48 team World Cup in 2026?

It's starting to become more of a reality than just a possibility. Haven't searched for an article in English but it sounds like FIFA officials have come to an agreement.

I don't like the idea personally, that's 16 extra crappy teams.

seems logical that they would give it to the americans and everyone stuffs billion dollar bills into their luggage on the way out the door if thats the case. i'm fine with it. more soccer is awesome.

FIFA's proposal (16 groups of 3) would create some (many?) completely unwatchable groups (Brazil, Congo and Canada!!!!!). I prefer the original FIFA proposal (16 automatic group stage qualifiers and 32 teams playing single elimination games to qualify for the knockout round). That would have been insane.

Knockout stage should remain relatively unscathed though, unlike in UEFA's awful expansion of the EUROs.

Maybe Qatar would've made it after all! (not really)

Are they really going to resolve every draw in the group stage with a penalty shootout?

That would be incredible, and really the only way I could ever get behind a 48-team World Cup. Plus, it would make qualification a whole lot more interesting.

    Or what happens when-

    Team A beats team B 1-0
    Team C beats team A 1-0
    Team B beats team C 1-0

There will be one more USA-Mexico WCQ in the US that isn't a glorified friendly.

So I guess that any team with 1 very good player or at least 4 good players will make the tournament.

Sounds kind of like they have decided to $#@! up the entire tournament in order to win votes from countries with 100 able bodied men able to try out for a team.

PUERTO RICO will make The Cup in 2026...

...even if San Juan doesn't get to host a match.

I've been thinking about it and it's actually not THAT bad. It will make games more interesting and relevant.

Group of three, two qualify. Problem is that if you play 1st and 3rd then you have a huge advantage. Playing 1st and 2nd game, you have odds against you. All this based on fatigue of course.

Every third game for a team is now relevant when before, sometimes it wasn't and coaches used it to rest players.

No. It sucks horribly. The Hex, which has always been entertaining and important for both U.S. and Mexico team building, is dead and been replaced with some glorified friendlies.

Competitive fixtures now consist of the WC every four years and the freaking Gold Cup.

The only silver lining is that the US and Mexico will need to commit to play in the Copa to get some competitive international experience. Unfortunately, I have little faith that the USSF will recognize the necessity of playing in the Copa.

I think that the right answer is that "It leaves VOTES on the table."

I would be that this doesn't do as well as having competitive qualifying matches for 2 to 3 years and then competitive World Cup matches.

Craptastic Matchups will get low ratings. This will not help bring in more ad revenue.

Not a fan of the idea, looking at the possibility of an extra 4 spots for the AFC (Asian Football Confederation), I prefer that the Socceroos need to actually play some decent teams on the way to the WC finals and get the results rather than playing minnows, if this goes ahead there will be a lot of dead rubbers in qualifying....

ZURICH (AP) — FIFA wants to hold a new six-team playoff round in the 2026 World Cup host country to complete the expanded 48-team tournament lineup.

The final two qualifying slots would be decided in the proposed mini-tournament played in the November before the World Cup as a test event, a move that puts the Confederations Cup's long-term future at risk.

The idea was announced Thursday as part of the FIFA Bureau's proposal to award each of the six continental confederations extra places at the World Cup, which will expand starting in 2026 when North America is the expected host.

UEFA is set to get the three extra guaranteed slots it wanted, bringing its total to 16 qualifying slots. The proposal also increases Africa to nine, Asia to eight, South America to six, North America to six and Oceania to one guaranteed slot.

Excluding Europe, the other five confederations would send one team for the playoffs. The World Cup host continent would provide the sixth playoff team.

Before coming into effect, the FIFA Council must approve the proposal on May 9 in Bahrain. The council, chaired by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, agreed in January to expand the World Cup from 32 teams starting with the 2026 edition.

FIFA also said its bureau — comprising Infantino and six confederations presidents — wants automatic entry for host nations to come from a confederation's quota.

With the United States, Mexico and Canada weighing a co-hosting bid for 2026, the decision on which hosts will get direct entry is set to be made by the council and not individual confederations, FIFA said.

The playoff proposal to qualify for the 2026 edition would replace a format for 2018 of two intercontinental, two-leg playoffs — South America vs. Oceania, and CONCACAF vs. Asia — plus a European round of two-leg playoffs that allocates the last four of UEFA's quota of 13 qualifying slots.

FIFA hopes to generate buzz among fans in the 2026 host country, or countries, but bringing in six teams to play three matches over several days that will decide the final two of 48 slots.

The suggested format would see the four lower-ranked teams paired for single knockout matches. The winners would advance in the bracket to face the two higher-ranked teams.

Using the current FIFA rankings, a theoretical playoff lineup in November 2025 in the United States would be: China, Curacao, Ecuador, Morocco, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Tahiti.

The Confederations Cup already faced an uncertain future after this year's edition in Russia.

With the 2022 World Cup in Qatar being played in November and December, a Club World Cup in November 2021 has become the preferred test event.

lulz the entire hex would get in. Any word on how CONCACAF would change qualifying for this? Our region is obviously so damn top heavy that it's a joke. I'd rather fight against CONMEBOL for the 12 total qualifying spots.

Seriously, now that I think about it. There are 51 total federations in CONCACAF+CONMEBOL. Use qualifying rounds to get it down from 51 to 36. Top 21 nations in the latest FIFA rankings move through automatically, the bottom 30 are drawn for the qualifying round. That can just be two-leg playoffs, or they can draw into five 6-nation groups where the top 3 in a double round robin advance. Do that the year after the World Cup.

Then you have 36 nations left. Draw them into six groups of six nations based on pots, of course. Top two finishers in each group qualify for the World Cup.

    Done.

    ^^^

doesn't change your idea much, but six of the CONCACAF nations are not FIFA members and wouldn't participate in WCQ.
