Lol at yall letting a Rangers fan start this thread and then actually post in it.
I just figured he was some random Astros fan. Didn't recognize his screen name
Posted this in the slamming buds thread before realizing the offseason thread had been started:
Highlights from Hinch and Luhnow end-of-season press conference today. Some of this what they actually said, some is editorial by the beat writers and myself.
Disappointed with how season ended but happy that organization is at a point where just having a winning record isn't good enough. Hinch seemed pissed. Luhnow was his unflappable robotic self.
All coaches being brought back for 2017 ($#@!!)
Team should have plenty of room in the budget to make moves this offseason. (Combination of money coming off the books + ownership willing to increase payroll ceiling)
Unlikely that any of the guys hitting FA (Valbuena, Rasmus, Fister, Castro) are brought back. Seems maybe 50/50 on picking up Neshek's option ($6.5M, 500K buyout.)
They obviously want to acquire a starting pitcher, but consider the FA market very weak in regards to SP. A costly trade may be the only option here unless we decide to just grab another journeyman and hope the rest of the staff gets healthy/rebounds. They expect a "Corey Kluber" rebound from Keuchel.
They think there's a lot more talent in the position player market than general consensus, so expect to see us heavily involved.
Need to replace 2/3 of the outfield. Jake and Teoscar still viewed as bench guys, so need starters at LF and RF, if Springer moves to CF.
1B obviously another area of major need, as well as a 2nd catcher to pair with Gattis.
Lefty reliever also on the shopping list.
if OP really is a rangers fan then $#@! this thread.

he Houston Astros were quiet at this year's trade deadline, but that likely won't be the case this offseason.
Rumor CentralAt the team's year-end press conference on Monday, general manager Jeff Luhnow said team owner Jim Crane is open to an "increase in payroll'" and the organization is "going to have the resources to go out and sign some players," according to tweets from Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle.
ESPN's Jim Bowden writes that the Astros "will be open to free-agent options and are willing to listen to trade offers on all of their top prospects to make deals for the players that fit their positional needs" for an outfielder, a catcher and a starting pitcher after falling short of expectations in 2016. Houston made the postseason as a wild-card in 2015 and was expected to contend for the AL West title this season, but was eliminated from the AL wild-card race in the final week of the season.
Bowden writes the Astros will part ways with impending free agent Colby Rasmus and are likely to look outside the organization for an impact bat in the outfield. They'll also be searching for a catcher who can provide more offense. Bowden identifies free agents Matt Wieters and Wilson Ramos as possibilities, but also mentions the possibility of a trade with the New York Yankees for Brian McCann.
Houston will be in the market for starting pitching as well, looking for another hurler after down years from Lance McCullers and Dallas Keuchel, who both battled injuries this season. That was a major reason why the Astros didn't make the playoffs, Bowden writes.
1. Add a starting pitcher
2. Add an outfielder
3. Add a catcher
4. Figure out first base
The Astros’ clear priority is their desire to add a starting pitcher, outfielder and catcher. They will be open to free-agent options and are willing to listen to trade offers on all of their top prospects to make deals for the players that fit their positional needs.
The unfortunate injuries to (and/or down years for) both Dallas Keuchel and Lance McCullers Jr. had a lot to do why the Astros didn’t make it back to October baseball. However, it also made it clear to them that a starting pitcher will become their top priority this offseason. The Astros will say goodbye to impending free agent Colby Rasmus, and although they could move either Yulieski Gurriel or Alex Bregman to left, it’s more likely they will go outside the organization if they can get a significant impact bat. The Astros also could use an upgrade in center field.
The Astros will also focus this offseason on trying to get a better offensive catcher, with free agents Matt Wieters and Wilson Ramos being possibilities, along with a possible trade for Brian McCann if the Yankees are willing to eat significant dollars on the remainder of his contract.
The Astros also have to figure out what they’re going to do at first base from a long list of internal candidates that include Gurriel, A.J. Reed, Tyler White and Luis Valbuena.
There is some work to do for the Astros this winter, but with a few shrewd moves they can easily find themselves back to October baseball next fall.
Yeah, that Edwin guy.
Maybe we can get Britton? Seems like the O's don't want him anymore.
Is there any hope the Astros can get Sale?
What do you think it would take?
Any thoughts on Michael Saunders if the price is right? He batted .253 with 24 homers this year but seems to be injury prone.
One of the more intriguing position players hitting FA to me is Justin Turner. Having trouble seeing how he'd fit with us though.
Pro: Only 31 and has finally developed some power to go along with solid contact skills. 43 HR the past 2 seasons while hitting ~.285.
Con: Primarily plays positions where we're set.
I like him, but having trouble figuring out a spot for him in the infield unless you move him to 1B.
Ian Desmond and Mark Trumbo are both set to hit the market. Outside of Cespedes those have to be the next two ranked outfielders.
i would reeeeeeally like to get Edwin, but don't know if that's going to happen. not so high on trumbo though, but i guess i could be talked into.
I could handle Trumbo, but not in the OF. He's a butcher.
Putting Trumbo in a corner OF spot would be the defensive downgrade of the century.

Id put Trumbo in left in a heartbeat even with him being a retard. That way you keep Marisnick and let him handle CF/left center and bat 9th
whomever we sign, he needs to play LF.
1st - el yuli / white
2nd - altuve
ss - correa
3rd - bregman
rf - springer
cf - marisnick? / maybe a FA moving marisnick to the #4 of
lf - FA, not colby rasmus
C - gattis / FA pick up
DH - FA ? / gattis / el yuli
I hope Marisnick isn't an everyday starter next year.
per media reports, other teams were asking for bregman and musgrove this past august in trade deals. no way in hell im giving up either one. hopefully those two are the backbone of a damn good team for many years to come
TOR pitcher will require proven MLB talent and then some, not just high level prospects.
If the price is right for Trumbo he seems like a solid option given our current roster. If he can be moved around from outfield to first base and is a solid DH then I'd be happy with him. Of course that is if we don't sign another legit bat.
