Apologies for being late to the party. Just saw it on reddit.
I finally read through all of that. He has some interesting ideas, but he also reaches on an awful lot of things and gets fixated on stuff that there's not much support for. Like his theory that the real Quentyn Martell is living in Norvos with his mother and that an imposter was sent to the Yronwoods to foster. I do like the idea that Mance sent the letter to Jon instead of Ramsay though.
And the nerd in me is all excited that I found this thread.
Also not convinced that GRRM ever finishes the books. I did catch a copy of the Dangerous Women compilation with GRRM's contribution "The Princess and the Queen or the Blacks and the Greens". Interesting backstory on the original "Dance with Dragons" that occurred 200 years before the current events of ASOIAF. Part of the way through and it has had a couple little interesting tidbits that tie into the current books.
If you have some time to kill waiting for the next book (I mean it'll probably only be another 5 years at this rate) you should check out The Great Northern Conspiracy. And I highly recommend reading the Dunk and Egg novellas if you haven't read those either.
$#@!. I saw this thread bumped and thought there was some news on WoW.
Finish the damn books, George.
Hearing rumors of a December 2014 release date. Would be the greatest chrimbus ever.
So Christmas is the Big Day?
$#@! this guy takes soo long
I think he is finishing the series and won't release WoW until the last book is done. That way he can release WoW and follow it up one year later with the release of Spring.
The talk on westeros.org is that he's got about 1000 manuscript pages done and needs about 500 more for it to be about the length of the last one, and I think I've read that he says he's able, on a good day, to write about 10 pages (this is manuscript pages, not book pages--set in type face and edited, it should be more like 900-1000 pages).
He also said he held out of Storms about 400 pages (I presume manuscript pages). So, despite his myriad other interests, 600 additional pages in the past couple of years isn't out of the range of possibility, particularly considering that he's probably really only been working on it since the beginning of 2013.
I think GRRM knows how he wants to end the series but he has no idea how to get there - just look at books 4 & 5. Book 4 pisses me off just thinking about the time I wasted on it...
I also think he might be burned out on writing the series - each book has taken longer to complete than the previous. Combined with the fact that he has been working on the series over 20 years (first book was published in '96) and I get the impression his heart isn't in it anymore. Read his blog - he only cares about the NFL and his new movie theater.
In short - he isn't a spring chicken and I think we will be lucky if he finishes the series. On the flip side, if he croaks, HBO & company know how he wants it to end and they can get someone else to finish it (Sanderson, Rothfuss, Abercrombie, etc).
Fat $#@! has no idea how to wrap up the story lines, he isn't interested in working on it (Hey, another comic con appearance!!), he loves the HBO TV series and I think changing his stories to better fit TV, and I read a rumor he has it in his will no one can finish the series if something happens to him.
i hope he dies in some awful, disfiguring accident and while he slowly dies in a hospital, he'll have full consciousness and watch the Jets go 0-16 and all his pets die.
well $#@! I thought he was a Jets fan. really kinda ruins my rant
He is a fan of both.
for those wanting someone else to take over, you might take some solace in knowing that obese men live 6-7 years less than the average person. so if the tv series doesn't renew his interest...you might not have to wait all that long for a replacement writer. GRRM is 65 years old.

A lot is happening to different characters at differnt paces Lannisters/King's Landing vs at the Wall vs Arya, etc. If Tyrion randomly shows up half way across the world. The reader might as well see that as it happens instead of seeing it in the same number of pages in a long ass flash back.

I assume you haven't read the books and your post is purely about the tv series?
He's come to realize Cersei is a psycho $#@! and he's taking his Lord Commander job seriously? That's pretty serious change from the Jamie of the first book.
Telling Tywin and then Cersei to $#@! off when they wanted him to give up the white cloak was a big step too.
