Thread: Pink Floyd Thread

  1. #101
Not sure if this is the right thread for this, but here's Pearl Jam covering Pink Floyd's "Mother" on Jimmy Fallon a few weeks back:

Been enjoying the re-masters, especially the earlier stuff. I remember listening to Ummagumma in 7th grade or so, my mom had gotten the LP(s) from my aunt or somebody, man, I did not get it at all. Turned me off of it for a long time, just beause I got used to the later albums. Really enjoying hearing it now, this is such an under-rated song...

Another version, from the movie Zabriskie Point (the music starts about 2:10 into the clip)...

and finally a really trippy version of Interstallar Overdrive, it was supposed to go on the Ummagumma live LP but was pulled at the last minute...

Some snippets of this show have finally made their way to youtube. I love this $#@!, all those "Classic Albums" shows on VH1 Classic, there was a "Making of Sgt. Pepper" one that came out 15 or so years ago, I just eat that stuff up, all the in studio talk, breaking down the multi-tracks, etc. Even if you're not a huge Floyd fan, if you're a "studio rat" there's a ton of cool info in these on recording techniques, etc. I would kill to be able to sit in a studio with these tapes and play around with them...

I got Wish You Were Here on SACD a couple weeks ago. I can't stop listening to it. Love this album. It's not the stand out that DSOTM is but it's a perfect background record to throw on when you want to chill. The 5.1 mix is phenomenal. Next up is supposedly The Wall on SACD/DVD-Audio. Cue Bart Scott.

From the upcoming Immersion set - very interesting. Lyrics and vocal delivery much more in the style of Pros and Cons than the Wall...

Also, Have A Cigar is without a doubt the greatest piece of music ever written. Followed closely by Ode to Joy.

OK so who's got tickets to see Waters do The Wall this summer? Saw it once in Houston a year ago, and despite having watched the Berlin tape to pieces and scrounged up every crappy vintage recording of the original live show...I'm still pumped to see it again.

Roger's ego can suck a bag of $#@!s, the scale is a bit too large and there's no Dave on top of that Wall, but I felt it was an incredible effort to fully encompass the album.

It took me a long time to fully warm up to it, but after I did always felt the live version tells the story more truly than the movie did. Knowing that the entire band and light show is still going behind the Wall is such a powerful allusion to the core concept of the album that it gives me shivers.

And for the Dave perspective I've always wanted to meet the chief creative mind behind the Pulse tour stage / lighting / animation...many of the concepts had been hammered down before (plane crashing on stage, the pig, circular screen, etc) but it was all so fluidly done and updated...

As someone who's watched the tape, then VCD and DVD endless times you start to feel emotional attachments to the different configuration of the stage (screen lowered, lights in front of the band, the disco ball opening, etc.) "Sorrow" is the about the most badass use of lasers I have ever seen too.

I'd trade two Wall shows to have seen Pulse, but alas I was a teenager living on an USAFE base in Turkey at the time.

I'm also extremely excited about seeing The Wall for a second time. The 3D projections are pretty amazing.

I never got to see Pink Floyd, with or without Waters, but I saw Gilmour on his solo tour with Richard Wright back in 2006...so that will have to suffice. It was a great concert.

As a relative newcomer to the Shag, I absolutely love this thread. I'd give my left nut to sit down with some of you guys who had a chance to see Floyd, The Who, and Zeppelin during the 1970s. I'm 46 - that means that my concert experiences were limited to seeing The Who and Floyd-related projects during the 1980s and 1990s, including Roger Waters' Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking tour.

What also blew me away was the evolution in the lyrics of Dogs, perhaps one of my favorite tracks from Animals. Again, I really appreciate you guys linking some deep cuts from Floyd that date back some 40 years, especially on pages one and two of this thread.

And, for what it's worth , here are my top four Floyd albums:

    1. Animals
    2. Dark Side of the Moon
    3. Wish You Were Here
    4. Meddle (edited to add my fourth favorite)

My apologies if this has already been posted. I couldn't help but share this unusual and early version of Dogs/You've Got to Be Crazy from a 1974 show at Wembley. It's "busier", but just as haunting as the version ultimately recorded as Dogs on the "Animals" album.

    Enjoy.

I think I actually prefer this version to Dogs. I've listened to it a couple times now. Incredible. Now I'm looking to hunt down as much of the Wembley BBC pre-FM audio as I can. Off to be a leach.

Nice bump. This thread inspired me to do my (somewhat) annual Floyd revisitation. Listened to Meddle and DSOM in the last 24 hours. Simply amazing stuff. Just finished DSOM and a bottle of wine. If that isn't at least tied for greatest album of all time, then I don't think such a thing exists.

On that note, if you have Netflix streaming, go watch the Classic Albums documentary about the making of DSOM. The insight each band member gives in the interviews opens the experience up to a new level of understanding. What those four dudes did that year was monumentally important.

I feel like this post might be venturing into Lonestarman territory. But seriously. Love y'all $#@!s. Or whatever.

It's funny how two of my favorite songs in that era both needed female vocals to make them truly great. I can't imagine how Great Gig in the Sky and Gimme Shelter would be without the two female vocalists belt out just some great vocals that took those songs to another level.

Sigh. This thread inspired me to do my once per decade attempt to listen to some floyd on the headphones when no one is around and I have enough alcohol in my system to be accepting but not inattentive.

Then I want to listen to all of those high.

If only there were a secret board where I could upload my many Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and SRV bootlegs.

    Maybe one day...

I too wish there was a board like that - that I once belonged to only to have it cruelly stripped away at a moderator's whim . . .

Another great song off the Division Bell album.

Learned to play this on guitar a few years ago. Love David Gilmour's style. Slow enough that I can play it, but can never quite get to his phrasing.

    Beautiful tune.

I really just wanted to post here to get this thing back on page 1.

Please, if there is any kind of god out there let Mr. Gilmour make another run & surface somewhere w/in spitting distance of Austin.

    Would. Give. Anything.

Love the change Bowie brings to it and, as usual, Gilmour's guitar work is something else nobody could duplicate or improve on.
i was going to post this, that performance would be my ultimate guitar solo, how you can generate that much emotion from an instrument is amazing...he owns this room in that performance

Wolfgang's Vault is streaming Pink Floyd @ the Fillmore West, 4/29/70. It's an Ummagumma era set... lots of Barrett inspired music. Sound quality is excellent soundboard. You can sign up for a free 7 day trial, no credit card required.

No $#@!. Jam Bands have $#@!ing insane setups these days. Every time I see a jam band at house of blues I'm blown away. I always be sure to walk back to the boards and check out the lighting/sound guys' monitors for a few minutes.

Another Floyd fan here...love that I stumbled across this thread. Floyd is truly unique. THere hasn't been a band since or ever will be again that will be able to produce the kind of music they did. It $#@!ing gets into you and finds your inner most feelings and emotions. Even if you got them locked away or have walls up there's no escaping it. Even the most cold hearted emotionless person couldn't listen to DSOTM and not be affected and moved in some way.

Other bands from that generation that I love (Beatles, Zeppelin, Stones) all produced stellar music like Pink Floyd but it was just music. Floyd is like $#@!ing therapy of the mind and soul

i thought about starting a new thread, but the only title i could come up with was "the greatest pink floyd tribute band that you'll probably never get to see".

    el monstero

reason being these guys are all local st. louis musicians in various other bands that get together a couple of times a year to put on this show. they do a weeklong run at xmas at the pageant in the delmar loop. 2 years ago was the first outdoor summer show. last year was the first one at verizon in july, and this year's was last saturday. they did house of blues in chicago last year & kcmo in february.

this year's set list at verizon:

last year's stage show was better, but the music was just as good this year. last year included an echoes/set the controls/echoes medley which was badass. highlight of this year's show was during wish you were here. they had asked fans to send pics of departed loved ones, which were shown on the video monitors during the song.

video from last year's show. the only other ones i could find are crappy phone vids on youtube.

strippers in front of our box saturday night.

$#@!load of better pictures, especially of the strippers, on their facebook page.

props for the pg 1 cymbaline mention. Also always loved the "drift away" blues jam from some random bootleg (montreal 77?). Also have a passion for TFC - the southampton docks / final cut lyrics are my fav 7 mins of waters.

Yep, the infamous July 6, 1977 gig...

Blues: (Final encore) Even though the stage was being ripped apart and it was clear the show was over, very few people budged. With the house lights on creating false daylight, four of the players reluctantly came back one last time to play some improvised blues. David had already called it a night. Apparently he watched this song from the soundboard. I wish I'd known that at the time. By this point, the soundboard was just a few yards to my right. As Roger, Nick, Rick and Snowy played some generic blues, the stage continued to melt. Roadies, techies, and riggers worked like termites pulling cables and hauling equipment away. And to be fair, considering their gear was being torn down all around them, the four players sounded pretty good.

But, enough was enough. The tour was over and everyone (including the crew) was about to go their separate ways. Snowy was the first to be unplugged. He waved as he left. Next, Rick was silenced and gone. One by one, they removed the mics surrounding Nick's drum kit. By the end of the song, only Roger and Nick remained. Nick's last functioning microphone was for his snare drum and high-hat. Roger's flat "Good-bye!" signaled the end of this unsettling concert.

discovered last night that the Sirius/xm "deep cuts" channel is Pink Floyd radio on sunday nights. made the drive back from dallas a little more tolerable.
