Pseudo and firefish will occupy pretty much the same position in the water column so he will probably be pushy.

You can probably trade some of those mexicans in once they decimate your algae...which is likely going to take about a week unless you're completely overgrown. Got hair algae or just green film? Dosing magnesium can really help control algae growth too.

I had mostly wrasses in my tank over the last year. They are gorgeous fish and really interact with each other. Was really partial to fairy wrasses.

Anybody in the Houston area have any recommendations for where to get african cichlids? I'm thinking of doing a 90-125 gallon tank when I move in a month and I think I will go the Malawi/Tanganyika route...

Some months back I promised a ground up build with diy lighting tank and sump. My plans have been put on hold, kind of. I am moving to Florida in September. I have been purchasing materials and supplies for some time now.

I have settled on a 48x20x20 acrylic aquarium and some Rubbermaid tubs for the sump. I have been buying my lighting already. As soon as I get in to Florida I will start this. I am going to put into a rectangular frame 150 watts of pc fluorescent flanked by one each of 250 watt 10k metal halides. I am not making my skimmer. I will purchase that.

The biggest change/ opportunity is the chance to use natural sea water and gulf coast white sand. Of which I will be doing both. So in mid September or October I will start the construction and photographing of my build.

I will also catalog where I am buying materials. I am trying to do this on the cheap. So far it is working. Using fcan ballasts and horizontal mogul bases I am $350 in and have everything I need to build the lighting rig except the oak 1x6. $350 for 650 watts of light....... Not too shabby.

Be cautious with the natural seawater. It can carry a lot of microbes. I'd skim the hell out of it for a few weeks before adding marine life.

    Look forward to your build.

I have a 150 gallon tall Oceanic aquarium that I think I am going to part ways with due to space issues since I am going to be working from home. Anyone interested? Need at least 4 people to move this thing.

when i upgrade, i'm going reef ready w/ internal overflows. i'd love to have a 150, but not if i'm hanging overflows off the back.

Puss. Do a coast-to-coast overflow on the back. Internal overflows eat up a lot of space and create dead spots in your circulation. Unless you run MP40/60s. No dead spots then. My 180 had corner overflows and I had to run 2xMP40 on the ends and 2xMP10s on the back wall to get enough water flow for the SPS.

But seriously, do a coast-to-coast. Super clean and you can buy kits for just about every size tank.

You would also need to consider lighting on that tall a tank. I'm guessing at least 28" of water column plus mounting height. For any light loving corals you'd be required to run 250w halides or $1000 worth of LED.

why not have bulkheads drilled then installed, I have seen them done effectively as overflows.

Place them where you want your water level, install the plumbing and let it dump into your refuge/sump.....

with the right wave maker this works like a champ.

So my African Cichlids had babies the other night. They are the plant eating kind, not the meat eaters. Any chance I can leave them in the main aquarium, or do I need to separate them for a while? I told my wife and kids they probably wouldn't make it, and they got all upset, so my wife wants to try to save them. Is this going to cost me $100 for a new small aquarium?

Separate, they will be eaten by rival cichlids, even if they are plant only.

Part of the fun of cichlids is having babies grow up in the main tank. Mbuna fry will be fine if you have a good rock scape. Enjoy watching them grow up.

yea, the two we've spotted are hanging out under a rock ledge where the big ones can't get to them. I'll dump food on the opposite end of the tank and all the adults rush over to eat it, then I drop a few pellets close to the ledge and the little ones dart out and grab them and haul ass back under the ledge.

Here are a couple of $#@!ty iPhone pics. The tank is 55 gallons. I tried to get a couple of the whole tank, but flash pics look $#@!ty.

The smaller of the two yellow labs is the female.

The ledge to the fishes right (our left) is where the little ones are hanging out

I'll get out the DSLR tomorrow at feeding time and see if I can get pictures of the little ones.

Yellow lab? You mean the red zebras? With all the plants in that tank your fry should have plenty of cover.

The color on that cobalt is fantastic. You running fluorescent on that tank? If you really want to see your colors pop you might consider adding a UV range LED strip.

Son of a bitch, you're right. I always thought they were labs, but a google image search says otherwise. The little ones are getting more brave every day.

That's exactly what happened. I shop at Aquatek, and they are usually pretty good.

And to your question about lighting, yes they are fluorescent. I've been thinking about a complete lighting redo and going with all LEDs. Maybe that will be my Christmas present to myself...

LEDs for a 55g wouldn't be that cheap. You get a couple supplemental strips for around $60

did the semi-annual/annual big breakdown this weekend. took all the rock out, broke down the sump parts, cleaned the hell out of everything and rounded up some guys to trade in. out: big blue tang (6") of some flavor, big diamond goby (5+"), big coral banded shrimp. in: tiny coral banded (w/ only 1 arm), tiny diamond goby, mandarin goby, 6 line wrasse, and a couple of inverts.

    the leftover locals:

    mandarin and 6 line

    incumbent cleaner shrimp

new 1 armed coral banded shrimp

    blue legged hermit

    emerald

old as hell brittle star and new tiger tail cuc

big ass cowry - twice as big as one i've had for a couple of years now.

I had a CB Shrimp in my 90G reef tank and he/she was a terror. I ditched it in favor of a few skunk shrimp, after few months the skunk shrimp (4) would lay pellet sized green eggs. None ever hatched as they ended up as free food for the other inhabitants but it was cool to see "life" happen. I tried my hand at a Mandrian Goby and never had any success and my tank was crawling w/pods after dark. I know they are not for saltwater newbs. They are so hard to get started on flake/pellet food from what I hear. Good luck JT, they are a beautiful fish though.

i've had mandarins before, so i'm not too worried, even though my last one didn't stick around long. one before that lived for a couple of years and was a fat little bastard, so i'm guessing my tanks is good there. i love the coral banded scrimps! this is probably my 5th one or so - get a tiny one, raise him up til he starts getting territorial and big enough to be an effective $#@! about it, then trade his ass in.

flake/pellet food? i've only ever fed frozen - bloodworms, mysis, brine, and spirulina brine.

He's talking about training your mandarin to eat prepared foods. Most folks don't have enough pod life to keep a mandy alive. You can always do a live pod dump every few months or so to help out. You keep the yellow coris? Those $#@!ers will clean your rock of pods too

never did anything before, but now that i'm reading up on it, i'll buy some pods the next time i'm at the lfs. can't hurt.

yes champ - the yellow choris stayed. he and the purple dottyback pulled an impressive disappearing act when i had all the rock out and was scooping out the fish for trade in. the purple dottyback was supposed to go too, but he hasn't been seen in 24hrs+. the yellow chromis didn't show back up until noon or so.

Good source of food for picky eaters is this:

Crab, shrimp, FRESH fish, unseasoned roasted nori, and spirulina all chopped up small and evenly mixed. Then put it in a freezer bag. Once it is frozen, use a cheese grater and grate some of it off into the tank. The same food works great for corals and anemones as well. Get a cup of water out of the tank grate the frozen chum into the water, and target feed with a turkey baster. Be sure not to over feed as this will certainly skip you nitrates and ammonia.

My big Cobalt Cichlid has a giant boil looking thing on his head. I've got him in a hospital tank and I did a full 4 dose regimen of triple sulfa, as recommended by the guys at aquatek, but it doesn't look like it's helping. I'm going to try to get a quick iphone pic to post so you guys can see what I'm talking about.

    Here we go

It doesn't seem to be affecting him other than looking awful. He still feeds aggressively, and he's moving the gravel all around the hospital tank.

That hospital tank used to be my kids goldfish tank, until they outgrew it. We took them up to the ranch and put them in a cement water trough that is well fed, and has a ton of algae in it. That's why it's got all the decor in it.

Alright kids, don't crucify me. I got a 20g tank for Xmas, first I've had in 20+ years. My question is what kind of fish from the PetSmart/Petco range should I get? Obviously this is baby steps compared to this thread, but I appreciate any advice.

Understood. It really just kind of depends on what kind of fish and colors that you like. For a 20 gallon you could do something like this:

    5-6 neon tetras
    2 peppered corydoras
    1 neon blue dwarf gourami
    2-3 mollies or swordtails

Honestly, I'd look at a website like http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/a...lies.cfm?c=830 and see what kind of fish look interesting to you. That website lists how easy it is to care for the fish, whether they're aggressive or not, etc. it's always good to know beforehand because some of the people that work in the pet stores don't always know.

Oh, and a good rule of thumb is 1" of fish per gallon of water.

Tetras and mollies breed like freaking rabbits. Atleast that's been my experience in the 40G tank I had a few yrs back.

Yeah, mollies and swordtails are livebearers and are really easy to have breed. With tetras you have to have a lot of cover/plants or the eggs and hatched babies get eaten quickly.

If you're looking for some aquarium porn check out Reefcentral.com I posted a lot there back in the day and still visit it from time to time. Great place for info, ideals and conversation with people who love reef'n.
