Interested in yíalls take on this article. My problem (like a lot of 14 handicappers like myself) is fighting an ingrained, bad, over the top move in my transition. I know what the problem is, but canít fix it to be consistent. I know that the real answer is time and repition, but Iím always looking for the right mental thoughts, as itís not second nature (yet).

Essentially, this article says that thinking about the right path of the clubhead (external cues - 8 to 2, hit it to right field, etc.) provides better results than thinking about feeling the right moves of your body (internal cues - drop the hands, back to the target as long as possible, etc).

I found the article pretty interesting. What says the Shag?

I have a nasty over the top move. Tried to fix it. I said $#@! it and worked on developing 150 and in shots that I know I can execute. Spent more time on putting. Went from a 16 to a 9.7 currently.

Still have a nasty over the top move.

Edit: the big shot saver for me was developing 50 to 100 shots with less than 10 yard gaps between each. Not saying you shouldn't fix your over the top move, but there are likely other areas to vastly improve in as well.

Could you make a hole-in-one if you took 500 shots from 145 yards?

Eduardo Molinari (European Tour player) tried it and here is how it went ..... do you think he makes one?

Got tipped off on this place - http://www.theoldamericangolfclub.com/ - by anth last week. In short - now my favorite public/semi-private course I've ever played. Simply amazing. Incredible routing, thoughtful design, penal green complexes, and interesting views. VERY small greens, and not just small but set at interesting angles. I never really appreciated angles because 99% of golf courses (esp american golf courses) the greens are HUGE, and so a "good angle into the pin" is really just a matter of degrees. But at this place, the right angle could literally give an approach shot 25-35% more green to play with. I missed at least three greens hold wedge or sand wedge when I hit a good shot, and the ball rolled off the edge because I was playing from a $#@!ty angle and had only a narrow sliver of green to work with.

Exceptional practice area, exceptional conditions, and at twilight only $100 makes this place a slam $#@!ing dunk. Go play it, you won't be disappointed. Oh, and buy the yardage book. It's chock full of advice from the designers (one is Justin Leonard, btw), and worth every penny.

I second this. I live in the area and can attest to this track. The course right across the street, The Tribute, is fantastic as well. It's similar to a Tour 18 concept, except it's constructed with 18 holes from the European courses used for The Open Championship. And because of the way the wind blows off the lake, the course always plays different. Both of these courses are great.

    My Golf Plight:

This year was hard on me. I went from a 14.1 to a 17.2 and am very frustrated with the game. I'm 32 years old and have been playing for about 24 years. Next year is opening up for me from a schedule standpoint and so I'm going to give it my best effort. Time to fish or cut bait so to speak. Here is my plan:

    1. I have stopped playing for the year and am taking lessons. I found a new pro (one that isn't at my club just putting band-aids on my swing to get me on the course) and I like him. I'm seeing him every 10 days to get my swing built up from zero (2 lessons and I'm taking 1/3 swings with an 8 iron).

    2. I am studying to purchase an in home flight tracker so I can practice over winter. Probably going to rig up a skytrak system.

    3. I am going to play 35 or more rounds next year. I am making a custom scorebook to track various stats (described later) so I can see where my game is failing me.

    Stats to track:

Each shot - what club I use and how far from the pin said shot leaves me. Also, where it leaves me grading the landing area as follows; A. Fairway/green, B. lite rough, C. bunker/rough, D. OB/unplayable
    FIR
    GIR
    Shots to get on green from; <100, <75, <50, <25, <15 (yards)
How close my approach or pitch/chip lands from the pin in feet
how many putts and the distance from hole after my first putt.

I am going to find out what is wrong with my game through statistics and extreme focus. This is all very $#@!bersome and truthfully I do know where many deficiencies are but I think tracking these stats as my round unfolds will help me focus on each shot at the very minimum. At the most it will tell me where I need more practice and hopefully help me bring my score down.

What are everyone's thoughts? Any omissions in the tracking I should add?

I doubt youíll have a large enough sample size to make your stats actionable. It also doesnít provide you insight into what the conditions were when you hit the shot (lie, weather, your conditioning that day, etc.)

In my opinion, if you want to develop actionable stats, youíll need to do it on the range where the variables are controlled and you have hundreds of identical shots to measure/compare.

That's a big jump. At my course I think that means I've added about 8 strokes to my game in various places. I know short game is a big spot but I'm also not hitting any greens. My ball striking has been bad for about 6 years and I've always been more eager to get on the course than correct the problem before hitting the course.

I've got a lot of band-aids and I can't get back to a basic swing because of bad habits over the last 18 months. I've just lost sight of it all. I had a very weak grip, club face open at address, I am not straightening my front leg or clearing my hips through my swing so I am forced to tuck my ass under my shoulders to physically hit the ball. This causes me to be "all arms" and because of the open face i have about 7 clubs in my bag that have a distance between 145 and 165 yards to them. It's just discouraging. All of these problems are identifiable but I can't fix them in a vacuum so I'm seeking help. We're rebuilding it with good habits so I can practice a right swing and hopefully take the right swing to the course.

I agree. I really love golf. A lot. That's why I feel 2018 will be a make or break season for me. I'm going to invest in a indoor range I love it so much. I'm willing to throw money at the problem. I'm going to add things like wind direction into the book as that is a decent factor at the club I'm at.

I would discourage you from trying to track your stats in so much detail while you're working on a major swing fix. You are going to have so much $#@! jumbled in your head you will have a very hard time focusing on the task at hand, plus you probably won't enjoy playing very much.

Stat collection is much more helpful in identifying a problem or area for improvement when you don't know where to start. It sounds like you already know your issues so bogging things down with that kind of data would be counterproductive IMO.

    Good luck!

I dropped from a 12.6 to a 9.4 over the last 4 months, most of which I would attribute to finally setting aside my blades and getting a set of M1s. That and I've been playing a lot more golf.

As far as tracking, I don't know how you plan to do that, but I recently picked up the Arccos 360 system and through 4 rounds I am really enjoying it so far. I don't have nearly enough data in it yet to make any meaningful adjustments, but I really see the potential with this.

Having said that, I agree with DDD Dad that you may be filling your head with too much on the stat tracking right now. For me, I'm pleased with my overall swing and ball-striking right now (knock on wood) and am hoping to find small ways to cut down from 83-87 to shooting 80 with some regularity. One thing that I do really like about the Arccos system is that I don't have to mess with it during my round. I just select the course that I'm playing before I tee off and it does the rest. I do have to keep my phone in my front pocket, but thankfully that hasn't been a bother. I think having a tracking system that you don't have to spend your entire round focusing on is important.

I'll send some screenshots later of some of the data I've collected over my first 4 rounds in case this might be something you're interested in purchasing.

I figured you guys would appreciate this. Stayed in town Saturday to watch our beloved Horns lose a heartbreaker to OU. The wife and kid had already left to start our Disney vacation, so I was flying into Orlando alone. So there I stand, angry because my wife misread my text about what time my flight was coming in. When who is standing right next to me looking angry that their ride wasn't there as well? None other than one Annika Sorenstam. We exchanged pleasantries for a bit, and I quickly complimented her on her game. Her husband(still hard to believe she isn't gay) came and picked her up, and I quickly snapped a couple creeper pics for the Shag.
