Spending these next few days building a custom topwater rod from scratch. Going to be my new car rod for those times when I can sneak out of work. Surprising how easy the process is and how much value you get when you roll your own. Doing a short Mag Medium on the faster side that can be used for tops, jerks, and even light worms or finesse presentations.

Good luck, fishing will be few and far between for me this year.

Probably my favorite fishing weekend ever was in Islamorada. Amongst everything else we caught, I landed a gigantic Sawfish. Had it on video. Was like reeling in an ice machine.

I'm going to repower my skiff this winter. Waiting on the tax man to tell me if it's going to be a simple repower or a full refit. (repower, fair the hull and redo the gel coat, trolling motor, and maybe some electronics). I saw a guy selling what is totally my dream skiff yesterday, so I'm slightly toying with the idea of selling mine and buying that one. I'd have to finance part of it, but man it's sweet.

I'm also talking with my buddy I recently fished with in Louisiana about going back in February. That is really prime time for the winter bull redfish action. At least for those of us that like to sight fish them with fly rods.

We are planning a trip to the Venice area for sometime in 2017. Prefer targeting bull reds in skinny water. I was told fall would be good but February is really when the action is?

I feel your pain. There's a SeaArk ProCat that's been trying to get my attention. I'm not listening, but I still hear it now and again. Makes it easier to turn a deaf ear since a good friend lets me use his big Lowe whenever, and my normal fishing buddy has a G3 (with cover and heater) and a pontoon.

Doesn't cure the "want. mine." issue, but it keeps me in check for now. Well, that and the $#@!ing HOA would't let me park it at the house.

Different game. Fall is great because the shrimp are flushing out of the marsh and the red fishing in general goes off. You'll catch lots of upper slot and slightly oversized fish. For us fluff-chukers looking to sight cast big boys, the really cold water clears up a lot and makes sight-casting easier. Downside is we may only get 4-5 shots a day.

Ok, got it. Thanks. Yes, for this group, fall would be best, then. That said, I'd love the February trip. I prefer sight fishing (it's really more like hunting than fishing) but I'm still working on my fly game.

Was planning a fishing trip to Seadrift this last weekend but we pulled the plug due to the weather and wind. Be careful out there:

    http://fox6now.com/2017/01/09/3-texa...ng-found-dead/

The bodies of three men who disappeared during a duck hunting trip on Texas’ Gulf Coast have been found, authorities said Sunday.

Authorities identified the hunters as Starett Burke of Wallisville, Texas; Spencer Hall of Mont Belvieu, Texas; and Chris Ruckman from Dayton, Texas. Their bodies were recovered Saturday in a bay near Corpus Christi, the US Coast Guard said.

The three men had reportedly launched their 17-foot, flat-bottomed boat in a bay between Port Lavaca and Palacios before sunrise Friday morning, the Coast Guard said. Ruckman’s girlfriend called the Coast Guard when the men failed to return as expected.

The men’s boat was also recovered.

The incident is under investigation, but officials do not expect foul play, according to CNN affiliate KPRC. The Coast Guard confirmed there was a small craft advisory on the water all day Friday and conditions were choppy.

The Coast Guard, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office launched a land and water search early Saturday morning with the help of a plane and helicopter.

It was not immediately clear what led to the men’s deaths.

Yeah, I try to duck hunt that area twice per year, and one of my buddies from those trips told me about that last Saturday via this link, which has a few more details: http://www.houstonchronicle.com/news...g-10842772.php.

Three adults, two dogs, and gear in a 17 foot john boat in dark-before-dawn, 35 mph winds, brutal cold, and 3 foot seas is not a scenario to be taken lightly. Sad tragedy.

I can make some suggestions. When you are fishing crystal clear water, try to throw something that is a more natural color. In the SG, I'd suggest whites, craw colors, greens, browns, and blacks. That stretch of water is known for the white bass runs near Granger Lake where you can catch all day on small jig curly tail grubs on a RoadRunner underspin. (see below)

If you're fishing a river, I always suggest throwing a small topwater popper if you can. Pitch it up to the bank under cover walk it or pop it. If you're fishing Texas rigged worms, you need to try and be patient with them, and ensure you're getting them where the fish are. A lot of people work them too quickly and don't actually let them sink. If Texas rigged isn't work, try a wacky rigged senko (see below)

I love small rattletraps for rivers. They call in fish from everywhere. Suggest using white, shad, or bluegill colors.

Small spinnerbaits like the Pond Magics are great as well cause you can cover lots of water and they are relatively weedless. Same goes for chatterbaits in bluegill or white/chartreuse.

Whenever I'm struggling to get a bite on a river, I immediately downsize my tackle. If I'm throwing a bigger weighted texas rigged worm, I'll throw a texas rigged or wacky rigged senko without a weight. If I'm throwing a 3/8-1/2oz spinner, I'll drop down to a 1/4oz. Bigger rattler, drop down to a 1/8 or 1/4oz, etc.

Well, let me be the first to tell you then. If there is every a situation where I'm struggling to get a bite- I immediately grab my Senko rod and start throwing it. If there are fish biting, you will catch at least one on a senko. I've had days where I went through a 10 pack of baits because I'd hook up every 2-3 casts.

Gary Yamamoto makes the original stick bait, that almost everyone copies now. He demands a premium on them, but I still pay it. Quite possibly the best soft plastic bait for enticing a bite that I've ever fished.

Spent the past two weeks in Turks & Caicos chasing bonefish on the endless flats with my brother and some guy with a bunch of fishing trophies named Rick Clunn. It's a lot of work, but damn, every time you've got a casting opportunity you forget about the miles of sloshing through the muddied bottoms.

nice. I've got an older Ross Gunnison on my 8wt Sage RPLXi. It's been bulletproof.

I bought myself a Temple Fork Mangrove 10wt and a Waterworks Lamson Guru for Christmas. I needed something bigger than an 8wt for Bull Redfish in the Louisiana marsh.

have a ross reel, lamson guru reel, and tfo 6wt. the action on my ross reel is amazing. was out floating with a buddy this past summer and we were tossing around his helios2 all day then switched to my tfo/ross set-up and he wouldn't shut up about how accurate and smooth it was. not gonna lie, felt pretty good knowing i paid 1/4th of what he did and had a rig that outperformed his. he was bummed.

My first fly reel was a Ross Cimmaron C3 on a Sage RPL 7 weight. Still have both. I've got several Gunnisons and I've got my favorite- the Ross San Miguel. I've never found a smoother drag than the San Miguel - landed some nice fish on light tippets with that one.

I've got one of the original TFO TiCr 6wts I bought when they first came on the scene in 2004 or so. They have always made a great casting rod, but the fit and finish has come a long way since 2004. My 6wt casts great, but it looks like a budget rod. The cork looks cheap, the reel seat is pretty meh, and the finish on the guides has yellowed and has some spider cracks. The new Mangrove I just bought casts great, and looks like a million bucks. They have really stepped up their game the past few years and kept a great price point. If you took the logos off the rod and set it next to a Sage or Scott, I'm not sure anyone but the most serious gear nerd could tell the difference.

Here she is with a little stock pond bass. Yes, that's an Abel Big Game #1 on my sub-$200 rod. I got a great deal on it on ebay from a guy that was retiring and closing his shop.

Just left the Houston Boat show. Sadly did not leave with a boat. Did grab a 7ft Castaway Taranis for the fiancé (I apparently got engaged at New Years Eve). Anyway, This is going to be her valentines present. There were some nice custom rods there.

Also got a couple of the Line Cutterz rings. Figured they might be nice little gifts.

Got to talk to Joe at Chicken Boy lures for a while. That man is entertaining.

If any of you fly fishers need an evening dose of wanderlust, give this a look. 20 minute short film on chasing big Roosterfish in Baja. Looks like tough, miserable fishing...I'd love to try it.

Haven't been around much but a quick update from Costa Rica. Fished 3 days out at the FADS 100 miles offshore last week. Raised 67 blue marlin got 47 bites and caught 31. Also caught 1 stripe. The sailfish haven't turned on yet inshore but that should happen any day now.

There have already been numerous reports of the white bass being fooled by this crazy weather and that the spawn has already begun in some places north of Austin. We're going to head to Lake Travis and hit the coves to see what we can get into this weekend - rain or shine.

Looking at booking a trip for my father in law and myself to Alaska to go fishing in June. He wants to fish for Halibut and Kings. Looked at a few options. We can do Sitka for about $3200/person, all inclusive, no airfare. I can go to Kenai and fish a lot cheaper. $1900, all inclusive except dinner, no airfare. Any other Shaggy recs? Leaning towards Kenai, fishing the river for salmon and the ocean for halibut. This is for a 7 night trip with 6 days of fishing.

I fished Sitka a couple of years ago in May during a cruise celebrating my in-laws' 40th wedding anniversary. Fished for kings, halibut, and yellow eye. It was a great experience in an unbelievably beautiful place, but the style of fishing wasn't my thing. We trolled open ocean for kings and then bottom fished for halibut and yellow eye using a rod attached to a rod holder. BORING. I would rather have fished a river for kings and used lighter tackle for the bottom dwellers. I'm no expert in Alaskan locales and their fishing techniques, but Kenai sounds more fun. My point is, consider the type/methods of fishing (and where) that your FIL likes and go from there.

I bet you will be happy with those waders. After going through roughly a half dozen varying brands over the years, I finally ponied up and bought a pair of Simms about 5 years ago. Should have done that from the get go. Will never go back.

Caught a big sand trout in the canal on New Years Day but I've been ate up with the hunting bug since the turn of the year. Will get back after the fish starting this weekend. Not a csb.

That reminds me of a story that I have to tell on myself. Ugh. Anyway, me and one of the nephews were jacking around on Galveston looking for a spot to just chuck some lures. We ended up at the San Luis Pass county park (where the KOA used to be). Some guy was out on a surf board when we got there but I didn't think anything about it. We pulled out a couple of my lightweight freshwater fishing poles and were just kinda milling around chucking lures and shooting the $#@!, not really paying attention.

Well, it turns out the guy had paddled out into the pass to drop a bait. He was back on shore off to one side of us, maybe 20-30 yards away. I'm chucking some rattletrap bait and pull it up and it's got some fishing line fouled in the hooks so I pull it loose and then begin to wind it up into a ball. Can you see where this is going?

Yeah, I had crossed his line somehow and ended up with a ball of line in my hands that was probably a hundred to two hundred feet long.

I hung my head and went over and confessed. For one brief shining moment I was that guy, the complete idiot on the beach, the prototypical tourist. Goddamn that sucked ass.

Anywho, that contraption above just had me thinking/wondering if there's any potential use for a drone when fishing. Might help spot schooling fish? I don't know...prolly already been done if there's any good use for one.
