I'd spun it a few times since it came out, but it's really sinking it's claws into me. She did a great interview on WTF with Marc Maron and I realized that she grew up 3 hours away from me and the place she spawned from sounds a hell of a lot like where I'm from. Re-calibrated me properly.

    Here's my list:

    1. Bon Iver - 22, A Million.
    2. Conor Oberst - Ruminations

I don't think I've ever written my own top 10 list before.

    1. Otis Redding - Live at the Whisky A Go Go: the Complete Recordings. Full recordings of 7 sets recorded over 3 days. Amazing music.
    2. Rolling Stones - Blue & Lonesome
    3. Drive By Truckers - American Band
    4. Lucinda Williams - Ghosts of Highway 20
    5. David Bowie - Blackstar
    6. Sarah Jarosz - Undercurrent
    7. Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Denial
    8. J Cole - False Prophets
    9. Angel Olsen - My Woman
    10. Margo Price - Midwest Farmer's Daughter

We should do a top tracks or playlist of the year. One or two songs off the best albums to get started. The "hook" songs if you will...

    1. pinegrove - cardinal
    2. hamilton leithauser + rostam - i had a dream that you were mine
    3. anderson.paak - malibu
    4. the avalanches - wildflower
    5. michael kiwanuka - love and hate
    6. chance the rapper - coloring book
    7. local natives - sunlit youth
    8. the 1975 - i like it when you sleep for you are so beautiful yet so unaware
    9. a tribe called quest - we got it from here, thank you for your service
    10. radiohead - a moon shaped pool

    random comments:

    - i didn't get into the pinegrove record until probably september, but there was nothing i remotely loved as much by the end of the year
    - anderson.paak is $#@!ing awesome, and that album keeps getting better
    - i want to hate the 1975, and they seem like terrible, pretentious $#@!s, but dammit if they can't write some $#@!ing great pop
    - i want to love the bon iver record, and occasionally i'm in the right mood, but most of the time i just want him to dial back the production
    - i think people are going to be writing about that hamilton + rostam record for 20 years

So I've only gotten five formal responses on the Google form. Not sure it's worth tallying the results w/ only that many responses, so if you want to chime in, you can do so here and I'll add 'em up, assuming we get more feedback:

I didn't find a lot that I liked last year.

My list goes something like this:

    Whitney, Light on the Lake
Head and the Heart, Signs of Light
    Dr. Dog, Abandoned Mansions
    Kishi Bashi, Sonderlust
Hamilton Leithauser & Rostan, I Had a Dream that You Were Mine
    DIIV, Is the Is Are
Peter Bjorn and John, Breakin' Point
Band of Horses, Why are You OK

I really could have stopped at 3 with stuff that I really liked.

I did not like Car Seat Headrest at all. I tried to get into Parquet Courts the second time around and found it as difficult as the first album from a few years ago. And I thought new albums from some bands I generally like (Local Natives, DBT, J Cole, Kanye, Bon Iver, Avett Brothers) ranged from "meh" to garbage.

Thanks for putting this together, though... I see some stuff on the various lists I'd like to check out.

I didn't post this list on google docs because I'm a terrible human. Also only the Top 5 are really "listen all the way through" albums for me. The rest have some really strong $#@!ing songs but some of the rest of them left me blah. Also there's nothing new on this list that hasn't been stated elsewhere, for the most part. Congrats to CSH for winning the title </spoiler>

Really good album. You might like Hiss Golden Messenger "Heart like a Levee" and Lambchop "FLOTUS" from last year too.
