This is an incredibly sophisticated analysis of the books to help kill many hours and tide you over for tWoW. Might even inspire a re-read: Huis Clos

I finally read through all of that. He has some interesting ideas, but he also reaches on an awful lot of things and gets fixated on stuff that there's not much support for. Like his theory that the real Quentyn Martell is living in Norvos with his mother and that an imposter was sent to the Yronwoods to foster. I do like the idea that Mance sent the letter to Jon instead of Ramsay though.

If there is anything right with this world, we'll get Valyrian Doom Part Deux and it wipes Mereen off the damn map.

And the nerd in me is all excited that I found this thread.

Also not convinced that GRRM ever finishes the books. I did catch a copy of the Dangerous Women compilation with GRRM's contribution "The Princess and the Queen or the Blacks and the Greens". Interesting backstory on the original "Dance with Dragons" that occurred 200 years before the current events of ASOIAF. Part of the way through and it has had a couple little interesting tidbits that tie into the current books.

If you have some time to kill waiting for the next book (I mean it'll probably only be another 5 years at this rate) you should check out The Great Northern Conspiracy. And I highly recommend reading the Dunk and Egg novellas if you haven't read those either.

I think he is finishing the series and won't release WoW until the last book is done. That way he can release WoW and follow it up one year later with the release of Spring.

I really hope this is his plan, particularly if he's going to make us wait "years" for WoW.

    I don't think so, but I also don't think it's years away.

The talk on westeros.org is that he's got about 1000 manuscript pages done and needs about 500 more for it to be about the length of the last one, and I think I've read that he says he's able, on a good day, to write about 10 pages (this is manuscript pages, not book pages--set in type face and edited, it should be more like 900-1000 pages).

He also said he held out of Storms about 400 pages (I presume manuscript pages). So, despite his myriad other interests, 600 additional pages in the past couple of years isn't out of the range of possibility, particularly considering that he's probably really only been working on it since the beginning of 2013.

I think GRRM knows how he wants to end the series but he has no idea how to get there - just look at books 4 & 5. Book 4 pisses me off just thinking about the time I wasted on it...

I also think he might be burned out on writing the series - each book has taken longer to complete than the previous. Combined with the fact that he has been working on the series over 20 years (first book was published in '96) and I get the impression his heart isn't in it anymore. Read his blog - he only cares about the NFL and his new movie theater.

In short - he isn't a spring chicken and I think we will be lucky if he finishes the series. On the flip side, if he croaks, HBO & company know how he wants it to end and they can get someone else to finish it (Sanderson, Rothfuss, Abercrombie, etc).

Fat $#@! has no idea how to wrap up the story lines, he isn't interested in working on it (Hey, another comic con appearance!!), he loves the HBO TV series and I think changing his stories to better fit TV, and I read a rumor he has it in his will no one can finish the series if something happens to him.

i hope he dies in some awful, disfiguring accident and while he slowly dies in a hospital, he'll have full consciousness and watch the Jets go 0-16 and all his pets die.

That fact that I KNOW he's a Jets fan means I spend way too much time on the interwebs.

completely agree with everything you said. i read he had initially planned to skip forward in time after book 3, to when the dragons would be fully grown. (and things would be more interesting) sadly, he wrote book 4/5 instead. all the time and energy he spent writing 2000 pages of filler, leading up to the fully grown dragons might have killed his interest in his own story.

for those wanting someone else to take over, you might take some solace in knowing that obese men live 6-7 years less than the average person. so if the tv series doesn't renew his interest...you might not have to wait all that long for a replacement writer. GRRM is 65 years old.

He wanted to skip forward but it wound up not making sense in the narrative

it doesn't make any sense for any reason except that he wrote the characters too young. of course, too young only means from a modern perspective. edward the third was leading a coup to take authority from his mother and her consort at age 17. maybe rickon is somehow key to everything and he would be too young, but the rest?

Originally he wanted to skip ahead because of Arya and her training and Dany learning to rule, but then it didn't make sense for Tyrion and Jon. And then he clearly wanted to flesh out Jaime

well, he failed. that last book didn't move the story hardly at all.

my son told me last night he saw an interview snippet on line where GRRM admitted that he won't have the books done when the tv series catches up.

This. He wrote the manuscript with the jump forward, but he and his editor(s) thought he spent too much time with characters in their own thoughts recalling what happened in that 3 year gap. I think it was a smart decision. An extra 1000 pages of slow filler is better than 500 pages in the present with 2000 pages of characters mental soliloquies remembering the past or randomly bringing up things that happened 2.5 years ago in conversation to hash out the plot development.

A lot is happening to different characters at differnt paces Lannisters/King's Landing vs at the Wall vs Arya, etc. If Tyrion randomly shows up half way across the world. The reader might as well see that as it happens instead of seeing it in the same number of pages in a long ass flash back.

Has he redeemed Jamie yet? The more I think about Jamie, the less Jamie has really done anything to show he's not just a prick that managed to do one good deed in his life. Saved King's Landing and didn't tell anybody why he did it and when Ned found him he was sitting in the Iron Throne with a dead king in front of him. Not really a way to get a warm reception from someone. So he hates Ned, and some can argue that he has just reasons, but after he tries to kill Bran, he continues being a $#@! to the man who now, unknowingly, has an airtight reason to want to kill Jamie. Yes, Jamie did it in part to protect his kids, but also because he wanted to continue $#@!ing his sister. So when Cat captures Tyrion, rather than show any type of responsibility or regret, that his brother his paying the price for his deed, he proceeds to find Ned and his men and try to kill them. He never shows any true remorse and ultimately opts out of his vow to Cat when he "entrusts his honor" with Brienne to protect her children (or something like like), because you know, that sounds really hard.

    itismedan,

I assume you haven't read the books and your post is purely about the tv series?

He's come to realize Cersei is a psycho $#@! and he's taking his Lord Commander job seriously? That's pretty serious change from the Jamie of the first book.

The way I've read his story arc, he's gone from being a colossal prick to being a slightly less colossal prick. He's not taking his Lord Commander job too seriously, and by that I mean not at all. He's just guarding his son (who isn't king) and everybody wants to give him a medal for it.

His arc with Brienne is pretty important - go back and jump into a bear pit to save her? That's not the same Jaime. Also letting Tyrion go after being effectively cuckolded and mocked? Nope, that guy has changed massively. Hasn't shown up yet in KL too much, but I suspect that will change.

kevwun right, he's more concerned with honor and is finally taking his job seriously; he doesn't really have a redemption arc though

He thinks he has to tell Mycella too about the truth (as well as Tommen), no clue whether he actually was going to go through with it, but it was a serious thought

Telling Tywin and then Cersei to $#@! off when they wanted him to give up the white cloak was a big step too.
