Just thinking of comedies in comparison to Seinfeld, two more modern ones that played in some way off of the Seinfeld "no learning no hugs" and somewhat sociopathic nature of the Seinfeld characters - It's Always Sunny (the latter, the characters in this are unequivocally bad people except maybe Charlie) and Parks and Rec, which I think was somewhat purposeful in doing a modern comedy but completely against the no hugs no learning thing and with characters who are basically all inherently good. Not comparing these in stature to Seinfeld, but it's interesting to think of them in terms of how they took what Seinfeld was and went further or in the opposite direction. Also obviously Curb, which is Seinfeld topics but with Larry David being a more somewhat prototypical schlemiel.

Always Sunny is literally just a raunchier Seinfeld. And it's fantastic.

Sunny used a lot more physical humor though, not that it's a bad thing, but it definitely relies on that. I think Sunny also blurs the character traits a lot more, and you see a lot more dynamic roles from their cast. Seinfeld was rather rigid with its characters, which makes it a more consistent show to watch. When George and Elaine's luck in life switched, it was a longterm change as opposed to a single episode.

The woman who saw George's shrinkage is the same actress that played the porno star who married Buck in "Boogie Nights".

Sorry, not the one that saw it, the one who was his date for the weekend. Everyone saw her breasts but George.

  • #158
George: Well, how good a look did you get?

    Jerry: Well what'd you mean?

George: Well, if she was a criminal and you had to describe her to a police sketch artist...

Jerry: They'd pick her up in about ten minutes.

George: Great, great. So anytime you want you can just visualize her
    naked.

    Jerry: I guess that's true...

Larry David is a genius. The Seinfeld reunion they did within Season 7 (?) of Curb Your Enthusiasm was brilliant. I loved how when David was selling the idea to Jason Alexander, Alexander said something like "well, it could make up for the weak finale" and David got all defensive about "THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE FINALE!".

One of the best things on Curb was the running gag of the tension between Jason Alexander and Larry about George... how Alexander always talked about how George was a "moron" etc., which of corse offended Larry since George was based on him...

The best thing about the Seinfeld finale was that they ended the series (the dramatic part, not the standup) with the same bit that they opened the first scene of the pilot with in the (very different looking) cafe, about the second button on George's shirt being too high.

"Haven't we had this conversation before?"

I need to binge rewatch Curb. It's on Amazon Prime if I'm not mistaken.

I think Seinfeld is a strong contender for GOAT but the more I reflect on both shows, the more I think CYE might be better precisely because of meta-stuff like this. Seinfeld had some elements of it but CYE took it to another level.

    Also, Palestinian Chicken.

And 10 Year Anniversary gift. Carpool lane. The scene where they're at the country club trying to finish breakfast quickly so they can beat the slow golfer's group to the first tee, and Larry's cousin orders something extra. Just about any scene involving a Susie rant. Susie's orgasm in the rental car. I had to hit the pause button because I couldn't stop laughing long enough to watch the show.

I loved the series and I suppose I'm one of the few who loved the finale--especially the ending with them sitting all together in a jail cell.

I think pound for pound, the best ep is the one where George concocts the roommate switch plan.

That's like discovering plutonium, by accident!

Yeah the montage set over music of them trying to come up with the plan, ending with George leaving and then opening the door, "I've got it!!!!" was fantastic.

Then Jerry talking about how he couldn't be "orgy guy" because he'd have to grow a mustache, get "orgy friends", start wearing robes and install "weird-o lighting".... lol

Can you imagine the SJW reaction to stuff like that if it aired today as the most watched sitcom?

    Kramerica Industries, man, good stuff.

"Far as I can tell, your entire enterprise is little more than a solitary man with a messy apartment which may or may not contain a chicken."

"You remember my corporation, Kramerica Industries?"
    "Alright."
"Well, apparently NYU is very enthusiastic about their students getting some real world corporate experience."
"But you only provide fantasy world corporate experience."

"You know, Darren, if you had told me twenty-five years ago that some day I'd be standing here about to solve the world's energy problems, I would've said you were crazy. Now let's push this giant ball of oil out this window."

And one of my all time favorites is Jerry's delivery here:

Kramer: Jerry, it’s not for people, it’s for oil tankers.

    Jerry: (sarcastically) I know!

(Jerry tries to shove Kramer out the door)

-Well, I have to say this seems capricious and arbitrary.

    -Your fly is open

No idea why these lines crack me up so much.

Well, he's not functioning the way he normally does. He seems
depressed. He's lost his appetite. He's even curtailed his autoerotic
activities. And we think this is directly related to the altercation he had
    with you the other day.

What about my feelings? Don't my feelings count for anything? Only the poor monkey's important. Everything has to be done for the monkey.

You are nothing but a piece of crap.

    A piece of crap.

    I find you extremely ugly.

You emit a foul and unpleasant odor.

    I loath you.
