    2017 Texas Softball

Kick it off with an official schedule!

    http://www.texassports.com/schedule....&path=softball

    Highlights:

Texas Classic ft. Minnesota (2 games on the 10th and 11th of Feb.)
Texas Invitational ft. South Carolina (2 games on the 17th and 18th of Feb.)
Mary Nutter ft. ND, Missouri, Tennessee, ASU, Washington
    3/1 Texas State
    3-game set @ Arizona March 3-5
    @ UCLA 3/12
    @ Clark's alma mater CSF 3/17 and 18 (DH)
    Open Big 12 play @ OSU 3/24-26
    UH (DH) 4/2
    4/5 @ Texas State
    OU 4/7-9
    @ KU 4/28-30
    Baylor 5/5-7 (@ Baylor 5/5, @ Texas 5/6-7)

And then Big 12 tournament in OKC

This is actually a legit schedule. 15 tournament teams and 5 who made it to the Supers or better.

Texas State, Tennessee and Long Beach State made the Field of 64.

OK State, South Carolina, Baylor, CSF, Minny, ASU and ND all made Regional Finals.

Missouri, Washington, Arizona were Super Regional participants.

UCLA and OU were in the WCWs and OU won it all.

    Thanks for posting !

Looks like they will be in Cali for Spring Break 3/12-3/18 (UCLA, Loyola Marymount, LBS, and CSF). Should be good for RPI.

Do you think OkSt and Tech will continue to improve ? Need a strong conference.

Pretty cool that we're able to host not 1, but 2 pretty big tournaments to start the year here at home. Hopefully Erica Wright is ready by February so her and TD can alternate starts

We've always hosted decent tournament but it's been a while since we had a GOOD name come in (Tennessee in 2012 and Kentucky in 2014). Minnesota is a good name - hell, I want Jess McAllister when we finally fire Clark.

McNeese also made the NCAA. So 16 teams who made the field (28 games of 53).

Not that I think we would be worried about this, but pretty cool for some lesser programs in our conference (ISU, Tech, sometimes KU/OSU):

    http://www.flosoftball.com/video/101...vealed-in-2017

Dave King, CEO for Triple Crown Sports revealed secondary college post-season play in 2017. Similar to NIT basketball, teams that don't make the NCAA tournament have the option to play in post season.

48 teams will be invited to the tournament with 16 regionals in a double elimination format.
Also check out who posted that. Hey Chez!

Can't imagine that pays very well. Seems like a position where she still could/should have been able to do both.

    Congrats to Marlee !

Quite a success story. At Senior Day it was announced she was the first member of her family to attend college.

Not positive, but I was told last year that Blaire is an elementary school teacher in Del Valle and a volunteer coach with their high school team.

AUSTIN, Texas – Former Texas softball outfielder Marlee Gabaldon has been announced as the new head varsity softball coach at St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Austin.

"I am so thankful for the opportunity to coach at SAS," Gabaldon said. "I hope the players are as excited to get the season started as I am, and I can't wait to get started in a few short weeks."

A 2015 grad of the Forty Acres, Gabaldon saw action in 131 career games with 71 starts for the Longhorns from 2012-15. After spending her first three seasons serving primarily as a pinch-hitting option off the bench, the Odessa, Texas, native evolved into the team's every day starting right fielder as a senior. During the 2015 campaign, she started all 55 possible contests in helping the Longhorns to a berth in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional and a 38-17 overall record, hitting a career-best .275 to go along with single-season bests in runs (18), hits (41), doubles (five) and RBIs (18).

Off the field, Gabaldon earned her degree in applied learning and development with a minor in social work while picking up selections to both the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll and the University of Texas Athletic Director's Honor Roll.

"We are excited to welcome Marlee Gabaldon to the St. Andrew's family," Director of Athletics Jeff McCrary said. "Her impressive athletic pedigree, coupled with her coaching work in the softball community will be invaluable tools as we continue to grow our softball program."

Her body has had over a year to recover. If she's still not ready, then we have a long way to go in rehab medical science.

And a long season in store.

I think she's back. I hope she's back. I don't want to go through that Tenn-ASU-Washington stretch without her. Or 3 games at Arizona. Or 3 games vs. OU.

Still odd to me that Brooke Bolinger is not listed on roster, bc she supposedly transferred in and has to sit. WBB has Jatarie White on the roster, who is sitting out due to transfer rules. Though Brooke does come up in the UT Directory.

Interesting. Can't recall an early high school enrollee for softball. She is definitely needed to help at catcher. Bolinger eligible according to this article?

Georgetown High School catcher Taylor Ellsworth will skip her senior season with the Eagle and begin her college career at Texas this spring.

Ellsworth was one of two mid-term enrollees for the Longhorns that are immediately eligible to play this season. The other is Brooke Bolinger, a left-handed pitcher that transferred from the University of Nevada.

Both practiced with the team on the first day of practice Wednesday.

Ellsworth was a three-year standout at Georgetown High School where she had a career batting average of .550 with 21 home runs and 107 RBIs. She played club softball for Austin’s Texas Blaze. She was a two-time all-state player.

Bolinger, who’s from Yucaipa, Calif., posted a 16-6 record with a 2.81 earned run average, 18 complete games and 118 strikeouts during her freshman season at Nevada.

Wow, that is weird. But I'll take it. This gives us depth at the C position behind Leahy, allowing Hathaway more time as DP/OF.

Official release for Bolinger and Ellsworth. Both now on the roster.

College Sports Madness preview: #25 Texas (that's fair)

Last year Texas made their 12th consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, going to the Lafayette Regional where they were eliminated after losses to host team Louisiana, 9-1, and Texas A&M, 9-3, ending their season. The team decided to make a coaching change after the season ended replacing long time hitting coach Corrie Hill with former Oklahoma Sooner hitting coach Tripp McKay. Last year the team had some problems winning road games. While they were 24-5 playing at Red & Charline McCombs Field, on the road they could only manage a losing 7-8 record. Texas will be without power hitting outfielder Lindsey Stephens this year, who put up some impressive offensive numbers last season, along with infielder Stephanie Ceo and catcher Erin Shireman, who will also be missed for their solid play.

    2016: 38-16, 10-7

    2016 Postseason: NCAA

    Coach: Connie Clark

    Key Departed Players:

Lindsey Stephens, OF, .407 BA, 15 HR, 46 RBI

Stephanie Ceo, IF, .273 BA, 0 HR, 12 RBI

    Erin Shireman, C/IF, .235 BA, 1 HR, 7 RBI

    Key Returning Players:

    Tiarra Davis, P/IF, 1.97 ERA, 213.0 IP, 186 SO

Paige von Sprecken, P, 2.91 ERA, 98.2 IP, 61 SO

    Celina Felix, 3B/SS, .358 BA, 8 HR, 39 RBI

Stephanie Wong, OF, .232 BA, 1 HR, 14 RBI

    Reagan Hathaway, OF/C, .309 BA, 5 HR, 30 RBI

    Projection:

Even though Texas star player Lindsey Stephens is gone due to graduation, the team is returning five everyday starters that combined provided the majority of the teams hitting power for last season. Also back are starting pitchers Tiarra Davis and Paige von Sprecken. Time will tell if the team's freshmen phenom pitcher Erica Wright, who was forced to redshirt the entire 2016 season because of an injury, can come back and show the same form she had before the injury. Texas is set up to have a good season with their strong returning pitching staff and core of hitters, who also have some speed on the bases. They also have a strong group of freshmen coming in that should push the veteran players and add to the team’s available talent pool. Look for Texas to make its 13th consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament this season.

    Projected Postseason: NCAA Softball Tournament

Yeah I noticed that today, kinda wondered if anyone had news here about that.

I'd definitely say I don't have real high expectations for this year considering what still feels like the usual CC letdown around here, but I like the idea of the lineup shaken up a bit from what it was the last 2 years or so. That senior class last year (except for Stephens) just didn't deliver the way they should have. Time for the next group.

  • #25
On a side note, Wow!! Didn't see Connie cutting Corrie loose coming. I like it though, this team needed some kind of change there with our hitting getting anemic at various stages down the stretch. I don't know if our winning ways are going to be back until Connie herself is cut loose, but this McKay guy certainly has gotten some good offense out of his squad so ... gotta be worth something.

New rules to increase speed of play

    http://www.ncaa.com/news/softball/ar...oftball-season

6 conferences at the mound per team
    90 seconds between innings
No more defensive huddles at the mound after outs

    Rule 1 is my favorite.

Restricting the number of charged conferences, either offensive or defensive, to six per team. Teams may use two conferences per inning (one offensive and one defensive). Each team is allowed one conference, offensive or defensive, for each extra inning. The team representative(s) or player(s) who initiates any additional charged offensive or defensive conference will be immediately ejected. The current rules allow each team one offensive and one defensive conference per inning (i.e., 14 allowable charged conferences per team per seven-inning game, which does not include pitching changes).
So you get one defensive conference (either initiated by coach or a player) + pitching change per half inning.

    Awesome.

Yes, sorry. It will now count as your defensive conference. Previously, it did not count against your limit.

Wait. Are y'all saying you can only change pitchers once per inning?

That's not gonna work. If you pull a starter and the reliever gets shelled, you should be able to replace her.

14 allowable charged conferences per team per seven-inning game, which does not include pitching changes
Yeah, I'm thinking you still get unlimited pitching changes. You just can't go out there & talk about it 13 times with each P anymore.

Good changes in my opinion. Never really felt the games were too long or drug on. This certainly won't hurt though. Will be interesting to see if they give a little leeway on the ejections early in the season as the coaches and players get used to the changes.

Season is drawing near. Looking forward to it.

OU is the UNANIMOUS #1 in the preseason NFCA/USA Today poll. Texas has 17 votes, putting it at #28

If you're looking for some of our opponents:

    #1 OU (x3)
    #8 UCLA
    #10 Arizona (x3)
    #13 Washington
    #15 Tennessee
    #16 Minnesota (x2)
    #17 Missouri
    #21 Baylor (x3)
    #22 Notre Dame

    RV: Ok State (x3)
    RV: South Carolina
    RV: Cal State Fullerton
    RV: Arizona State

53 games - 16 against top 25 squads, 22 against top 25/teams receiving notes. Salty.

Does the last name Oakes ring a bell to anyone as one of our former Ps? Was told the Aledo coach's sister was a good P for us at some point, that's her last name. No idea if it's married or maiden though.

Don't recall an Oakes, probably married name. See if you can find hometown of Heather.

Tried to do some googling. Can't find much of a bio on Heather Oakes to see where she played.

Especially if Oakes is her married name, it's going to be a hard find.

    Three weekends in the books:

11-5 with wins over Notre Dame, Tennessee, Missouri and losses to Washington (11-2), Minnesota twice (14-0), ASU (12-3), South Carolina 12-2)
    Team ERA just under 3
    Hitting around .317 or so
    Fielding .957

Pitching wise, this team will go as far as Davis goes. Erica is still working her way back in (good starts/bad starts), Paige is her usual self, Brooke looks like a relief pitcher at best and Clark is just there.

Offensively, the players that make us go are Hanzel, Alcozer, Hathaway, Tunning and Wong. Felix has been just nonexistent (hitting less than .200) but it's been offset by Tunning having a 2015-type year, Hanzel being the rock steady #9 hitter, Wong constantly getting on base and Hathaway/Alcozer's power.

We have 11 more contests before conference play: Texas State (home), 3 @ Arizona, UTSA (home), @ UCLA, @ LMU, @ LBSU, DH @ CSF, McNeese State (home). It shouldn't be much to ask for 8-3 in that stretch. Just 1/4 against UCLA or Arizona would be nice, 2-2 would be a miracle.

20-8 going into Big 12 play would make me feel okay about this team.

11-5 is better than I thought we would be. Clean up our fielding and we could be pretty good.

11-5 is good for our situation (EW trying to get healthy, trying to find replacements for Stephens/Ceo/Shireman, a new hitting coach). And our opponent's winning % is 49-7 (.875). No shame in losing to those opponents. We made up for it with a win over 13-2 Tennessee. Even 7-5 Missouri (W) has a win over #7 Washington and a win over #15 James Madison and 6-8 ND (W) has wins over #14 Michigan, #12 Georgia and #5 OU.

Not ranked. Apparently gained nothing by beating Mizz and Tennessee.

10 SEC teams in top 25. F off.

We moved up in the RV category (we're #26 in one poll). I think we really needed an ASU or UW win to put us into the poll. We will have our chances with Arizona and UCLA.

The SEC has a lot of good teams and we beat two of them. Right now we are 2-1 against them and that ain't bad.

I will concede Auburn, Florida, A&M (ugh), Alabama, LSU, Tennessee and Georgia.

Mizzou? 7-5 but ranked on the back of their one win against Washington at MNC or they would have fallen out of the rankings
Kentucky? One win against UCLA 2 weeks ago and 0-3 against top 25 teams otherwise
Ole Miss? LOL NO. Unranked to #25 because they beat #23 USF twice? We had 2 better wins at MNC.

Texas should be in Ole Miss or Missouri's spot. Baylor will be exposed big time at Judi Garman (ASU, Michigan, Washington, UCLA in a 3 day stretch).

Davis Big 12 Pitcher of the Week

    PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Tiarra Davis, Texas, Sr., Henderson, Texas
•The senior helped lead UT at the prestigious Mary Nutter Classic by tossing a pair of complete games during victories over No. 20/22 Missouri and No. 15/13 Tennessee for the first Longhorn win over a top-15 team since 2015.
•Limited Missouri to just one earned run while striking out a season-high seven batters.
•Notched an RBI single during UT’s six-run, sixth-inning outburst to break away from the Tigers.
•Pitched a complete-game to hand the No. 15/13 Volunteers their second loss of the season, allowing one earned run on five hits.
Bolded, btw - blech. $#@! you Clark.

This is a lengthy article but a good summary including info about other B12 teams. The bolded part is an error, however. Excerpts below:

    http://www.hookem.com/2017/03/02/dia...texas-offense/

Wednesday night, Osterman’s star pupil — Texas State junior Randi Rupp, the Sun Belt’s preseason pitcher of the year — also finally found out what it’s like to win at McCombs. She shut down Texas’ high-powered offense for a 2-1 victory.

In the past, when Rupp has discussed her recruiting, there always seemed to be a chip on her shoulder when it came to the Longhorns, who passed on her in favor of Huntington’s Erica Wright in 2014. Rupp and Wright were club teammates.

Maybe that’s why these victories over Texas could be just a little more sweet to her. They likely are for the coach Rupp calls “Coach O” too
Texas got its first big: Heading into the Mary Nutter, the Longhorns were 0-3 against teams that were either ranked in the NFCA/USA Today Top 25 poll or receiving votes. That changed when they beat Notre Dame (receiving votes) 4-3 and No. 20 Missouri, 10-3. They also handed No. 15 Tennessee its first loss of the season with a 4-2 win.

The offense comes alive: Through 17 games, Texas already has three players with 10 or more home runs — Tunning (12), freshman Jade Gorterez (10) and sophomore Bekah Alcozer, who leads the team with 15. The team slugging percentage of .455 tops the Big 12.

Mickenzi Krpec: The senior infielder continues to lead UT in hitting with a .382 batting average despite going hitless in her last eight at-bats. She had a monster game against Tennessee, though, going 2 for 3 with a double and a home run. She also leads the team with six doubles.
