    Glad someone bumped this...

I upgraded my aquarium last month and managed not to kill anything in the transfer. In fact, it was a ridiculous success.

The problem is that I replaced a hanger filter with a pretty damn good canister filter, and... when do I have to clean this thing? The water still looks glorious after three weeks; I would normally be changing 30%+ of the water and vacuuming the gravel at this point.

The problem with aquarium porn is that it merely feeds the addiction. I'm moving in June and hope to get a freshwater aquarium going then. Once I move out of NY in a couple years and get into a permanent house, I'm thinking about trying saltwater.

  • #304
That doesn't look like anything an antibiotic can cure. Not sure why they recommended it. It looks parasitic to me. You might try something like Flagyl. I had good luck with it when some oscars had hole-in-the-head disease.

Been itching quietly for a few years to get an aquarium going again. Freshwater cichlids (don't want to mess with salt) and probably stick to more rarer african this time. Did both south american and african when I had my 55g up and running.

Started working on the wife a few months ago. I'm thinking about getting a 100 gallon for our office. Maybe I can convince her and get one set up by end of march. I miss it.

Not a better way to lower your blood pressure than to pull up a chair and stare at your aquarium.

Buying used is a great way to go if you're in a big city. Lots of peeps in DFW are tired of maintaining their 120g+ reef and want to unload it for 1/3rd of what they bought it for.

    dfwmas.org has a great buy/sale forum

I'm getting back in the market for a salt setup. I sold everything I had and got out of the hobby when I had kids. Now they are old enough to help out and have shown interest in it, so it's time to jump back in. I'm going to start out with a 75-90 I think and see where it goes.

I'd go 120. Same length but with the extra volume you give yourself more margin for error. Gonna do a reef or FOWLR?

Plan right now is FOWLR. We'll see where that goes. I want to make sure they are as interested as they say they are before going all out.

I've had a 60 gal Cichlid tank for 10 yrs. need to do a little maintenance before posting pics, but I've had a lot of fun with it. My 10 yo has a 16 gal community tank that is thriving. He's probably bred a couple dozen mollies by accident.

Been watching for a while. You have to sift through a lot of junk to find a nice system for a good price. I've got plenty of time though.

What kind of filter media is in the canister? DE? I would change that monthly. As someone else said I would still do a 25% water change once a month too, and I also did that by vacuuming the gravel.

Thanks Spy, my girlfriend and I just got into SW about a year ago. We freakin love it. Have had a couple of casualties but all in all not too bad. Bought a 65 gallon Red Sea Max off craigslist. Got the whole setup including rock, sand, CUC, and a few fish for $950. The move was a bit of a pita, but it was a hell of a deal. Same setup new would've cost 3 to 4X as much. Best part of this tank besides the fact that it looks outstanding, is no sump required. It's all built in to the system.

The mandarin is a petland addition about 6 months ago. Not sure how old he was to start with....pretty small. He has almost doubled in size and is doing fantastic. No he doesn't eat pellet. I have copapods and just add a new batch every 6 months or so. I feed 3 different things once a day, flake, frozen mysis shrimp(look like brine shrimp), and seaweed. It takes about 10 minutes total. Corals get a liquid food squirted in the tank once a week.

The flame is very peaceful in my tank....really everybody is. The Foxface is a little bit of a bully at feeding time, $#@! is a glutton.

was wondering about that flame as well. really want one in my tank.

my mandarin has really surprised me. i tried to kill him when i went out of town and left an idiot to take care of my house/tank. windows open, no heat on in the house over the last week of december - brilliant. when i got home, i thought he was dead, all gray like he was on black and white tv. went to scoop him out he scooted out, but i figured it was only a matter of time. he's come back like a champ, bright and plump. give him a squirt of copepods every day.

You must be running a big ass skimmer with all those proteins you're feeding. You might look at setting up a separate fuge and breeding pods in it.

    Your tank looks good BTW

Do you have any other Angels? If so, be wary of which ones mix well together. This is the second flame I have had.....I really wanted one. No other sw fish has the brilliant red/orange color of the flame. First one just didn't do well from the start then died. This one is from reefs2go.com and he has done very well.

Seems strange on the daily feeding of copepods. Are they live? What I bought is just a liquid with them in it and only needs to be put in tank every 4-6 months, once you have an active population of them in your tank. Again, I'm not an expert

I've got a large clean up crew. Probably 20 plus little hermit crabs, lots of snails, plus a strawberry crab(never see him) and 3 pom pom crabs, which we also never see. Sucks because we got those due to the fact that they are cool as $#@! but some things just disappear behind all the rock. I've got a big brittle star I have only seen once

Skimmer is a Tunze Nano. Works for tanks between 50 and 130 gal. The original skimmer was crap, which is really my only complaint about the Red Sea Max system.....everything else about it is A+

no other angels right now. have been thinking about a lemon peel or a flame, but just super worried about the flame being an $#@! and ruining my happy little tank.

had never fed pods before, and my mandarins lived long w/ fat bellies - my tank is probably 13 years old now. but the lfs told me a squirt a day, so that's what i've been doing.

this is what i'm feeding. same stuff?

JT, that looks like the exact same stuff, but I was instructed to dump the whole bottle in the tank at once and do that every 4-6 months or so. Guess either method works. Do you have a mandarin pair or just one? A male and female do some kind of mating dance that is supposed to be cool as $#@!. Can't put 2 males together in one tank, as is the case with alot of sf fish.

Arctipods is good stuff but really high in proteins. The pod packs are pretty good too. You can order live pods by the hundreds and use those to replenish your colonies. The problem is that your CUC, stars and rock dwellers will eat them. And mandarins are notorious gluttons. Thats why the recommendation of a separate fuge. Put some chaeto and a sand bed in it and grow you some pods.

Also, that Tunze nano is a good skimmer. But its really rated more towards the 50g side of that range, and event that with a moderate bioload. Your bioload is more on the heavy side IMO? What is your water change schedule like?

    just one.

current livestock: mandarin goby, diamond goby, 6 line wrasse, yellow wrasse, some kind of clown i've had for like 5 years + now, cleaner shrimp, coral banded shrimp, brittle serpent star

had a big, badass, fighting conch that died in the christmas freeze of 2013, and there may or may not be a cuc of some kind - haven't seen him since i put him in, but haven't seen signs of his passing either.

this is what i'm feeding. same stuff?
When I bought my tank, they had a flame in with a general population of fish similar to what I currently have with no problems....ie foxface, blue tang, yellow tang, sailfin tang, clowns, blenny, ect. They also had a Coral Beauty Angel in with the flame and they did well. The flame was one of the few casualties I had with the move. Even being as careful as possible, I guess moving the whole set up is stressful on the fish. My flame now has done well and is not aggressive towards any other fish at all. The only problem I have had is my recent addition of the Copperband Butterfly. I really like this fish but he will kill scallops. I had two of the flame scallops but he killed them. Also pretty sure he killed my featherduster....though sometimes those just die for various other reasons.

I got a guy that comes twice a month for $90/mth and he does a water change every time. He also checks my parameters and just makes sure all is well....also includes food so it seems like a good deal to me. This guy is a total saltwater fish nerd and seems to $#@!ing know everything. He runs a nice shop here in Tyler. We got him referred to us and thought it was a good idea especially while we were still learning about all this $#@!. Doubt we really need him now, but it's not a big expense to me

The Nano is a 9002 model and says it works up to a 130, seems to work great on my 65.

was looking for my vid about the cool electric flame scallop i had for a while, and oddly enough, it's in a post about my last mandarin dying....

his replacement is a fun little guy...who has electric lips. the guy at aquadome said he'd never seen a flame scallop like this one. this guy has electric pulses along his mouth! check it out:

$90/mth is worth every damned penny IYAM. I always did my own changes, supplements and dosing. Guarantee i spent more than $90 doing it. Of course, it was a big ass tank.

Man I got this guy from the get go on a recommendation. I was terrified I would $#@!ing kill everything on my own. As it turns out it's not that hard to maintain, but like the last poster said for $90 it's worth it.....especially since it includes the food. Dude is pretty cool for a fish nerd and a damn good source of info.

Those electric/flame scallops are cool as $#@!. I hated I lost mine with the addition of the Butterfly. I may try another one just to see if it might get along with him.....probably won't.
